  1. Some positive winds of change. Some highlights: Call made for Sikhs to start up firing ranges and get acquisition and training in firearms. Pinds need to halt the contruction of churches and mosques Parchariks and panthic sampardais need to leave their comfort zones and restart parchar in pinds in the face of aggressive christian campaigns jawarhar lal nehru was blamed for betrayal and denial of our raaj Sikhs have a right to seek raaj And some other points were made. Jathedaar also pointed out that the 'caging in' of sangat this year by heavy deployment of security forces is unprecedented in recent times and will not go unnoticed. All in all, this is positive news that the decimation of Badal Dal has prompted a pivot in favor of facing some real issues. The SGPC just a few years back was flat out rejecting that whole scale conversions were turning Gurdaspur and all of border areas into Christian strongholds. Im glad they have summoned enough courage to include mushrooming mosques in the list.
  2. 8. Daas really wanted to know this, as in the Sarbat Khalsa of 1986 everyone had accepted a new person as Jathedar of the Akal Takht, but when Jagtar Singh became the Jathedar; the SGPC openly denies it ever happening. (They both became Jathedar because of the Sarbat Khalsa). Can anyone also tell Daas why there would need to be a separate Jathedar of GurSikhs and Gurmukhs; (Sarbat Khalsa Jathedars), and one for Manmukhs and Mahapaapis, (SGPC Jathedars)?
  9. Just Read this today , looks like mud is being slung again but this time on SRM and Akal Takht https://www.facebook.com/1243366095693015/photos/a.1243371312359160.1073741827.1243366095693015/1332179263478364/?type=3&theater

  12. Can anyone tell me how the Badal government took over the Akal Takht and sent massands to take it over especially since the last Jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh was the one who was there before Badal? Also how'd the Massands stay in power so long without anyone stopping them until recently with the Sarbat Khalsa? (I know it's changed since Jagtar Singh Hawara became the official Jathedar.)
  13. So Bhai Hawara has the mandate of the vast majority of the Sikhs gathered at the Sarbat Khalsa. Therefore the agents of evil and corruption ie SGPC, Badal clan, Indian govt, BJP and the rest have now no authority or say over in Sikh religious-political affairs. I am wondering when will the changes be implemented? Is there a time frame to remove the pakhandi fake Sikh leaders and implement the installation of new leaders in their respective posts.
  14. Very interesting... SEAL: The seal of Akal Takht Sahib is the Sikh seal. The inscription on it is : Akal Sahai meaning : May the Almighty bless you". This seal is a blessing by Akal Takht Sahib, and, except the caretaker of Akal Takht Sahib (on the behalf of Takht Sahib only), no one can use it. It was used by the Sikh nation during their rule, under the command of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as well as the Sikh Misls. Even (Maharaja) Ranjit Singh used it for some time, though he had no right because his rule was not the rule of the Sikh nation. (It is claimed that it was a "secular" rule). Some over-enthusiastic Sikh workers and some other Sikhs due to ignorance, began to use it at the top of their letters, but the practice was almost stopped after a Sikh intellectual pointed to the mistake.

In a statement issued here today, Giani Gurbachan Singh said that these organizations should take concrete measures to ensure the release of Sikh political prisoners languishing in various jails despite completion of their prison terms as well as termination of section 25 (2) (b) of the Indian constitution which held Sikhs as a part of Hinduism. He explained that Sikhs had submitted lists of Sikh prisoners who deserve release to governments numerous times and the latter had made assurances but it has not taken any step in this direction. He concerned that any delay in taking action would be harmful. He said if the issue would not be resolved soon, it would be discussed in meeting of Panj Singh Sahiban slated for Jan 2.
