I'm staying in India for two months.
  2. 1. Aggressive society Passive-aggressive in the south; hostile in the north. This upsets people. You can sense it on the roads, in shops, in cinemas, in offices. And definitely in places that sell liquor. Indians who have spent time even briefly in the West are able to sense the offensive nature of India better. Non-Indians are plain shocked. Any interaction with Indians can get violent within moments. The aggression is mostly verbal, but just as bad as physical hostility.This makes people want to leave and never return. 2. Unchanging politics There are six national parties on the Election Commissions roster, 54 state parties and 1,392 registered unrecognised parties. There are 39 parties with members in the Lok Sabha, 29 in the Rajya Sabha [mostly the same as in Lok Sabha]. Yet, when you try to reach the parties with a problem, its remarkably the same everywhere. They all have a jaded air. They all think they know more. They all jump to it when youre willing to fund the party. The narrowness of Indian political parties is like a sledgehammer blow when you actually face it. It drives people away. 3. Anti-everything families Such attitude is passed down from generations. Families could be anti-womens progress, anti-Muslim, anti-Christian, anti-Hindu, anti-meat eaters, anti-free thinkers, anti-anything. The first chance youngsters get in such families, they leave. Mostly on grounds of further study. Few return after they complete their course. In Andhra Pradesh, for instance, every family with means will boast of people living in the West. Curiously, many of them return to family prejudices when in India. 4. Timid governments It is astonishing how deeply this affects Indians. The tame nature of Indian governments seems to rob them of self-esteem. It is often the first thing that comes up in conversations with friends and family living outside India. Governments barring those of Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi have done so little in India that even minor routine administrative decisions appear to be important. This creates a sense that anything goes in India. It makes people defensive and they see no hope. Consequently, many Indians rush to leave. Living outside India makes them grateful for being able to leave the country. 5. Inert justice All else being equal, this is the killer. In mid-2010, there were 32,127,796 cases pending in Indian courts [supreme Court, high courts and lower together]. Indians who have had to be in court seem lacerated by the experience. It creates a conviction that India is an unjust nation. This is enough for people to seek citizenship of other nations. Indians living in the West, principally the UK and the US, speak of how they can trust the system there. Indians in India cant. 6. Inferior intellect Most effort seems centred on keeping backwardness alive. For instance, governments routinely identify communities by their backwardness and keep them that way. Ideas are rare. Even those that merely try to be awake are bludgeoned. For instance, the crafty proposition that corruption is fine because it is a leveller. This is like saying addiction is all right because it brings the wealthy and the wretched together. Instead of trashing the thought, the person saying so was targeted. Also, the three girls who sang in Jammu & Kashmir were not a rock band. Far from it. They were merely holding guitars and singing. That doesnt make anyone a rock band but it was enough to trigger backlash. The simple truth that drives Indians out: Peddlers abound in India; not thinkers. 7. Scary schools This is one of the top three worries of India. Schools and teachers employed by them seem to be seriously short on integrity and skill. It makes parents so fearful that theyd rather leave than risk disaster in India. Those that stay behind, students and teachers, rarely have attractive qualities. Its so bad that diplomats of other nations posted in India almost never educate their children in any Indian school. Progress, if any, comes purely from individual industry. Like the auto drivers daughter in Mumbai who topped the all-India chartered accountancy exam weeks ago. Fact: No Indian university is in the worlds top 200. So they leave. 8. Yearning youth Even worse than the level of education is the fate of youngsters who come through the system. Hope and enthusiasm pull them through, but once they start looking for jobs, it hits them. Management students work at call centres, engineering graduates slog it out in IT jobs, and IT behemoths mostly offer data entry and marketing jobs. All of this is soul-destroying. The result: Youngsters spend time and energy looking to leave India. The lack of avenues breeds resentment and they leave. 9. Measly money Those who do get jobs hate their fate, instead of looking forward to a life of fulfillment. So miserly are employers that Indian professionals cant wait to leave the country. I know of talented chefs and journalists who have spent lakhs of rupees trying to leave India. One chef I know was offered Rs 9000 a month at a five-star hotel. He felt insulted and is seeking to leave at the earliest. Journalists are offered paltry salaries or none at all in the interiors. In many states, owners tell correspondents to attract advertisements so they can take home commission from them. A career in films, too, can be heartbreaking for the young. All of them leave. 10. Talent trample Calamity could be brewing in the story of Arjun Tendulkar, chosen for Mumbais under-14 cricket squad ahead of others with far better performances. A cricket official has said this was done because he has the genes of Sachin Tendulkar. This official shouldve been sacked, but he is gloating instead. Such disrespect of talent has brought India much disgrace. It makes the nation look like a banana republic. Its the same with politics, cinema, journalism, economy, and even art. It makes people leave. They look for countries that respect talent and are willing to pay for it. These are strong reasons why Indians look to leave India because India is a fair weather nation. Shinde said that Congress is the only party which follows the fundamental principle of secularism and has given opportunities to several members from dalit, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and minority communities to rise. "Our leader Sonia Gandhi gave me, a dalit, an opportunity to become Leader of the House in Lok Sabha and there are many names from SC, ST, OBC, minority communities who were made ministers and given other opportunities. "The communities have been adequately represented in the government," he said. The home minister underlined the importance of rise of regional parties and said that if any leader who parted ways with Congress in the past wanted to join again, it should be taken into consideration.

