  2. VJKK VJKF There are two quotes that I once heard; I can't seem to remember them or find them. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great: 1) A quote about Guru Nanak Dev Ji being a lion and roaring, I recall that the word Singh is used to describe Guru Nanak Dev Ji. 2) A quite about how is doesn't matter if a Sikh is in a Mosque or Mandir or any other place of worship as long as he has Waheguru inside of him he cannot be affected by anything, or words to that affect. I'm aware that this is a rather obscure post but, they have been on my mind so if Sangat could shed any light that would be great! Bhul Chuk Maaf VJKK VJKF
  3. On 8th March, world celebrates women's day. Sikh faith was among the first major world religions to imply that women were equals to men. Guru Nanak proclaimed the equality of men and women and all Guru Sahiban allowed women to take full part in all the activities of Sikh worship and practice. 4. Today i was reading topics like sri sukhmani sahib ji for 40 days, millionaire mantra etc in gupt section. SHOCKED!!!! People want to get things..yes they are right but by only reciting while having love for akaal purakh...& not like its secret formula for this..for that... Do like this like that with that..again i read 1 q. Saying can i do paath without covering my head in office...& some like can i be rich thru this.. Some people who believe in im manglik & want my lost love..what!!??!! People do vehem param sometimes little...but what finding love .....?!?! Doing paath to remember almighty before doing anything is ok..in very difficult situation is ok ...in thanking is ok..doing ardaas is ok..to get success is ok...but only with god's love..one more i read was " guru ji always gave me.whenever i did ardaas(ok..good) but this time i wanted to have baby boy..so i did ardaas..but in ultra scan baby is a girl...guru ji didnt answer my ardaas but i know guru ji has never refused me ..so he now meant what to do next.. i mean what!!?!.. This is wrong ... I myself is maha paapi person to be honest...i dont have any right to point finger at something... But every1 must know that this is not right... i remember --- " tuk dam krari jo karo hazar hazoor khudaye" when with just one breath of reciting waheguru ji strongly & deep in love ..waheguru ji will be present in front us...( plz i beg correct me if im wrong) Then why this.. how to tell people about this in a right way? Ur views this is right or wrong? What about sharda puran granth? I remember n30singh saying its like luring kid at first with candy then to make it a habit & them making it right( i think he is right ..but its diff. To understand and its human nature for getting things they want but more & more,so they will never stop for this & never be on right track(to recite gurbani to be one with akaal purakh waheguru ji)) Also... Jotan jgaya karo shaheedan sahib te chupahere dya karo har aetwar.,sukh lo ehne paath ..fir jo mango milega ...ok thats right but where is the love, there is only greed, then shukrana after getting success, then ok lets get to back to normal life..( even i do such things ..its human nature....but i try to control whenever i remember what i am doing is wrong..as said i am maha papi) Waheguru ji is kirre nu muaf karna ji ... I accept what i did was wrong & and i.will try my best to finish my greed ..( no haume ji..muafi ji..) But in topics i mentioned its way too different... what u say? Note -- i wrote so that ever1 including me must not do wrong..( i will try my best .. to solve it) Imp-- what i want to convey is that there's a line b/w getting things with greed and getting things with love..& asking for things which r right & not blindly) ..also understand gurbani ji ( koi galti ta muafi ji) GURU KIRPA KARN JI! UPPAR JO LIKHYA HAI OH BAHUT OKHA HAI LIKHNA,SAMAJNA,TE BAHUT VIVADIT VI HO SAKDA HAI...I TRIED MY BEST IT TO BE.NEUTRAL.. BHULAN DI KHIMA JI! WAHEGURU MUAF KARN JI SAB TE MEHR PARYA HATH RAKHN JI SARYAN NU SMAT BHAKSHNA JI WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA! WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH! SRI AKAAL SAHAI! ( plz read all)