  16. This is major issue that needs to be resolved, my local Gurdwara was unsure of when the Gurprubs and other dates are to occur. Revive Nanakshahi calendar: Sikh bodies Perneet Singh Tribune News Service Amritsar, November 19 The Sikh clergys decision to change the date for celebrating Guru Gobind Singhs birth anniversary from December 28 to January 7 has revived the Nanakshahi calendar row. Some organisations have questioned the move while others have renewed the demand for reverting to the original Nanakshahi calendar. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, SGPC member, said it was time that the controversy was resolved once and for all. The community must decide whether it wants to follow the Bikrami calendar or the original Nanakshahi calendar. You cannot hold deliberations every year to decide Gurpurb dates, she said. Bibi Kiranjot said the two-member panel comprising SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa had ignored technical aspects while amending the original Nanakshahi calendar. Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti said the matter should be reconsidered. He said if there were any shortcomings in the original Nanakshahi calendar, these should be removed with the help of Sikh intellectuals. Harvinder Singh Sarna, SAD (Delhi) general secretary, said the Nanakshahi calendar came into being after intense deliberations and there was no clash of Gurpurb dates. He accused the Sikh clergy of double speak. When my brother Paramjit Singh Sarna used to celebrate Gurpurbs as per the original calendar, he was dubbed anti-Panthic. Where does the clergy stand now, he asked. American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) coordinator Pritpal Singh said the implementation of the original calendar could end the confusion. He said Akal Takht must convene a meeting of Sikh organisations to resolve the issue. DSGMC to celebrate Gurpurb on Dec 28 Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjeet Singh GK said though there were many discrepancies, Akal Takht was supreme and its decision should be accepted by all. He, however, said the DSGMC would celebrate Gurpurb on December 28 as it had already reserved the Lakhi Shah Vanjara Hall for the event. Manjeet Singh GK Manjeet Singh GK voices that matter The community must decide whether it wants to follow the Bikrami calendar or the original Nanakshahi calendar. Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, sgpc member if there are any shortcomings in the original Nanakshahi calendar, these should be removed in consultation with Sikh intellectuals. Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, former jathedar of akal takht The original Nanakshahi calendar came into being after intense deliberations and there was no clash of Gurpurb dates. Harvinder Singh Sarna, sad (delhi) general secretary Top Dal Khalsa criticises Akal Takht Jathedar Says Gurpurb row has divided Panth Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, November 19 The Dal Khalsa today criticised the Akal Takht chief for creating confusion over the birth anniversary of the Tenth Guru. As per the amended Nanakshahi calendar, the anniversary falls on Jauary 7, 2015. Party spokespersons Kanwar Pal Singh, Dr Manjinder Singh and Ranbir Singh said instead of bringing about oneness, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh had created divisions in the Panth. According to the Nanakshahi calendar introduced on March 14, 2003, Guru Gobind Singh's Gurpurb falls on January 5. They appealed to the Jathedar to revert to the original calendar to end divisions within the Panth and not become a part of SAD's "divisive" politics. On BJP leaders criticising Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, they said: The Badals dont deserve any sympathy. They ditched the Sikhs to capture power, that too at the cost of Sikh interests and aspirations. Urging the Sikhs not to associate themselves with the RSS and its offshoots, the Dal Khalsa leaders said on assuming power at the Centre, "they have changed their strategy, surcharged the atmosphere with their fanatic ideology and adopted power politics to fulfil their agenda of making India a Hindu nation. They said the RSS-BJP were hell-bent on making inroads into Sikh-dominated areas. Akal Takht, SGPC pass the buck on calendar row Pak gurdwara panel willing to take initiative for resolving the controversy Perneet Singh Tribune News Service Amritsar, November 20 Though the SGPC and Akal Takht today said in unison that the confusion caused by Nanakshahi calendar row should end, they appeared to be passing the buck on initiating corrective measures. However, both of them didn't rule out the possibility of further amendments to the Nanakshahi calendar. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said, "We would certainly like this confusion to end so that we don't have to change Gurpurb dates in future. We have also kept a provision for making further amendments." He, however, said they had received no suggestions till now. He also made it clear that the two-member panel comprising SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, which was constituted for making amendments to the calendar a few years ago, would have to take the initiative, if any changes were to be made. Makkar threw the ball in Akal Takht's court saying "whatever Akal Takht decides on the issue will be acceptable to us. We have always acknowledged the supremacy of Akal Takht." On the other hand, the newly constituted team of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) is contemplating to hold a "World Sikh Convention" at Nankana Sahib to deliberate on the issue. Talking to The Tribune on the phone from Pakistan, PSGPC member Gopal Singh said they were to hold the convention alongside Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations early this month, but could not do so because some key Sikh leaders from Indian and Germany could not reach Pakistan due to visa issues. He said they would soon announce a fresh date for the convention. The Sikh leaders in Pakistan plan to extend an invitation to the Jathedars of all five Takhts, besides key Sikh organisations like the SGPC and the DSGMC for the convention. Former PSGPC president Bishen Singh said, "We may be having our differences with the SGPC over the calendar issue, but we would welcome them to air their views. We will also be sending invites to Sikh leaders in countries like the USA, the UK, Canada and even Afghanistan. We wish to bridge the divide in the community and work for the unity of Sikhs across the globe." The PSGPC follows the original Nanakshahi calendar, while the SGPC follows its amended version. In the past, the SGPC and the PSGPC had been at loggerheads over the Nanakshahi calendar row. 17. