  1. WJKK WJKF I recently learned that when reading gurbani every letter/symbol must be pronounced exactly the way it's written (no exceptions). But why do people say that the onkar/sihari on the last letter of each word shouldn't be pronounced? http://www.gursevak.com/readsggs .. In this audio file everything is pronounced, so is this correct? WJKK WJKF
  2. To me there is no difference , yes I don't do chavar or prakash/sukhasan of my laptop but I try to read as much as I can along with translations - but in the end its the same Shabad guru - physical saroop or pdf , IMHO key is to incorporate the lessons in our day to day life - taki " halat palat mukh ujjal hoye " - we are saved in this life and hereafter. 5. Why are discussions that look at Gurbani deeper being closed? Two discussions on looking at Gurbani shabads have been closed in a matter of days. http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/73210-tesiya-dancing-before-sri-guru-granth-sahib-ji/ http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/73167-nanaksar-worshipping-photos/
  6. I have seen/heard/read many people say that religion was created by man, that all holy scriptures are manmade. These people, whether desi or angrej, their level and parameter of spirituality is, I am extremely sorry to say, neutron sized. Lets not forget that all scriptures of the major world religions were penned down much after their original orators had left this world. Only Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee was given Gurta Gaddee by Dasmesh Pita Ji Himself. Secondly, other scriptures may have stories, laws, philosophies, or whatever, but Gurbani is written in turia avastha, the 4th and highest spiritual stage which mere mortals cannot comprehend. Its like asking a 3rd grade student to study college level atomic physics of master's degree. Thirdly, Gurbani is priceless because the truth contained in Gurbani was maintained at the cost of life. Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj refused to change "musalmaan" to "beimaan". Guru Sahib refused to add any praises for any avtar/prophet/messenger in there. His Shaheedi is witness to the fact that Gurbani was/is/will always be priceless, was/is/will always be unchanged/unchangeable. Gurbani is not a set of stories or laws or philosophies. Its the divine words uttered by spiritually uplifted souls whose soul-consciousness was at the highest peak of spirituality. These divine words were so true that none of them hesitated to sacrifice their life for it. This makes Gurbani the undisputed word of Akal Purakh Vaheguru! Mehtab Singh Nov. 7th 2013

  10. Wrong Gurbani translations and ignorance are being used by several Dawah and Christian Missionary organisations. Even if not, it is our duty to understand GurShabad correctly, so lets use this thread to correct (wrong) prevalent Shabads. 141, Guru Granth Sahib Ji Wrong translation: Where is anything like 'religion of the Prophet' 'faith of Mohammad' mentioned in the original Gurbani? Actual translation (taken from SearchSikhism): It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one can become a true Muslim (by surrendering completely to the Will of Waheguru), only then he may be called one. First requirement to become a true Muslim is to love the Dharam (religion) i.e. truth. Then cleanse the mind by sharing the wealth with poor and needy. This way false pride of possessions of worldly wealth goes away. Secondly, if the Gurbani tells one to become a true Muslim then why doesn't it say to recite Kalimah, the Quran, Namaz, go on Hajj, etc ? Muslim word is being redefined just like Jati ceases being celibacy when used in Gurbani context. Please post more Shabads and try to correct them.

  14. WJKK WJKF I wanted to start a discussion on if it's wrong to have gurbani and path on our phones. I've realized that we take our phones everywhere (a lot of the time they're even in our pockets when we go to the bathroom). So would you think that it's a good idea to be carrying path on your phone? lol btw this may seem like a silly question, but I've seen this discussion come up many times between uncles at the gurdwara.
  15. WJKK WJKF In Gurbani there are alot of places where words are mentioned with an aunkar and without aunkar. For example the word Naam and Naam(u). I was able to figure out (might be incorrect) that when its Naam(u) then its hinting WaheGuru in some way. But then there is dhan and dhan(u) and Mann and Mann(u). Can someone explain how the aunkar changes the meaning of the word? Thank you!