  6. Recently I received a New Years greeting card through the post from my local Gurdwara. Inside and outside of the card contained Gurbani. For those of you that may not be aware, any Gurbani that is written down whether it be a piece of paper or a greeting card needs to be treated with the same respect you would have for a Gutka Sahib. Would you ever put your Gutka Sahib on the floor? The organisation that printed the card is called Sikh Missionary Society. I contacted them on the phone and to be frank the gentleman I spoke to didn’t seem to understand the beadbi that’s happening or seem too bothered about it. Their reply was we’ve been doing it for twenty years and then went on to say they print Gurbani everywhere. In the end he told me to write to them. Below I have included the email I sent them and I urge every single one of you to get in touch with them to ensure no further disrespect continues towards our Guru. Feel free to copy this letter or write your own but please contact them if you can. The more of us that do will increase the chances of putting a stop to this. Sikh Missionary Society 8-10 Featherstone Road Southall, Middlesex UB2 5AA Email: info@sikhmissionarysociety.org Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, I'm writing to you in regards to the New Years greeting cards that are printed by your organisation. I received a card recently which had Guru Gobind Singh's Gurbani printed inside and Guru Nanak's Bani on the front. Once these cards have been printed and are sent to the postal service they are going to be handled without any respect for the Gurbani inside and ultimately end up on the floor of each recipient when they are posted. To have any material which contains Gurbani on the floor or mishandled is gravely disrespecting our Guru. I would also like to point out that these cards will most likely be placed in a drawer after the holiday season and again there is no guarantee that the recipient will treat them appropriately. I appreciate you would like to spread the message of Gurbani and share it's beautiful message and this can still be done. I propose that you use a Romanised version to write the transliteration of Gurbani with the english meanings. That way the message of Gurbani will still be received and there will no beadbi of our Gurbani. I look forward to hearing from you.
  7. When Ram Rai, the eldest son of Mata Krishen Kaur and Guru Har Rai Ji, changed a word of a Gurbani tukh to appease (the usurper of the Mughal Raj) Arungzeb, Guru Har Rai Ji excommunicated him from Sikhi. Baba Ram Rai was Guru Sahib’s own son yet he had disrespected Gurbani which is considered the highest form of direspect in the Sikh Faith. Baani Guru, Guru Hai Baani. BUT we forget one important thing, Baba Ram Rai was punished so severely because he KNOWINGLY did the wrong thing. Being Guru Sahib’s son he was well aware of the crime he was committing and therefore it was a choice. Sadly majority of our community today is ignorant of our faith and it’s history. So how then can we hold individuals responsible when they disrespect Gurbani and thereby the True Guru unknowingly? Our response must be different because the Guru is just and never angry toward those who commit a mistake unknowingly. It is counterproductive to curse the bride and say “she deserves to rot in hell” or that “she is a stupid <banned word filter activated> who should die”. This only perpetuates ignorance and division within our community. We must as a community take responsibility and educate ourselves and others to make sure incidents like this never occur again. As for incidents regarding to Anand Karaj, Anand Karaj is a very big commitment that we have dumbed down to “the Punjabi Marriage Ceremony” and by doing so we have turned it into a ritual, something often the bride and groom do without true knowledge. The Anand Karaj is a commitment ceremony that binds the souls of the couple, you are not only committing to each other but making the HUGE commitment of accepting Guru Sahib as your Guru, to follow “his” teachings and keep “him” in the center of your new married life. Each part of the Lavaan gives you a different teaching which you hear out while you revolve around the Guru like the earth revolves around the sun and you commit to that teaching, saying you fully agree with it and will embody it the moment you bow your head before the Guru and Matha Tek. The “pheray” or parkarma around Guru Granth Sahib was not always part of the ceremony, it was added and is merely mirroring your commitment. The palla shows the connecting of two souls, you walk around Guru Sahib to show “he” is the center of your life. The reason walking side by side doesn’t work is because you both will not be equidistance from Guru Sahib, one person will be further. The woman walking behind the man is not inequality because it simply mirrors a Gurbani tukh. Also in the greater context of Anand Karaj one can see inequality is not an issue. As I stated before, we are viewing our religion through a western perspective without the knowledge and historical context of our religion. Furthermore, another way to look at in a western perspective is “Behind every man is a strong woman…and boom now it’s liberating. I would like to