  1. Is it right or wrong to wear a kulgi in the presence of the king of kings SGGS ji ? If wrong then why do the Gurdwara / Ganthi allow it ?
  2. VJKK VJKF Sat Sangat Ji, I had a question regarding using Shastar for training. I train with Shastar regurlarly, and on one occasion one of my friends came over while I was training. I happened to be training with my Sri Sahib/Kirpan that day and when my friend saw me he said that I shouldn't be taking my Kirpaan out of it's case like that because apparently it wants khoon(blood) when you take it out and taking it out for any other reason than bhog is beadbi. I tried telling him that I was only using it to train and that I never start without an Ardas and asking Guru ji for permission but he said I should use a different one other than my kakaar. The probelm is, I need to use my specific Kirpaan because it is the one that is always with me, so if I had to ever take it out for any combat situation (Which I hope never happens) I want to be fully functional and efficeient with my specific Kirpaan. So my question is: Is it beadbi to take out your kirpan for training, and also, does it really want blood when you take it out. VJKK VJKF
  3. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh, I don't know if I understand this correctly or not, but from what I understand, a beadbi is an insult to a kakar, the saroop of Guru Sahib, kesh, etc. Am I correct in this understanding? If I am, I was just wondering what would constitute a beadbi to the kara? I'm asking this so that when I do decide to wear a kara, I will know what not to do (I already don't smoke, drink alcohol, do drugs, gamble, etc.). Thank you for your replies. Gurfateh, Justin
  4. Does anyone have info on the recent apology by Satvinder and harvinder Singh for their having changed the Sakhi about the 8th Guru Ji and saying that they did not make chajju do arth or words to that effect, during their current tour in the uk, heard something briefly about this on Akaal channel last night by a Taksali Singh live at Guru Hargobind ji Gurdwara tividale .
  5. Dear All, Not many of you might be aware that there exists a gurdwara in Dubai. This gurdwara was inaugurated in January 2012 and the person who has been driving this project is called Surinder Kandhari, a prominent local businessman belonging to the Sikh diaspora. Initially, we were happy to finally have our place of worship in this country but lately a lot of heretical and anti-gurmat practices have openly started happening in the Gurdwara. The gurdwara is being run like a family owned business and in an ideal world, Mr Kandhari and his cohorts would have been summoned before Akal Takht on grounds of sacrilege but since Akal Takht is under the control of criminals and impostors, there is no point in harboring any hopes from them. I would like to draw the attention of the global sangat towards some practices which are tantamount to making a mockery of our religion: 1) Separate chairs and tables have been placed in thee langar hall and darbar hall. Whilst the idea is to provide comfortable seating for the elderly, these seats are usually occupied by the members of Hindu community who visit the gurdwara. Furthermore, these Hindus act as if they are in a restaurant while having langar. The matter has been repeatedly brought to the attention of the management who refuse to act since they do not want to upset the affluent members of Hindu community. 2) Members of Hindu community regularly show lack of respect to our religious sentiments by showing up to gurdwara in inappropriate clothing (mostly their girls) or letting their children run amok during kirtan. 3) Untrained and non Amrtidharis people are being allowed to do kirtan. It is not uncommon to see kids from influential families being allowed to perform the seva of doing kirtan on Fridays. While it is a good idea, it is definitely not good to see non-Amritdhari children without any knowledge of gurbani unable to pronounce bani correctly. Would you allow somebody to distort shabad of bani? No. But it happens here because these kids belong to affluent "donors" and management would not want to "upset" them. 4) Members of Hindu community routinely throw half-eaten food from langar in garbage bins. When the matter was brought to the attention of sevadars, they expressed their helplessness. 5)Langar hall is used as banquet hall to host wedding and engagement parties. aIt is common to see wedding and engagement ceremonies, including some ceremonies involving mixed Hindu-Sikh couples in gurdwara. During such ceremonies, the langar hall is cleared of sangat and is used as a banquet hall. Non-Sikh waiters and caterers are allowed to serve non-langar food to people. This part of guurdwara is used as a party venue and it is not uncommon to see people including non-Sikhs indulging in gluttony and gossip in gurdwara. It may be noted, that on such days the management asks the snagat to leave early since the langar hall has been "booked". 