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Amritsar, Punjab: The Akal Takht welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court to maintain status quo on Haryana’s gurdwaras, and asked the two warring sides, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC), to abide by the verdict and refrain from indulging in any violence. “What the Supreme Court has said now, is precisely what we had said in our directive on July 28. We had also called for status quo till a final decision does not come from the Akal Takht,” said Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh after presiding over a sixhour meeting of the Sikh high priests here on Thursday. Addressing the media after the meeting, the jathedar of Sikhism’s temporal seat announced that a coordination committee would be formed “very soon” for finding a “meaningful” solution to the row. He did not elaborate on the composition of the committee but said it would solicit views of the parties concerned and put these before the consideration Singh Sahibs (the Sikh clergy) for consideration. Asked whether it would be advisable on his part to form a committee as the matter was now under the jurisdiction of the country’s apex court, he was quick to reply: “Anything that concerns our gurdwaras comes under the preview of the Akal Takht.” He also asked all Sikhs not to be misled by rumours and propaganda aimed at inciting violence. “Right at the outset, we had issued directions for maintaining peace and for finding an amicable solution. Now, again, we ask all to abide by this directive,” he added. At the meeting, the clergy condemned the violence at Kurukshetra and at GuhlaCheeka and criticised the forcible takeover of shrines by the HSGMC at three places. NO HARSH DECISIONS However, contrary to expectations, the clergy did not take any harsh decisions against those responsible for Wednesday’s violence in Haryana. As the meeting stretched on, there were apprehensions that a couple of members of the HSGPC would be excommunicated from the Panth for their role in the violence. The Takht has already excommunicated HSGPC ad hoc chief Jagdish Singh Jhinda and senior vicepresident Didar Singh Nalwi for their role in the formation of a separate gurdwara committee for Haryana. The third person excommunicated was Haryana cabinet minister Harmohinder Singh Chattha, who headed a commission that had backed the formation of the HSGMC. To a question, the jathedar said, “In the days to come, we will decide on this matter (of action) as the violence and forcible takeover amounts to desecration of shrines.” It was during the course of the meeting that Giani Gurbachan Singh was informed of the SC’s decision. Details of what may have been discussed during meeting were not shared with the media, and a press release was prepared keeping in view the court verdict. Others present in the meeting included Takht Kesgarh Sahib jathedar Giani Mal Singh and Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh. Source: Sikh Sangat News
  18. Akal Takht directs Sikh groups to call off conventions osted by: Navhind Times in National News CHANDIGARH: Two separate Sikh conventions called by opposing groups over the controversy around the creation of the Haryana Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) have been called off after the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, intervened Saturday. The Akal Takht Saturday directed that all conventions of Sikhs called by various groups on the HSGPC controversy be called off. Akal Takht Jathedar (chief) Gurbachan Singh said that as per the order all Sikh conventions called on Sunday and Monday should be cancelled. The conventions were called by the Shiromani Akali Dal in Amritsar and by Haryana Sikh leaders, who are part of the ad hoc HSGPC committee, in Karnal (Haryana). Both sides are locked in a bitter stand-off over the creation of the HSGPC. The conventions were being seen as a flashpoint between the two sides with the potential of dividing the Sikh community. “All Sikhs are concerned today. Whatever happened in Saharanpur today has increased our concern. The Sikh quam (community) is facing a new challenge today. In this situation, I order all groups to call off their conventions in Amritsar (Punjab) and Karnal (Haryana),” Gurbachan Singh announced in Amritsar. He said that the Akal Takht will call a meeting of Sikh high priests and senior Sikh leaders later to resolve the issue (over the creation of the HSGPC in Haryana). Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, which had called for a World Sikh convention in Amritsar’s Golden Temple complex on July 27, immediately announced that in view of the Akal Takht directive, July 27 Sikh convention stood cancelled. “We have called off the Sikh convention to be held tomorrow (Sunday). We have taken this step in the interest of the Sikh community following the Akal Takht’s directive. We are informing the Sikh leaders about this,” Punjab education minister and Akali Dal spokesman Daljeej Singh Cheema said. The other convention called by the HSGPC leaders Monday (July 28) in Karnal was also postponed. These leaders are supporting the creation of the HSGPC. “We hold the Akal Takht in supreme respect. We have called off our Sikh convention to be held in Karnal Monday,” HSGPC leader Jagdish Singh Jhinda said in Kurukshetra, 110 km from here. The Akali Dal and the Amritsar-based Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) are locked in a bitter controversy with the Congress government in Haryana led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda over the creation of the HSGPC. They have both strongly opposed the creation of the new HSGPC for Haryana Sikh shrines. The Haryana assembly had June 11 passed a bill under which a new committee would be set up to manage gurdwaras (Sikh shrines) in Haryana. The Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Bill, 2014, got the assent of the Haryana governor June 14. The SGPC, the mini-parliament of Sikh religious affairs, which controls gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, will lose control over 72 gurdwaras in Haryana with the new law. The SGPC, which has a Rs 950 crore annual budget, controls majority of the gurdwaras in Punjab, including the holiest of all Sikh shrines ‘Harmandar Sahib’ (popularly known as Golden Temple) in Amritsar. Badal has warned of an agitation over the issue and said that this could disturb peace in the region.