state once again that ignorance is the root of all the confusion and division in our community. If it pains you to see Guru Granth Sahib disrespected then take it upon yourself to educate others of Gurbani and Sikh History. Do your research so you can know about the faith and institution you claim to be a part of. I would like to end this by saying once again, disrespect to Gurbani and thereby the true Guru is the highest crime. I will leave you with one other example of how much respect our Gurus had for Gurbani. They were always stating that they are nothing, Gurbani, the word of Waheguru is everything, worship and follow Gurbani not their physical forms. Baani Guru, Guru Hai Baani. When Guru Arjun Dev Ji, the 5th Guru was bringing Aad Granth (half of Guru Granth Sahib organized into a saroop) to Amritsar, Baba Buddha ji carried Aad Granth on his head while Guru Arjun Dev Ji did chaur seva (waving of peacock feathers). This shocked the sangat that was walking alongside Guru Sahib because chaur seva was something that was only done to the Guru or to Kings and yet here was the Guru doing chaur seva to what appeared to be a book! Then when they ended the daily events at Amritsar, the Sikhs asked Guru Arjun Dev Ji where they should put Aad Granth for the night. Guru Sahib responded, Aad Granth will rest on my bed, I will sleep on the floor beside it. OUR GURUS SHOWED TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT GURBANI IS THE HIGHEST. Today we have largely forgotten this and disregard Guru Granth Sahib, we neglect our Guru by remaining ignorant of “his” teachings. Facebook: www.facebook.com/torontosinghs Twitter: www.twitter.com/SinghsCampTO Instagram: www.instagram.com/torontosinghscamp YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/SinghsCampTO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is a great article written by a Singh from Toronto that we would like to share with everyone: -------------------------------- Siri Jap jee Sahib – Importance of Amritvela In the 4th pauri of Siri Jap jee Sahib, the following 4 pankitis are of great significance as far as Amritvela is concerned: From the first two pankitis (of this pauri) we find out that all that we have is from Vaheguru. Since, everything is from Vaheguru, then, what is it that we can present to Vaheguru so that we may be able to behold his Darbar (court)? Continuing on from the previous pankiti, Siri Guru jee asks second question, “what should be uttered from the mouth, hearing which, he may shower his love on us.” This pankiti proves that there is such a word, by the uttering of which, he showers us with love. We all know that this word is Naam-Gurmantra. The response to the questions in the 2 previous pankitis is most magnificent. Siri Guru jee says that in order to view his darbaar and to get his love, one must have Amritvela, Sacha Naam (true Naam) and contemplation of his qualities (through Gurbani). In other words, one must possess Amritvela i.e. get up early in the morning and do chanting of Sach Naam and do contemplation of his qualities through Gurbani When one does what is mentioned in the previous pankiti, then through his grace (karmi, kirpa naal) one receives the cloth or robe of honour (siropa) and by his kirpa (nadree) one receives Mokh-duaar (doorway of salvation). Some scholars have interpreted the word “ਕਪੜਾ” as the human form but the problem in doing these meanings is that the flow that is continuing from previous pankitis is lost. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee, Giani Bachan Singh Faridkoti, Professor Sahib Singh and many other scholars have interpreted this word as robe of honour (siropa). From the above vichaar, it is clear that the way to achieve salvation and grace of Vaheguru is to have Amritvela Naam Abhyaas. What is Amritvela? Amritvela is the last pehar (3 hours or so) of the night, which is highly productive time for Naam Japna. The whole world is sleeping and Gursikhs find this time very peaceful to concentrate on Naam and contemplate on the qualities of Vaheguru listed in Gurbani. Gurmukhs who have reached high spiritual states say that at this time there is a shower or rainfall of Amrit. For this reason, one can effortlessly concentrate on Naam and achieve the spiritual aim much faster. The nights become long and short at different times of the year. For this reason many Gursikhs stick to one time to get up year around. If a Gursikh gets up around 2am, it is the most suitable time. Some Gursikhs get up even at 11:30 pm and get ready at 12 am to japp Naam. While one must commend this effort of these Gursikhs but reading history we find out that most Gursikhs used to get up around 2am or be ready for