  16. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh, Dear Sadh Sangat Ji, Thanks for helping me with my last gupt post....( Help! My Life, Naam Kamai And Gur Sikhi Prachar ) With the Grace of Guru Sahib ji , i have decided to do SEVA and help SIKHS living in Remote Areas of Rajasthan (Pakistan Border Area) India and SIKHS living along with Ghaghar River.... !!! PLEASE POST YOUR SUGGETION, COMMENTS about this Project !!! We will need Support and Fundraising help from Sikh Sangat. The Ghaghar River flows through Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar District towards Pakistan. This river is named Ghaghar River because it was use to flow like A women wearing Skirt doing Whirly dance. Water spins very fast due to whirly effect and it starts cutting the soil/ shores and many kilometres long land will suddenly get sunk into river water. Story of this Area : It is said that one day Dasven Patshah Dhan Dhan Sti Guru Gobind Singh ji was going through this area with his Sikhs. Guru ji and sikhs started to cross the Ghaghar river in Bedis and 40 Sikhs of Guru ji stuck in the Ghumangheri (swirling water), sunk, and died. This happened between two places known as Malla Tibba and Jhanda Tibba. Guru ji then gave Shrap to the Ghaghar river that - O River You will Dry one day, my Sikhs will come here, they will Rip your chest and they will do khethi ( farming) on your chest. River asked in reply Sachhe patshah when i will flow again. Guru ji said you will flow very occasionally. Since after that many Sikhs settled in this area and started doing farming Inside and along the river. I was born and grown in this area. I have seen countless number of farms ( even many villages) are actually inside the river flow area ( or between both shores of the river) When heavy rain comes in Punjab , they put excessive water into Ghaghar river ( it happens 2-3 times in every 5-7 years) and it supplies minerals and water for farming properties in the river. This area is Mini Punjab of Rajasthan. Coz it gives a big amount of crops (Wheat, Cotton, Mustard, Pulses, etc.), fruits like orange, sugar cans and other things to Whole Rajasthan. Sadly - There is NO GOVERNMENT SUPPORT to this area, no facilities, not very good hospitals, not good education, bad roads, even not enough volume of water is supplied trough Farming Canals due to Politics of Rajasthan government. This area is self developed by local people. When farmers put their seeds in their fields, government cuts down the water supply form many days to months. About Sikhs living in the Area and common issues: Most Sikhs are farmer. There is no Gur Sikhi Prachar in the Area, Most Sikhs have forgotten their real Values and going on the path of Patit Puna. Don’t ask about Young Generation. There is Theka (bottle shop) in every small village. But this area is far away from big intoxications / drugs. Killing of Unborn Daughters in Sikh Families is very common in this area. Rude culture / DAWRY system - Grooms Family asking for Meat, Chickens, Branded Wines, Car/Motorbikes, Cash and arrangements of Female Dancers is very common. Needs: There is a big need of Gur Sikhi Prachar and to develop personal links with Sikhs in the area. There is a big demand for a good Hospital. Closet good hospital with emergency facilities PMB (prince bijaysingh memorial) hospital, Bikaner. Which is 163kms away from Gharsana, 186kms from Anupgarh. Distance calcution Source: http://www.distances...sana/164793/r3/ Sikh Awareness. Our project (currently on rough paper) : Stage #1 1. Starting a Good Hospital: Mothers & chalderns - priority Emergency facilities - priority Aged and Youth - secondary 2. Guru Ghar and Gurmat Prachar center: Organizing Gurmat Samagams and Amrit sanchars Build a team and organize personal link with Sikhs in area( hear problems and seek solutions) Preparing teams tyar bartyar Young Gur Sikhs for prachar Preparing Gur Sikhs to help in project Sikh Awareness – against Pakhandi Saaadhs/gurus, against intoxications, Sikh school & Taksaal ( inside Guru Ghar) for Gurmat Education, Santhya and kiratan learning for FREE Stage #2 3. Gurmat FM Radio Station: a. Setup a Gurmat FM Radio Station b. Broadcasting Gurbani, Kiratan , Katha and Katha done by Giani Thakur Singh ji ( DDT) and / or similar level katha to preach the message and values given by Guru ji c. distribute free FM radio receivers ( pre programed to receive only Gurmat Radio ) d. Sikh Awareness 4. Scheduled Monthly Samagams: Helping poor Sikh families and organizing Sikh marriage samagams Inviting various Raagi/keertani Jathas, Pracharks/kathavachaks , Dhadhi Jathas in every Samagam Amrit Sanchar & Naam Kamai, Gurmat Smagams Akhand Paaths of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Stage #3 5. Helping locals facing Water and Irrigation problems: Helping locals by Organizing Underground Water bore wells. For areas with Salty and Undrinkable water : Organizing Free Akhand Paaths and or Sri Sukhamni Sahibs, doing Ardaas and then arranging Underground Water bore wells . 