6) Known heretic, Darshan Singh Ragi was invited to perform kirtan in the gurdwara in January. I am sure everybody in the West is familiar with Darshan Ragi and his heretical rants. Furthermore, one Pakistani who claims to have the "gangasagar" of Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj was also invited and he had a field day collecting "donations" from gullible Sikhs who were openly bowing to and rubbing their foreheads against the utensil. 7) Now comes the biggest blasphemy of them all. About two weeks ago, the gurdwara played host to a delegation from local Islamic centre who were invited by Mr. Kandhari to "break Ramadan fast" in gurdwara. The visiting delegation were seated on chairs and tables in the langar hall and the gurdwara management actually played adhan the mohammedan call foor prayer in the Gurdwara! Would you believe this?? All this is happening in Gurdwara in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. It is a sacrilege of the highest order to chant words of any other religion in Guru's presence and to play the Mohameddan prayer in a gurdwara extolling their god allah is the crime worth harshest punishment. Would you expect mohammedans to invite Sikhs to do nitnem in a mosque??? Furthermore, a few days before this event, Mr. Kandhari and a few of his cronies were invited to Al Manar Islamic centre where they listened to a lecture on greatness of Mohammedan religion and virtues of fasting during Ramadan. In return, Mr. Kandhari made a speech extolling the virtues of Mohammedan religion and made grovellling attempts to the audience of mohammedans that Sikhi was similar to Islamic religion and "our book" Guru Granth Sahib is similar to Koran in teachings. He also made a groveling speech thanking the local authorities for letting the langar run during Ramadhan. Lastly he committed the ultimate sacrilege by presenting a plaque to Muslims which showed the Islamic shahada and mool mantar inscribed together. How could anybody in their right minds even think of juxtaposing the bani of Akalpurkh with the writings of Moahmmedan book? Mr Kandhari committed the cardinal sin of distorting bani by trying to explain to the audience of muslims that mool mantar and sura al fateh were essentially of same essence. Of course, nothing could be further from truth than this. For all the gross sacrilege, Mr Kandhari got his five seconds of fame when one of the local newspapers published an article with his picture on its backpage. The management of the gurdwara have even boasted about this openly on their facebook page. I have posted few links to this story, so please check it out. Mr. Kandhari wants to gain cheap publicity and wants to be seen in the good books of the authorities so as to preserve his families business interests but to use a gurdwara for nefarious personal objectives is an utterly reprehensible act worthy of strictest condemnation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2pItZYsSLE ( Kandhari's speech in Al Manar Centre, please copy and paste the link) https://www.facebook.com/khalsapanth011?fref=ts http://www.khaleejtimes.com/ramadan2014/article-display.asp?xfile=/data/ramadannews/2014/July/ramadannews_July67.xml&section=ramadannews Whilst most of you are busy quibbling amongst each other discussing mundane things on this forum, there are much more sinister things happening in the background.
  6. GURDASPUR, Punjab (July 25, 2014)—In a press statement, the SGPC President Avtar Makkar has condemned the incident at Gurdwara Miri Piri Patshahi Chhevin, located on the Sri Hargobindpur Talwara road. His statement came after a volume of Siri Guru Granth Sahib was severely damaged after a fire incident at the Gurdwara which was caused by a short circuit. The incident took place at 10 AM, shortly after the Sikh Sangat had left the morning services. Makkar alleged that from time to time, the SGPC publishes notifications in the newspapers, asking Gurdwara sevadars to ensure proper electric wiring in Gurdwaras, to ensure there are no incidents of short-circuits. Sikh24 has reported multiple such incidents, in which Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji’s volumes have been left with severe damage. The local Sikh Sangat is however suspicious over the incident, and have asked for an in-depth inquiry. It has been alleged that there was no electricity in the Gurdwara when the incident took place, further, only the bed in the sukhasan room was left burnt. Source:Sikh24.Com
  7. The attached leaflets are being published with an Hindu Mahant kathaa to be carried out inside the Gurudwara. This is BIG Insult to the gurudwara and our Guru’s Preaching. Need help to stop this. This Gurudwara’s President is close to the councillor of New Ham and is known to be carrying out such activities in the Gurudwara to make money. Please help to expose and stop this insult through media and sangat.

