  1. I do not think it is sikhi that is weak, it is the followers that lack faith and conviction.

  3. I usually find doing kirtan will cheer me up or doing simran..but there are times when that hasn't even worked and I have just gone into the back yard and done practiced gatka whilst doing simran or had an intensive workout at the gym.. just some suggestions
  4. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! The khalsa is known for being sabat soorat. Rehat dictates that we should not alter our bodies in any way. I.e. something as basic as not wearing makeup/jewellary to not removing hair as well as not getting a tattoo. After all, a tatoo WILL alter you body therefore you are not accepting what guru sahib gave you. Let me just also highlight to get a tatoo, they will shave you hair on that part of your body because a clean surface is required. Needless to say this is beadbi of your kesh. Bhul chuk maaf! Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!
  5. I personally go for the kamarkasa if you want to secure your kirpan. However, you can also adjust your gatra so that the kirpan will fit into the waistline of your sports pants and it should be secure. That is what I do. You should not let wearing a shaster deter you from physical activity..after all we are natural sipahi's therefore we should always have shaster and to be a good sipahi we need to be fit so we should work out regularly :umm:
  6. The favoritism of a male is not just a panjabi thing...even the west favored males because inheritance was perferred to go to a male heir as oppose to the family of someone else, i.e the female (since she would get married).
  7. I second that, Giani Gurdev Singh did awesome kirtan that night! He is just too
  8. There is a class in LA and hopefully one will start in SJ...
  9. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! Baba Ajit Singh Gatka Akahara. Classes every Tues from 7-9 @ Community Centre Merrick Road, Southall. The Southall train station is a 1 minute walk from the centre. Hope that helps waheguroo ji ka khalsa waheguroo ji ke fateh!
  10. hmm, I have to be honest and say that I have not experienced that much racism, even subtle. Teachers have their own agenda's as to why the do not want you to do a certain class. They usually encourage you to take another class that lacks numbers so they get financial resources. Regarding the promotion of South African's etc..Well the reason the NHS does that is because in most cirmcumstances it is cheaper to promote them. They can pay them less. It's really sad but that is the way it works. That is why there are lots of foreign nurses. The NHS can pay them less, therefore the NHS can save money.. But I do agree that there is some racism, but it is a lot better than it was. I have only seen in institutes such as the army etc.
  11. I just read your email p_singh and then I saw this posted on sikhsangat. I am glad that you and your bibi were not badly hurt. I am still shocked to learn about this since I saw you last weekend and then to hear you were in this unfortunate accident. At the same time guru sahib has demonstrated how our kakkaar's and those that follow guru sahib's path are protected...dhan waheguroo jeo!
  12. Not all girls that wear jeans wear sluttish/tightish jeans that expose parts of their body.. Anyway, if jeans are banned from being worn in the gurdwara then that is fine as long as it is applicable to males as well. I have seen some guys that come to the gurdwara with jeans that are tight as well as tight tops, so if there is such a ban it should be applicable across the board. Anyway, I am not sure banning jeans will be the perfect solution because some girls wear pants that are equally inappropraite. I firmly agree we should dress appropriately to the gurdwara and not in a way that will encourage males or females to lust after you, but like I said this doesn't just apply to females. bhul chuk maaf!
  13. Vadiyaan my little veer. Happy Bday! I hope guru sahib continues to keep you in chardikala Lots of Love from you sister who shall remain gupat on this forum

  15. waheguroo ji ka khalsa waheguroo ji ke fateh! below is a link to some shaster owned by one of my friends. I thought I would share this with the cyber sangat http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/khalsa1313/my_photos waheguroo ji ka khalsa waheguroo ji ke fateh!
  16. I also think she should get married and if she going to become amritdhaari then her partner should also do the same. I believe the next amritsanchaar is in the midlands or something at one of the upcoming smagams. AKJ.ORG/UK will have more info
  17. As i said in my earier post.. You have to remember that hinduism existed before sikhi so there are certain things that are associated with hindu's but they have a separate meaning in sikhi. Shiv ji existed before the guru's. Just because he has a chand symbol does not mean that the singh's useage of it relates to hinduism. We have our own SEPARATE meaning different to the one used by hindu's to signify why we wear a chand. I was told about the suraj vanse and the chand vanse theory by a nihang singh and it fits into the theory of tiyaar bar tiyaar..
