    Nutrition

What is the optimal nutritional regime for health & longevity? (this is not a vegi vs meat topic or anything like that, so dont start) I believe in Gurbani it says to talk little, sleep little and eat little. Is this just from a spiritual perspective so one can concentrate on bhagti or is this also best for optimal health? I know that intermittment fasting is popular these days and caloric restriction studies have shown positive effects on health and longetivity. I've heard in some samparda's they eat only twice a day, is that true? Can anyone shed further light on this that may have stayed with nihang dals or taksal etc or how/when they eat etc? Also why do nihangs call tea tidh fookni lol? Are there any other references in Guru Granth Sahib Ji...or even Dasam Granth or Sarbloh Granth in regards to health & diet? This topic interests me so it would be good to hear whatever knowledge people may have
  6. These look really nice i really want 1 ? lol

    Food of the Ancestors

Hi i was wondering if anyone had information on what people from the wider Punjab (india and Pakistan) originally ate? Has the diet changed much from say great-grandparents? I’m trying to figure out if we in the western world should still primarily and only consume the same food of our ancestors? Given that we have access to so many other cuisines should we not be still only consuming what we need based on our make-up (DNA)? General rule being if your grandparents or great-grandparents wouldn’t recognise it, don’t eat it?
  10. Do you know how many vitamins there are? If you thought four... there are actually 26 in total. A person's body and health can improve hugely if we eat the right type of food. Brazil nuts, eat three and that'll be over 60% semolina in you. Eat 10 grams of pumpkin seeds that is the same amount! Raw carrots have vitamins A. I can go on BUT... It's important to consume one portion of steamed vegetable a day. A good portion in fact. Broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, parsnips - NO saabji isn't right. It's good, should be consumed but defo not right as it's a hardcore effort to kill all the vitamins they provide. Leave daal (chickpea) in cold water for 24 hours? THAT has more vitamins. This is important for the Gut flora and one can go in society by simply having washed with soap and water, as the diet gives off the fragrance to body. And for breakfast it important to have breakfast that contains many many vitamins and minerals. Porridge is perfect example. In UK it'll be Ready Brek (or Ready Go from Asda brand). LOOK OUT FOR THE NUTRIENT INFORMATION! It'll mention several vitamins and minerals. THAT is the right porridge you want. ADD to it, 2 tea spoon of Flax seeds. YOU WILL RECIEVE LOADS AND LOADS OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS ALREADY. OH and by doing so? every morning you will feel fully awake before dawn, so greatly helps in Amritvela and meditation. Food is important in a meditators life. SORRY to say! But Crisp, chocolate, soft drinks do not give any real vitamins and minerals to the body
  11. As an Amritdhaari of 10 years I started doing something only 4 years ago... eating EGG based ingredients. WHY? you ask? because I AM A JEEB RASS (TONGUE TASTING) GUY! What? It's possible to avoid it? YES BUT LIKE I SAID! I indulge in good food tastes. "Why not cook your own food at home and make t eggless?" BECAUSE I admit to being a tongue taster AND part of tongue taster, there will always be something missing in eggless compared to egg based. Anyone will know on consumption. Ok, now that we've established am a jeeb rass insaan, let's take a look at the "Benefits," I can eat cakes, Jaffa cakes, MUFFINS (my fav), fancy angels, mayonnaise, croissants and anything egg based. Free range, whole, yolks saara kuch! NOW! for hypocritical yet unexplainable reasons I do not eat egg on it's own neither if it's in a hot meal, because it's not right I HATE BEING A HYPOCRITE Sorry folks I know I bring you bad news about myself but part of jeeb rass insaan, right? it's all about enjoying the delicacies available. I only purchase them from shops/ bars NOT home made. EDIT: Year is 2022 - With Kirpa, Maharaj has woken me up and I stopped eating eggs about 3 years ago. Fateh.
  12. I just wanted to add this short note on genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). The issue of multi-colored variants of a single species leads naturally to the thought, often expressed, that GMOs are not bad because humans have been genetically modifying organisms since forever, and it is through genetic modification that we got different colored carrots. Well, I vehemently disagree! In the case of colored carrots, humans are simply mixing different combinations of already existing genetic information within the carrots through selective breeding. A monster chimera can't come into existence just because of certain safeguards placed by either God or (if you don't believe in God) nature. This is much different from a genetically modified organism: A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. In most cases, GMOs have been altered with DNA from another organism, be it a bacterium, plant, virus or animal; these organisms are sometimes referred to as "transgenic" organisms. Or, from an anti-GMO site: A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods (also called gene splicing), gene modification or transgenic technology. