  1. Hi As per hukamnama by guru sahib we are looking for name of our baby boy starting from J we have names Jefraj, Jaisamar but we are looking for a unique name can someone please help us in finding one
  2. In Gurbani, a woman who becomes the “sohagan” has been referred to as “batees sulakhani” means she has thirty-two qualities, which according to Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha are:- beauty, cleanliness, modesty, humility, concord, observance of religion, intelligence, knowledge, service, compassion, truth, dedicated love of spouse, purity of mind, patience, frugality, beneficence, sobriety, chivalry, active habits, house decoration, respect of elders, proficiency in music, poetry, painting, domestic science and embroidery, respectful attention to guests, and bringing up children. Gurbani enunciates that there is not any difference between the Man and woman. All men and women can be “Sohagan if they have the qualities necessary to please the Lord.

I never read The Guru myself so I am quite unaware as to what these numbers mean. Are they to denote the chords on an instrument or pitches of the voice? Can anyone help? Thank you!

    Fourteen world shops

You Yourself created the earth, and the two lamps of the sun and the moon. You created the fourteen world-shops, in which Your Business is transacted. The Lord bestows His Profits on those who become Gurmukh. The Messenger of Death does not touch those who drink in the True Ambrosial Nectar. They themselves are saved, along with their family, and all those who follow them are saved as well. ||3|| what are the fourteen world shops here and what does it mean.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji - 4 Sins

Chaarae Kilavikh Oun Agh Keeeae Hoaa Asur Sanghaar || If you have committed the four great sins and other mistakes; even if you are a murderous fiend does anyone know what is meant by the 4 great sins. it makes me think of the bujjar kurehit...is it something similar? the line is by Guru Arjan Dev Ji on Ang 70 if you want to go look at the full shabad.
  12. This is not about personal opinions but obtaining different Shabads from Gurbani to see what the Guru says about Islam?
  13. there's lots of strife in my family nowadays. Even despite just me , mom and dad. I think we're seeing almost daily quarrels over some or the other issue
  14. Is it alright to quote Gurbani to answer a question, I see scholars do it all the time, but these words can have different interpretations, and at the end of the day, its poetry, and is not a direct instruction, if you know what I mean?
  15. I don't know if its just me , its quite a paradox. The recurring theme of SGGS is that meditate on god , your family members aren't with you really ! I know this is elevating but at the same time the "temporary-ness" of everything is making me feel a bit sick the more I try to realize it . I guess it comes from the fact that we're used to living in a bubble of temporary world and take it for granted as permanent . However considering my parents getting older and I don't really "love" my wife, I feel more lonely . And despite SGGS saying that ultimately god is the only companion and not your family members, it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable that my parents probably won't be with me in a decade or more .
  16. wjkk wjkf, I want to know does anyone had experience with getting pregnancy / baby when doctors daid its not possible and couple did naam /simran / gurbani and they got baby. I want to know its really possible with naam /simran now a days. This happend in Guru sahib time but i want to know anyone did themselves. I now feel that if something is not in your Paralabadh / Karms then its not possible does not matter how much naam /simran person does
  17. Often we refute that Hari , Raam and litany of sanskrit names for the divinity is actually referring to Parbrahm or waheguru ji . Agreed these are all names of Parbrahm even in some interpretatons of hindu scriptures. But how do we explain these shabads from SGGS itself , that almost seemingly are in adoration of either vishnu or krishna. (Lets keep the politics or RSS out of this one for the sake of this argument ) expecting a purely spiritual discussion ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਕੀ माली गउड़ा बाणी भगत नामदेव जी की Mālī ga▫uṛā baṇī bẖagaṯ Nāmḏev jī kī Maalee Gauraa, The Word Of Devotee Naam Dayv Jee: ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ Ik▫oaʼnkār saṯgur parsāḏ. 18. Why is marriage between two different 'castes' within Punjabi Sikhs such a big deal? As Sikhs we aren't 'supposed' to put such a big weight on our ancestory/lineage/ (whatever you want to call it) during our normal day to day lives let alone marriage. But from the sangat of Punjabis around me, it isn't uncommon to hear conversations about how low castes are like this and that and high castes are like that and this. I've even heard people say they'd rather have their child marry out of race (culturally and religiously) than marry someone from a lower caste than them. (*Enter the 'Dafuq' meme here lol). So why is there such a big stigma against intercaste related marriages?

  20. There are discussions going on in some threads at the moment about whether Sheikh Farid ji was a Muslim. I would like to hold these discussions in one place, partially because they are extraneous to the thread titles in those other threads, and we should let those threads discuss the specific items that the thread creators wanted to originally discuss: http://sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/80863-human-rights-in-islam/ http://sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/80838-why-muslims-should-never-be-trusted/ I propose that Sheikh Farid ji was not a Muslim at then end, whatever he may have been at some time. I started off with: S4NGH then responded with And I followed up with:

  25. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa. Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Often times I hear people say "SGGSJ doesnt say (insert topic) so it must be ok", and in the case of pre-marital sexual relations a dear friend of mine has made the same argument. My friend (non khalsa) argues that Bani specifically condemns rape, adultery, and polygamy, however isnt against sex outside of marriage, provided that both are not married to anyone, and have given consent. My friend likes to disregard anything outside SGGSJ. He brings up tuks from Gurbani that specifically mention "others wives" to support the argument that its specifically about adultery, however I would argue, the English translation is very shallow, and in the context of Bani, "others wives" is also talking about anyone who isnt your wife, and isnt limited to adultery, but also anyone who isnt married. Par Thria Roop N Paekhai Naethr || ਪਰ means other ਤ੍ਰਿਅ means wife Example 2: Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 1013 ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ Abandoning his own wife, he is engrossed in sexual desire; his thoughts are on the wives of others. Context: Its not just talking just about adultery, the English translations are limiting, generally the concept is to not covet another wife, in the context of Bani, doesn't mean you can have sexual relations with women who are not married. Our rehat and history make it clear that one cannot have any sexual relations outside of marriage. There is a specific reason the Guru had 10 forms over 200 years, it was to show Sikhs how to live and practically apply Bani, otherwise the SGGSJ would have been all compiled by Guru Nanak and there would be no long history of the Guru in his many forms. The SGGSJ isnt a rule book, and isnt going to specifically ban everything that we know is immoral. Where in SGGS Ji does it say that Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was the 7th Guru Sahib after Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji? Why would a primary Sikh text not name him? In terms of Gurbani, when taken into context, and even compared to rehat and our history, its clear that sexual relations outside of marriage are discouraged. Do you agree with my argument? These are just a few tuks I decided to bring up, if anyone has any more, please feel free to share!