  19. Takht no to ‘patit’ Sikhs in gurdwara panels abroad The Jathedar objected to the presence of ‘patit’ (apostate) Sikhs in gurdwara managements abroad. He said it had been decided that all gurdwaras should have only ‘sabat soorat’ Sikhs (with unshorn hair) in their committees. He also directed the managements not to ban the entry of anybody in the gurdwara premises. http://sikhsangat.org/2013/akal-takht-decides-no-chairs-for-elderly-inside-gurdwara-hall/ This is a great decision by Akal Takht. How is going to be implemented by the Sangat? Yours thoughts on this major development.
  20. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh ji The below post was posted a while back in gupt and subsequently locked, no reasons given. Though its not my place to comment on the posters sexuality, i do think he made some valid points worth discussing. Also, if for some reason admin think this post should be locked, please give reasons. Thank you. " Hello All, Before I get to my question, I'd like to give some background as to where it's coming from. I am a western born and raised proud Sikh male. I am not amritdhari, as I don't believe I will be able to follow the strict "rules" constructed by society and applied to those who choose that path. I am also gay and therein lies the issue. From my research, I have come to understand that the Gurbani is silent on the issue of homosexuality. However, the Akal Takth has taken a heavy stance against it (I find this ironic since Sikhi is a religion founded on the basis of acceptance and equality. Telling people there's no such thing as homosexuals and they don't deserve the support of the community is the last thing I would expect from a leader of the faith.) Recently, I have been contemplating telling my friends and family of my sexuality. I understand this will cause them much pain, but it is who I am and people deserve to know the "real" me, and I also deserve to be proud of who I am (by hiding it, I'm making it out as something to be ashamed of; which I don't believe it is). Also, the idea of marriage is becoming a larger issue in my life, and there is only so much time that I will be able to manage to put it off. I have 3 questions which I'd like opinions about: 1) How would you react to the knowledge that someone you were close to was gay? 2) What are your thoughts on the consequences of the combination of my sexuality and religion? 3) What are your thoughts on the Akal Takth's stance against gay marriage and homosexuality? Now before people ask: Yes, I have tried "not to be gay", but it's not a choice. Trying is akin to pretending; which is lying; which is wrong. Also, have you "tried" not to be straight?"

  22. For the first time, a petition has been filed challenging an order and, thereby, the authority of the jathedar of Akal Takht, highest temporal seat of Sikhs. It came up for hearing in the Delhi high court on Tuesday and was adjourned for October 23. The petition that came up before the bench of justice Kailash Gambhir and justice Indermeet Kaur stated that the jathedar interfered in the system of justice. The court, so far, has issued no notice against anyone. Filed by a man named Jatinder Singh, the petition has not made the jatehdar a respondent but said that his forcing former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Paramjit Singh Sarna to withdraw his writ petition in the Delhi high court against building the 1984 riots' memorial in Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib in Delhi amounted to criminal contempt of court. The petition makes Punjab deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal; Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar; and DSGMC president Manjit Singh GK respondents. It stated that the three had directed the Akal Takht jathedar to order Sarna to withdraw the writ petition, and so should be punished for contempt of court. On July 26, Sarna had appeared before the Takht and accepted to withdraw his petition. On June 12, the DSGMC had laid the foundation stone of the memorial dedicated to Sikhs killed in the 1984 riots, and Sarna had moved the Delhi high court, arguing that it couldn't be built inside a gurdwara. On June 15, the Takht summoned Sarna on the issue of his objection. Defending the respondents, lawyer HS Phoolka told the court that contempt was not maintainable because the Takht could intervene in religious matters. GK has called the new petition most shocking for the Sikh community. Questioning the role of a standing counsel of the Delhi government who gave approval for filing the contempt petition, GK said the Congress had been making continuous efforts to undermine the Takht's authority. "It is first time that anyone has alleged in court that the Akal Takht jathedar has committed criminal contempt," he added. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Punjab/Chandigarh/Akal-Takht-jathedar-s-authority-challenged/SP-Article1-1133218.aspx