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Visit the What is GMO page for more information and a list of high-risk crops. https://www.nongmoproject.org/gmo-facts/ Now, the reason I mention all of this, is because as Sikhs, we should naturally be concerned with what we're putting into our bodies, since it's a temple of God (Harimandir). Of course, there's nothing in Gurbani specifically addressing GMOs, but if you just take a basic proposition of Sikhism (that the world is running in accordance to Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Hankar), then you can see that the entire impetus for GMOs is the Lobh (greed) of giant agribusinesses like Monsanto and Cargil. Most corn in the US and Canada is GMO. Then they also take it and make High-Fructose Corn Syrup out of it, which becomes the sweetener in your Coca-Cola. Something to avoid. In our homeland, most bangan (eggplant) is GMO--referred to as "BT Bangan" (BT for bio-technology). Please avoid to whatever extent possible, and definitely not suitable for Guru's Langar.
  13. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh Sometimes my parents buy vegetables and stuff from shops which also sell halal meat, I don't eat anything from halal restaurants and I am confused whether or not it is right to buy ingredients from grocers that have halal butchers inside. But then again I buy stuff from supermarkets and stuff which also sells halal products. I know it's a stupid question, but i don't know what to do.
  14. Hi, I have an extensive intolerance to numerous plant foods and as a result of trying to be vegetarian, my health has deteriorated. I've been admitted to hospital numerous times, and I keep being advised my health will continue to decline - unless I start consuming meat again. I want to ask if according to Sikhi this is ok? I love Sikhi, but if my health continues to do down, I won't be well enough to continue to practice the rest.
  15. For those of you who would like to know more on how to make a lifestyle change in going organic, have a look at one of my may posts on the steps we took over the last 18 months: http://darmy2k.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/going-organic.html
  16. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh I watched a Katha on Rehat Maryda And he said that we should eat anything that been touch with person using tabaco, and we should have a full bath after coming into contact with tabaco. The problem is: 1) I go uni and being veg as well my food choices are limited, is it still ok if i eat outside. I can't really eat cold food because it gets stuck in my throat easily. 2) My dad drinks alcohol, he touches the roti thing after he drinks and he also washes my clothes (I study so I don't really have that much time), sometimes he has a glass out while he handles the clean clothes, also all the dishes are washed with same sponge. If feeling really down now, if i think about it everything is touched by alcohol hands. I don't what to do, im not amritdari but still one day hope i can be gifted amrit. Now I just want to move out as soon as I get a job
  17. I know about the use of fetal cells in vaccines but this possibility that we are ingesting in our foods horrifies me . I would like to warn anyone with a delicate nature that there are pictures of people actually knowingly eating babies at the end. Ghor kalyug...
  18. Vahiguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vahiguru Ji Ki Fateh, Could someone please post in English translation and Roman transliteration the Ardas before and after eating? I'm looking for the ones that start with salok (before eating) and pauri (after eating). I know I posted this in a different thread, but I don't think anyone noticed it. I apologize for the double post. Thank you.
  19. Gurbani is clear on this - " Thora sunve thora hee khave" and " alap ahari sulabh see nidra" From my personal experience , meditation is best done on less than half of the food we normally consume. However, the big bellies punjabis have and our lavish langars clearly undermine this simple fact. Share your thoughts

    Question On Diet

First of all let me say that I don't want this to turn into an argument about meat vs vegetarian, I just want to ask a question. I turned vegetarian two months ago as I have become a lot more interested in Sikhi and used to be nastik. Anyway my family and group of friends all eat meat daily and have started to make fun of me and call me a "vashnu". When I asked them what it means they didn't explain and just kept calling it to me. People keep saying to me to eat meat and saying you're young you need to eat meat and eggs to grow. I have three questions. 1. What is a vashnu and why do they call me this. 2. Will stopping meat affect my growth and health? 3. Do eggs count as meat. What is argument behind this. Thank you to Sikh Sangat for providing a website where confused youth can ask for help.