Simran at 2am. More References from Gurbani The effort of getting up at Amritvela has been ordained by Guru Sahib in Gurbani. Presented below are some pankitis that give us hukam to get up early morning: The alert ones who are seekers of Vaheguru, with great enthusiasm get up by the 4th part of the night. Their friendship is with rivers (where they take shower i.e. do ishnaan) and in their mouth and mind is the true Naam. Baba Farid jee in his baani stated above, is making it clear that ones who don’t get up at the last part of the night are spiritually dead people. Siri Guru Arjun Dev jee Maharaj in Maaroo Dakhne (above) state that O Gursikh, if you chant the Naam at early morning and this way contemplate on the Charan of Guru, and sing the praises of Vaheguru, your dirt of birth and death (many life forms) will be erased. ॥ Translation: There are fortunate ones, who at the time of early morning take shower (do Ishnaan) and then read, hear and sing Gurbani and Naam. After taking shower at early morning with pure heart they do worshipping of Vaheguru with full methodology. The body becomes gold like by touching the Paaras of Naam and by concentrating on Jyot Roopi (spirit form) Vaheguru. Babeeha is a bird that can drink water only from rainfall. Even if there is ocean full of water, this bird cannot use this water to quench its thirst. It has to rely on rain water. When this bird gets thirsty, it cries in such mercy-invoking way that it melts the heart of who ever hears it. Vaheguru too is prompted to send rainfall to quench the thirst of this bird. When the Gursikh roopi Babeeha cries out (chants Naam with love) at amritvela, only then his cries or requests are heard by Vaheguru. This pankiti makes it clear that unless we do Amritvela, our cries and requests are not heard by Vaheguru. Amritvela is important for a Gursikh because it is the hukam of Guru Sahib to get up early and engage in Naam Abhyaas. Gurbani goes as far as saying that those who don’t get up early morning are spiritually dead. Please refer to the aforementioned Gurbani Pankitis for detail on this. What to do at Amritvela? ਮ: 4 ॥ 2॥ As per the famous salok of Siri Guru Ramdaas jee Maharaj, listed above, the following should be done at Amritvela: 1) Recitation of Naam as soon as one gets up. 2) Gurmat Ishnaan of whole of the body including the hair. While doing Ishnaan one must do paath of Gurbani, Mool Mantra or Naam Abhyaas. 3) Nitnem of 5 Baanis should begin after Ishnaan is done and not while doing Ishnaan. 4) Nitnem of 5 baanis is of utmost importance and should be done at amritvela. 5) Naam Abhyaas can be done alone too but to have maximum benefit, it should be done along with Siri Sukhmani Sahib (reference from Bhai Sahib’s writing coming later in this article). 6) After concluding Naam Abhyaas, one should go to Gurdwara Sahib or where ever one can have darshan of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee and do kirtan of Siri Asa kee Vaar. The amritvela should conclude with Siri Asa kee Vaar and if possible with Karah Parshad. 7) Then during the day, doing all tasks, one should continue doing Naam Abhyaas. 8) Such Gursikh who does Naam Abhyaas all the time through every breath is very dear to Guru Sahib. Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee's views on Amritvela With reference to the above Salok, Bhai Sahib has written the following: Loose Translation: The everyday activity of a true Bibeki Sikh of Satguru is get up in the morning and meditate on Naam according to the Gurmat methodology (Vidhi Poorbak). From the second verse of this Salok, the starting of the methodology of Naam Abhyaas is described. A Gursikh should get up very early in the morning and take shower and while taking shower, he should chant the Amrit Baani and this way do Ishnaan in the Sarovar (pond) of Amritsar. Then while doing the paath of Nitnem (prescribed 5 baanis), he should do Naam Abhyaas and as a result of this doing, all sins get washed away. Then at sunrise, as per the hukam “ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੰਮਾਲੇਹੁ”, while doing darshan of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee, he should recite or sing Gurbani with sweet voice. Then while doing all works during the day, he should continue to recite Naam with every breath. Bhai Sahib writes that there comes an avastha while reciting Naam, when one’s concentration just becomes dull and one cannot derive pleasure or rass from Naam Abhyaas. To avoid this Bhai Sahib has written that, it is a good idea to do Naam Abhyaas and Gurbani Paath together. Bhai Sahib has written the following with respect to this: Loose Translation: The best way to be saved from this (avoid dull