    Huddersfield Gurdwara

Does anyone know what happened at hudds Gurdwara today (main). Heard there was a kicking off with the committee? Thanks
  9. WJKK WJFK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXCX6E2TGNU&feature=youtu.be Video shows Paathi who is the president of the Gurdwara as well watching youtube during his raul in akhand paath sahib. Akhand paath should be read and listened to by the sangat, and not merely read as a ritual to make money for gurdwara's. No one is getting laha of more than one akhand paath being read at the same time. Sangat needs to stop this from happening around the world, gurdwara's are turning into money making machines and too much beadbi happens with numerous akhand paaths happening all at once. Gurbani is not ritualistic verses like brahmin veda's... Gurbani is a our guru, our teacher for our lives and we are doing so much beadbi in Akhand Paath's. Sangats views? Bhul Chuk Maaf
  10. An application went in to Bradford Council regarding a new meat processing plant to be opened next to Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara Bradford. Next Tuesday 13th August there is a consultation in Bradford Town Hall starting at 9.45am to discuss openly this application. A petition was done and handed in to the council about 2-3 months ago. A Benti to Sangat to turn up to the consultation to show that the Sikh Community strongly oppose this application. There is already a stench around the Leeds Road area from 1-2 meat plants on Hammerton Street/Buck Street between Wakefield Rd and Leeds Rd. Last Sunday the terrible smell of carcasses reached Gurdwara Singh Sabha (further away from Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara) and was very disturbing to the Sangat in the Darbaar Sahib during the Divaan. A meat plant directly next door to a Gurdwara Sahib would be horrific. Muslims would protest and never allow a Pig farm, slaughter house or a pub to open next to a Mosque so we need to show that Sikhs also object to a meat processing plant next to a Gurdwara Sahib. The planning application can be viewed here, please leave your comments on the planning website for the council to see. http://www.planning4bradford.com/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=MI3KWNDHLT000 PLEASE ADD COMMENTS TO PLANNING WEBSITE ASAP AS MEETING IS ON TUESDAY
  11. On 22 January, the Austrian jail authority, accompanied by sniffer dogs, raided the belongings of five Sikhs while they were away from their cells. They showed great disregard for the sacred gutka's (prayer books) and other religious literature. All their belongings were left in a real state of disarray. You may recall that Hardeep Singh, Tarsem Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Jaspal Singh and Surjit Singh all received 17 year prison sentences in 2009, for the murder of Ramanand in Vienna. Ramanand, a controversial figure, disrespected the Guru Granth Sahib and committed 'beadbi' of the saroop. Hardeep Singh has begun a hungerstrike by way of a protest at the harsh treatment they have received. SOPW will be taking up this case with the various authorities and organisations throughout UK and Europe. We are concerned for the Singhs well being whilst in prison and want to ensure that their civil rights are protected. We support Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa
  12. There are recent revisions on the Nihang page that need to be reverted back, they suggest that it is okay to for Nihangs to drink alcohol. The source is dodgy as its is from excommunicated Niddar Singh Nihang but also it seems to be the only source that says such things so it may be applicable to the "undue-weight" policy, shouldn't be hard getting rid of it. Thanks.
  13. http://dailysikhupdates.com/2013/09/19/pictures-of-guru-gobind-singh-ji-hung-in-a-bar-in-california-sikhs-outraged/ http://dailysikhupdates.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Screen-Shot-2013-09-25-at-11.32.05-AM.png As of late Thursday night pictures of Sikh Gurus continue to be hung inside the “Maharaja Room” of Pikey Bar. United Sikhs representative Karam Grewal spoke to the manager of the bar Hallelujah Walcott, who told him that the portraits would be removed “very soon.” However, no definite timeline was established. Karam Grewal of United Sikhs was quoted telling India-West Magazine: “Our religion is very against drinking. Hanging pictures of our guru where people are drinking is very disrespectful,” Karam Grewal, told India-West Magazine. “Images of Guru Gobind Singh are only found in gurdwaras or in private homes,” the Indian American said, adding that Pikey has tried to create an Indo-British feel to its Maharaja room, where portraits of maharajahs hang alongside pictures of Sikh saints. “They’re being passive aggressive. They have said they will take them down, but have not told us when. They realize that they have hurt a lot of people, but they’re not doing anything about it,” she said, adding that Pikey’s managers should close that part of the restaurant or at least cover the portraits until the matter is settled. Another Publication called WEHOville spoke to the Manager of Pikey’s Bar Noam Rubin regarding the removal of the pictures, the manager said Pikey’s is waiting for replacement paintings to arrive. The bar is owned by New York hotelier Sean MachPherson whose net worth is estimated at 800 Million dollars according to India West Magazine. Committed, Inc. is the company the Bar is under which Owns eight restaurants in Southern California and a number of hotels in New York. United Sikhs have asked the owner to donate the portraits to a local Gurdwara after removal.