  18. Firstly, congratulations! I wish you all the best in breaking the news to your mum. Do not worry, guru sahib is always with his sikhs so he will be supporting your every move. What should i cover my hair with? > Ideally you shoudl cover your head with a turban. however, if you are at a stage where you do not wear one then you can cover your head with a scarf. Make sure it does not slip of. What should I wear while in public? > In public you should always try to dress modestly avoiding extremely tight and fitted clothing that is revealing when confronting another sikh, how should I greet Him/her? > You should say: wahgeuroo ji ka khalsa waheguroo ji ke fateh! This greeting actually goes to guru sahib as it means the khalsa belongs to waheguroo and victory belongs to waheguroo. What are common events that occur in the sikh temple (forgot the proper name) > The common events that occur at the gurdwara are sangrand & gurpurab's are celebrated Should i wear the symbol of Sikhism? >Which sikh symbol do you refer to? If you are referring to a turban then yes. i have often seen younger sikh women with their hair uncovered, is that good? >Sikhs should alwas respect their hair and keep this tied up wearing a turban. Even females. One of the sikh symbols is a turban which is our crown. Is dancing good? in a book i read, it said is was good? >Sikhs do not dance What is an in depth meaning of Khalsa? >The khalsa is an amritdhaari singh/singhni that is following guru sahib's path. The Khalsa is pure and righteous, humble, strong, etc..the khalsa has many qualities and represent akaal purakh (god) Do all sikhs want a home country? >Yes Do sikh participate and intermingle with other cultures? >Sikhs associate with all, we do not look down on anyone, but we will not compromise our religious principles for the sake of another culture..e.g we will not drink just because every one else is doing so at a cultural event. We call this bad sangat and try to avoid it. Is iterracial marriage good? (i'm not east indian) >Race is not the issue..it's religion. In sikhi because marriage in sikhi is about 1 soul in 2 bodies going towards guru sahib and this would not be possible if that person was not in sikhi. One important question that has gotten to me, is: What should i do if i'm not welcomed when i attend the sikh temple? >You will be welcome, because it's guru sahib's house. I apologise that I was not able to answer all your questions in full because some of have really deep answers and I was just talking a break from my revision!
  19. Lol..trust the nangs to add some sexual meaning to the chand! This is what i was told was the meaning of the chand..I may be wrong but..this is what i was told: The chand comes from shiv ji and belongs to him but it is worn by the khalsa. You have to remember that hinduism existed before sikhi so there are certain things that are associated with hindu's but they have a separate meaning in sikhi. Back to the chand story.. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to akaal purakhs charan for 3 days all the devis and avtaar came before Guru Nanak Dev ji and pronounced Guru Nanak Dev Ji as the sachaa nirankaar. And all the all the devi/avtaar guns where thus given to the panth, hence 96 crori fauj. When guru gobind singh designed the khalsa fauj the fauji singhs took the chand from shiv ji in order to represent chandr vanse fauj and the sooraj was taken from krishan avtaar to represent the soraj vanse. In this way the khalsa is every ready to fight be it day or night - chandr and soraj vanse. If someone wears a chand they are also required to wear a tegh (talvaar) because it is on the tegh the sooraj is present (usually on the handle/mutth). This translates to warriors under the sun/moon i.e the khalsa is tiyaar bar tiyaar. The khalsa never rests, we never sleep, we are never off gaurd, we are here for one thing and one thing only: khalsa so jo karai nit jang Be that day or night! So the separate parts of the chand do not have any significant meaning except that the chand represents warrior by night, tthe khanda in the middle is the symbol of guru gobind singh ji..a double edged sword - the bhaugti. It is the creator and the destro yer and represents righteousness, justice, etc. and the tegh we carry would represent warriors by day. So every tiyaar bar tiyaar singh/singhni should wear a chand and maryada states we should also carry a tegh whilst wearing a chand.. Bhul Chuk Maaf!
  20. You do it out of respect. If you throw your hair in the trash then you are not respecting your hair because you have put it in with the rest of the garbage. That would be beadbi