6. Free Surgery Camps: Free Surgeries such as Eye, Dental, etc... Camps. Location: Location will be either Gharsana or Anupgarh or in between (Sri Ganganagar District, Rajasthan, India) Covered Area: (Sri Ganganagar District) Gharsana and rural Anupgarah and rural Ramsingh pur Sri Vijaynagar and villages around Suratgarh and villages around Raisingh nagar and rural Padampur and surrounding area Some areas of Chhatargarh (Bikaner District) Cost: Approximate: US $ 450,000 Sources of Donation: Sikh sangat of USA, CANADA, UK, AUSTRALIA Local Sikh sangat Online donations (for hospital) Crowd funding DDT Money collected trough personal links, Gurmat samagam Special: There is good prasang I cant remember which Paatsahi ( i think Patsahi 6) had a group of 1000 Sikhs. Whenever a Sikh wanted to build a house , Guru ji and sadh sangat will go to that Sikh's house and sadh sangat will give him 1 rupee and 1 brick , thus that Sikh will have 1000 Rupees and 1000 bricks to build his house. So please help ! Send your comments, suggetions about this project. Tell us how we can improve and fundraise. 17. Why do all kirtanis and jathas pronounce "Deh Siva" as "Deh Shiva"? Can someone further explain the meaning of Siva? Is it a synonym for Shiva, if so isn't it still incorrect to pronounce it as shiva rather than siva?
  18. couple of years ago good friend of mine (who is also occasional forum member) told me different meaning of this tuk (#2). 1. Manas ki jaaat sahbi eko pehanchiyo Equality - Treat All Equal 2. 21. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Saad Sangat Ji I am writing a paper about Sikhism for my University class. I had used a Gurbani Tuk from Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and I'm struggling with how to properly cite Guru Sahib in apa format. Maybe I can cite a website instead like searchgurbani.com or srigranth.org Could someone help me with this? Dhanvaad
  22. Fateh I am looking for the following: Nanak Jor Gobind Ka Puran Guntas (Or on very similar lines) No results from Sikhitothemax and srigranth.org. Can you help identifying where this is quoted from? Fateh
  23. Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh Can Gursikhs please do vichaar on the Panj Kalishas? These are the five causes of worry/distress. Not sure if that's the right word. Yes, I'm feeling low. They are Avididha, Raag, Dvaikh, Asaamita and Abhinivesh. What are they and how can we over come them? What are some practical steps? *To the Gurmukhs who will come and post do abhiyaas (you're one hundred percent right) many thanks for your contribution but looking to explore these Panj Kalishas from both a spiritual and academic angle* Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh
  24. I've come across some wrong translations of Gurbani on apps such as Gurbani anywhere and also on the website searchgurbai.com - From what I understand they all use the same translations as the same mistakes are on a lot of different apps etc. This is unnaceptable and such applications which portray Gurbani in such a way should not be available. I'm going to display 2 examples of worrying mistakes that I have come across recently. Example #1 http://searchgurbani.com/guru_granth_sahib/shabad/3260/line/2 (You just have to read the translations for a few tuks and it becomes clear what i'm on about) Example #2 (A more dangerous example as this is changing Gurbani itself) On the android Gurbani Search app if you search for this shabad : http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=10073 It changes a word on the 2nd tuk. Instead of Gur Simar, it changes it to Gur Daas. This needs to be checked out, all the Gurbani displayed on apps made available to the public need to be reviewed by 2-3 panthic bodies who take their time to check the Gurbani and make sure its translations and the Bani itself is accurate. If you pay attention to the first example, that seems pretty deliberate. I'm sure many others have had similar experiences, would be great if you could also contribute and hopefully somebody who is in touch with the people who put such Gurbani sources out there can get this looked at.