  15. http://sikhchic.com/article-detail.php?cat=33&id=4424 Let's make this article full of mistakes into a learning experience. Turn by turn can members point out what are the mistakes and why are they mistakes. Just in case the author or the man praised in the article are watching. You both are especially invited to this learning experience. The Sidak Retreat, San Antonio, Texas, USA Guru Granth Sahib is replete with references to the mythical tyrant-oppressor Harnakash and his arch-enemy and victim, his own infant son Prahlad. As the story goes, Harnakash was initially a pious man who had spent years in prayer and service of the gods. So much so that they were immensely impressed by his devotion and offered to reward him with anything he desired. Harnakash was intelligent and innovative. He gave it considerable thought and figured out all the possible loopholes, and came up with a perfect list of powers he wanted from his mentors. Knowing that mortality was the lot of all who were born, he had figured out a way to beat death. Grant me these wishes, Harnakash asked of the gods: Let neither human nor animal, neither things animate nor inanimate, have the power to kill me. Neither a god nor a mortal should be able to harm me. May I be free from the reach of Death anywhere inside my home … or anywhere outside it. Death should be unable to touch me either in the light of day, or under cover of darkness … neither on the earth nor in the water … And so carried on and on the list of powers Harnakash had concocted to obtain in order to turn himself invincible. The gods, though having promised him a carte blanche, were concerned that they were thus creating an entity more powerful than themselves, but felt compelled to keep their word. Reluctantly, begrudgingly, they granted him all that he asked for. It didn’t take long for Harnakash to feel the full extent of the powers he had thus acquired. And, he quickly became the supreme ruler of the land. The extraordinary, super-human powers he now enjoyed went to his head, and he turned into a tyrant and oppressor. His son, Prahlad -- though still a young boy -- had continued the early lessons in piety he had imbibed from his father and continued along his spiritual trajectory unabated, until he had outgrown the idols and the petty gods and goddesses and was now connected directly with the One Lord of all Creation, Waheguru. So, when King Harnakash issued an edict that all in the land were to worship him, Harnakash, henceforth and pay homage to no other, his son Prahlad refused. What ensued was a steady escalation of Harnakash’s ire against Prahlad until the tyrant felt he had no choice but to kill Prahlad in order to protect and secure his suzerainty. Harnakash resorted to every weapon and method of torture imaginable to strike terror in the hearts and minds of the people. Prahlad remained steadfast, though, and appearing docile and helpless, always escaped injury and death. Because the all-powerful Waheguru always stepped in -- albeit secretly and behind the scenes -- at the last moment and rescued the child from harm. Things got worse as Harnakash encountered one defeat after another, his rage magnified by his frustration that though he had all the powers he had asked for, he was unable to overpower a child. His atrocities became worse by the day until Harnakash’s own mentors, the gods, admonished him. But he spurned their overtures and became more strident than ever, confident that they were impotent against him. In desperation, they turned up at the door of the Supreme One, Waheguru. “Help us, O Lord, to destroy the monster we have created. Because we too are powerless before him!” Prahlad had made no entreaties, but Waheguru, being Waheguru, knew … and was particularly moved by Prahlad‘s predicament. Later that day, in the twilight hour -- when it was neither day nor night, Harnakash was about to leave his palace. As he stepped over the threshold -- which was neither inside his home nor outside, he found himself in the grip of a Nar-Singh -- a creature being half man, half lion, that was neither human nor animal. Neither was it a god or a mortal. ['nar' = human; 'singh' = lion.] The Nar-Singh slung Harnakash over until he was in mid-air -- touching neither ground nor water -- and tore out his entrails with his fingernails. And so, goes the tale, Harnakash met his end. The fingernails that were used to dismember him were, as promised, not ‘living’, being ‘dead’, and they weren’t an inanimate object, having once been ‘living‘. The world was free to live in peace again … and Prahlad could worship as he pleased. * * * * * It is not a coincidence, I believe, that the Guru Granth refers to the Harnakash - Prahlad story at least 27 times. Used as a metaphor, it reminds us over and over again of our role as Sikhs in society -- every society that we live in -- and of our duty and obligation to confront every Harnakash to the best of our ability. 