concentration) is to do Naam Abhyaas and Gurbani Paath together. And especially to do Abhyaas (recitation with love) of Siri Sukhmani Sahib along with Naam Abhyaas is extremely beneficial. Using the whip or lash of love of the beloved one (whose Naam we chant), Gurbani keeps one alert towards Naam Abhyaas and by praising the greatness of Naam again and again, it increases the love of Naam in the mind of the seeker. This love is the way to get concentration. This love alone is the medicine that takes one’s concentration high. And this love alone is the medicine to kill thoughts or bad thoughts (that keep coming in mind when one tries to concentrate). What else to say, this love alone is the greatest way to do Naam Abhyaas. Some Inspirational Stories or Sayings by Mahapurakhs Baba Sham Singh jee at a very early age of 5 years started living with a Baba Raam Singh jee. His father had died and his mother could not feed him. For this reason she came to Baba Raam Singh jee and urged him to accept Baba Sham Singh jee. Baba Sham Singh had a remarkable inclination towards doing Bhagti, at such early age. He developed so much love for sangat that he refused to go back with his mother. Once when Baba Sham Singh was only 6 or 7 years old, he became a little relaxed in getting up at Amritvela and missed Amritvela for 2 days in a row. At this Baba Raam Singh told one of his sewadaar to take Baba Sham Singh and drop him off to his mother. When Baba Sham Singh heard this, he was horrified. He could not imagine going away from sangat and this way, lose spirituality. He started crying. The sewadar lovingly told him to seek forgiveness from Sant jee. Baba Sham Singh prostrated before Sant jee and earnestly sought forgiveness for not getting up early morning. At this Sant jee forgave him and told him that if a person loses Amritvela, then there is nothing left in that person. He said if he (Baba Sham Singh) was not going to keep Amritvela in his sangat, he (Baba Raam Singh) too will have some burden of the sin incurred with this, since he is responsible for him. After this, Baba Sham Singh jee never lost Amritvela. He lived for 115 more years, after this incident. Another Singh while describing the importance of Amritvela used to say that Siri Guru Kalgidhar jee himself takes attendance of who get up at Amritvela. If a person misses Amritvela, he marks them absent but if a person regularly misses Amritvela, Guru Sahib just strikes off his name from the list. This is a very scary thought. If Guru Sahib was to strike off our name from his list of Gursikhs he monitors, what would happen of us? We would just die. Some Tips for getting up at Amritvela 1) Let’s face it. We are not Brahmgyanis. So we should not try to imitate them either. Brahmgyanis may sleep (in so called sleep too they japp Naam) at midnight and still get up an hour or two hours later. But we are mortal beings. We must sleep early if we want to get up early. 2) One may sleep late and still get up early for 1 day, 2 days, 3 days or even a week but eventually he will be fatigued and sooner or later will lose or miss Amritvela. 3) A normal person needs at least 5-6 hours of sleep. If one wants to get up at 2am, then one must strive to sleep at 8pm. 4) Another thing to note is that if we sleep well at night, there is much more energy to japp Naam at Amritvela and concentration is much deeper. 5) If one is to sleep at 8pm, one must eat dinner by 6pm and then walk a little after eating. If one takes dinner at 9pm and sleep at 10-11, it is much harder to get up at Amritvela. As per experience of many Gursikhs heavy dinner, late at night, is an impediment in getting up early. 6) Do Kirtan Sohila with full concentration and do ardaas before Guru Sahib for Amritvela. 7) Before sleeping, one should try to concentrate on Naam Abhyaas or repeatedly do short Gurbani paaths like Ramkali kee Vaar and Basant kee Vaar. 8) At Amritvela, one should strive to do Ishnaan with cold water. This helps in concentration. Despite all the efforts and tricks, we must realize that Amritvela after all is a gift of Vaheguru. For this reason, the foremost thing to do is to supplicate and beg before Guru Sahib for this gift. If Guru Sahib beholds us with the eye of grace, then Amritvela is done effortlessly. 12. WJKK WJKF, I am 14 years old, trying to become a real Sikh. I just wanted to know how other Gursikhs spend their day on Sikhi, such as the time they wake up and the banis they do and when they sleep and everything that happens in your day. I just wanted to see if I can model it. Please also provide the times, so that I know how much time it takes for each part of the schedule. Bul Chuk Maaf Kareo. Thank you very much.