1984 and the years that have followed have demonstrated to us that we now have the challenge of having to grapple with an arrogant regime which has turned into a Harnakash at the hands of short-sighted, narrow-minded religious Hindu fanatics. Drunk with power and immunity, the citizenry is being oppressed, and we, the Sikhs, are bearing the full brunt of it. It is time once again for Prahlad to appear -- not one but a legion of Prahlads, because our Gurus exhort us to live the life of one who the Guru Granth confers the honorofic of ‘bhagat’ (saint) -- Bhagat Prahlad! The Sikh vision of Prahlad has an added dimension to him and her. Each Prahlad is a Nar-Singh as well! Combined … a sant-sipahi … saint-soldier. True to form, in response to the Harnakash era that we find ourselves in, Sikhs have begun to rise to the occasion. I see, slowly but steadily, Nar-Singh - Prahlads springing up wherever I go, whichever way I turn. Here at the Sidak Retreat in San Antonio, in the land of The Alamo, I see them amongst those who lead … and I see a whole crop of them in the making amongst those who are here to learn from those who lead. Man-Lions and Woman-Lionesses -- Singhs and Kaurs of a new mettle … and made of a new metal. Armed with iPhones and iPads and laptops, ready to take on and overcome every mischief any Harnakash can conjure. The man from whose vision Sidak was born is himself one such Nar-Singh - Prahlad. * * * * * Harinder Singh was born and brought up in Jhansi, a small town -- a city, in western terms -- in southern Uttar Pradesh (“U.P.“), a state in India located in the Hindu-Hindi belt bordering the state of Madhya Pradesh (“M.P.“). He was 12 years old when he accompanied his parents and siblings -- an elder sister and a younger brother -- first to Amritsar, from where they took a train to Lahore, Pakistan, for a tour of the historical gurdwaras -- Punja Sahib, Nankana Sahib, Dera sahib, et al -- all now on the wrong side of the border since the partition of the Sikh homeland in 1947 and the creation of two new countries, Pakistan and India. It was May 25, 1984, the day they left for Lahore. Two weeks later, on the eve of their scheduled return, while still in West Punjab, they heard about the Indian army’s assault on the Darbar Sahib … but no more than skeletal information was forthcoming. They remained stranded in Pakistan for days, sensing that something had gone terribly wrong back in India, but not knowing exactly what. When they were finally allowed to head back, their train was sealed as it left Lahore and did not stop until it was in Ambala, Haryana. En route, with its 1300 passengers hungry and tired, the train silently chugged through a mournful city under the shroud of darkness; all they could discern through closed windows and shutters were billows of smoke still emanating from various points on the horizon. * * * * * Six months later, while asleep at home in Jhansi late one night, Harinder and his family were awakened by a mob hollering outside on the street. It was November 1, 1984. The day before, Indira Gandhi -- India’s prime minister and the architect of the criminal attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar -- had been summarily executed in far away New Delhi by members of the government’s own elite security unit, specially trained to protect India’s Constitution. The executioners belonged to the Sikh Faith. As to who exactly had directed the operation through the crack unit’s chain of command, has yet to be aired publicly with any real transparency. Wheels of a highly organized pogrom were put into motion within hours of Indira’s death, led by ruling party politicians, with full complicity of cabinet ministers, members of parliament, the police and the military. Thousands of innocent Sikhs -- men, women and children -- were murdered on the streets and within their homes, in broad daylight. The mob outside 12 year-old Harinder’s home was shouting slogans of revenge. Revenge, here in distant Jhansi, several hundred miles away? The only nexus was the same as in New Delhi: the occupants of the house belonged to the same religion as the executioners in India’s capital, and that the mob was comprised of fanatic Hindus. Harinder and his siblings were removed for safety by a neighbour, himself a Hindu, from a few houses away. Harinder’s home was partially burned by the mob, but his parents too managed to escape injury. It was discovered a few weeks later that the mob had been instigated and directed by their immediate next-door neighbour who was a card-holding member of the Jan Sangh, the predecessor of the present day Hindu right-wing BJP-RSS party, which is currently led by wannabe-prime-minister Narendra Modi. No charges were ever laid against any member of the mob … or the instigator. Not long thereafter, Harinder’s parents -- his father was an officer with India’s Central Railways, his mother a professor of English at a local college -- applied for immigration to the United states. A year or so later, they landed, first Des Moines, Iowa … and then moved to Kansas and made their first home in the Land of the Free. Harinder -- the future co-founder of SikhRI and Sidak -- was then 14 years old. Tomorrow: Harinder joins the aerospace industry.

  17. I have come to say that us Sikhs are starting to get annoyed on some of these Singh's around here in Smethwick. We have a few issues on some of them. As far as I'm concerned there are only two so far but I might not know the rest around here. We have came to the concern of Suraj Singh and Gurpreet Singh also known as Billo. These two are Amritdhari singh's and they smoke and drink alcohol in Dartmouth park every Thursday and where Billo wear a choola and a blue dastar. He drinks with Goreh, kale and Muslims. Singh's from Smethwick have tried to stop them by telling them its wrong to do this but they don't bother to listen and they think its something normal to do. Suraj's parents are both Amritshak and I don't think they will be pleased to find that their son is doing this. Billo's mum is a Amritshak whereas his dad is a drug dealer. I'm informing you because I think that you should show this video on Sikh Channel and places where people would be able to see these two so that they get in trouble for what they are doing. It wrong and its putting the name of our religion down. Please try to understand this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4HoYe366xE Thank you.