  13. Hello, I wanted to ask how exactly does Nitnem change you? I used to feel something when I did paht, but now I don't feel like I have that experience anymore, I'm feeling discouraged.
  14. WJKK WJKF, I want to become a granthi and serve my guru but I don't know how to. I don't read fluent gurmukhi, sometimes skip nitnem, and don't know a lot of gurbani. I live in US and don't have kesh. I don't know kirtan. I don't go to any gurudwara Punjabi school and I cant go. What can I do to become one. Please help me. I really need it.
  15. I have a few questions regarding Gurbani i.e. specifically the Bani of the Bhagats or Bhagat Bani. 1.) As per Gurbani who is a Bhagat and who is a Guru? 2.) How do both inter-relate? 3.) Was Bhagat Bani edited by the Gurus? If so how and why? 4.) What criterion do the Bhagat's set for a Guru and vice versa? 5.) Why and how did Guru Nanak Dev Ji select the 15 Bhagats whose compositions we revere? 6.) Chronologically when did these Bhagats reside in relation to the Gurus? 7.) In light of both Bhagat Bani (and Guru-Bani) are we given to understand that the following statement holds coin in Sikhi? 'Sikh Dharma was always there in the form of "Sanataan Dharma" or the ever-existent faith. As per the times, Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his successors initiated revolutionary changes.' -S.J.S Pall. 8.) How did Purataan sampradas co-relate with the apostles of the Bhagats? 9.) How embellished are the Janamsaakhis which relate meetings between the Gurus and the Bhagats despite substantive chronological variations?

  17. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, I have a couple of dictionaries and recently got a book on Gurbani grammar from Sikh Research Institute. But I cannot seem to find a good dictionary in English to help translate the words used in Gurbani. Does anyone know of a good dictionary to help with my reading? I prefer to read the Gurmukhi instead of the English translations that are available, but I just still need help with a lot of the words. Thanks!
  18. Do we let other individuals influence our perception and understanding of Gurbani? I was recently researching Chibber's Bansavalinamah and several elements spoke out to me. 1.) It is via the Bansavalinamah that many Sikh scholars and academicians craft their principle understanding of Dasam Bani, Chandi and Uggardanti but: a.) Chibber is openly hostile to non-Brahmins and decries Gurmat's annihilation of the Vedic caste system. b.) The manifestation of the devi myth is found only in his text and none other. It is important to remember that he was writing in 1769 A.D. whereas Sainapati and other Kavis wrote their accounts in or around 1711 A.D. c.) Chibber blatantly ignores many Gurmat principles whilst attempting to appease his Brahminism. d.) His work is almost a campaign against Brahmins losing their historic prowess. In light of the latter is it really possible to base our perceptions and understanding of Dasam Bani, Chandi and Uggardanti on his words? How many other such politically or socially oriented authors/individuals have construed our modern day understanding of Gurbani and have they had a positive effect on the latter?

  24. This is a question for all the sikhs including myself are we really sikhs or just known to be sikhs. How is our relation going on with god? Do we meditate on GOD? OR WE are stuck in getting a different nation? Does every sikh understands Gurbani? Why do sikhs don't respect other religions? Whereas GURU sahib respected every religion.