India is a sexually repressed place, that will change with time; in the mean-while this famous saying: Gun Control is hitting where you aim or The morality behind gun control is john doe being tied to a fence post vs john doe explaining how his attackers got those holes in them. Not too long of a post, crime is reduced where there is concealed carry. US people would know that, anyone going against weapons is a wussy and frankly not a sikh. That's really the only solution while other things work themselves out, or we work them out. Otherwise, you're saying that because you don't 'like' or are 'scared' of weapons for your 'feeling of safety' 100,000's of people should be rape, killed, and etc.

All I can offer is that — unlike the young woman who died in December two weeks after being brutally gang raped, and so many others — my story didn’t end, and I can continue to tell it. When I fought to live that night, I hardly knew what I was fighting for. A male friend and I had gone for a walk up a mountain near my home. Four armed men caught us and made us climb to a secluded spot, where they raped me for several hours, and beat both of us. They argued among themselves about whether or not to kill us, and finally let us go. At 17, I was just a child. Life rewarded me richly for surviving. I stumbled home, wounded and traumatized, to a fabulous family. With them on my side, so much came my way. I found true love. I wrote books. I saw a kangaroo in the wild. I caught buses and missed trains. I had a shining child. The century changed. My first gray hair appeared. Too many others will never experience that. They will not see that it gets better, that the day comes when one incident is no longer the central focus of your life. One day you find you are no longer looking behind you, expecting every group of men to attack. One day you wind a scarf around your throat without having a flashback to being choked. One day you are not frightened anymore. Rape is horrible. But it is not horrible for all the reasons that have been drilled into the heads of Indian women. It is horrible because you are violated, you are scared, someone else takes control of your body and hurts you in the most intimate way. It is not horrible because you lose your “virtue.” It is not horrible because your father and your brother are dishonored. I reject the notion that my virtue is located in my <banned word filter activated>, just as I reject the notion that men’s brains are in their genitals. If we take honor out of the equation, rape will still be horrible, but it will be a personal, and not a societal, horror. We will be able to give women who have been assaulted what they truly need: not a load of rubbish about how they should feel guilty or ashamed, but empathy for going through a terrible trauma. The week after I was attacked, I heard the story of a woman who was raped in a nearby suburb. She came home, went into the kitchen, set herself on fire and died. The person who told me the story was full of admiration for her selflessness in preserving her husband’s honor. Thanks to my parents, I never did understand this. The law has to provide real penalties for rapists and protection for victims, but only families and communities can provide this empathy and support. How will a teenager participate in the prosecution of her rapist if her family isn’t behind her? How will a wife charge her assailant if her husband thinks the attack was more of an affront to him than a violation of her? At 17, I thought the scariest thing that could happen in my life was being hurt and humiliated in such a painful way. At 49, I know I was wrong: the scariest thing is imagining my 11-year-old child being hurt and humiliated. Not because of my family’s honor, but because she trusts the world and it is infinitely painful to think of her losing that trust. When I look back, it is not the 17-year-old me I want to comfort, but my parents. They had the job of picking up the pieces. This is where our work lies, with those of us who are raising the next generation. It lies in teaching our sons and daughters to become liberated, respectful adults who know that men who hurt women are making a choice, and will be punished. When I was 17, I could not have imagined thousands of people marching against rape in India, as we have seen these past few weeks. And yet there is still work to be done. We have spent generations constructing elaborate systems of patriarchy, caste and social and sexual inequality that allow abuse to flourish. But rape is not inevitable, like the weather. We need to shelve all the gibberish about honor and virtue and did-she-lead-him-on and could-he-help-himself. We need to put responsibility where it lies: on men who violate women, and on all of us who let them get away with it while we point accusing fingers at their victims. We protest against bipran ki reet when we criticise Sikhs who celebrate karva chauth, rakhree/raksha bandan etc because Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaaj says 'Jab Lag Khalsa Rahe Niara, Tab Lag Tej Dioon Mein Sara. Jab Eh Gaye Birpran Ki Reet, Mein Na Karoon In Ki Parteet.' Under article 25 of the Indian constitution, Hindus include Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains. Are you celebrating Deepavali (divali) today? Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj was the first Guru to secure release of prisoners from Babar's prison. How come we don't celebrate that day? If we want to break free from the shackles of article 25 of the Indian constitution and the constitution in general, we must start by celebrating Bandi Cchor Divas on another day in line with Gurmat? After all we have different dates for Gurpurabs depending on which calendar we follow. SGPC could declare another date to pray for the release of all prisoners still languishing in jails around the world. I realise ive jumped from one point to another and I appologise if ive offended anyone. I'm not saying don't celebrate Bandi Cchor Divas, just saying we need to know what we're celebrating and when. How does Bandi Cchor Divas coincide with Divali? Guru Hargobind Ji Maharaaj was released on Divali day and made it to Amritsar on the same Divali day from Gwalior, south of Agra which today would take one 8hours in a train, in those days 5days atleast on horseback? thats assuming Maharaaj did not stop on way to meet Sangatah who would of course have been greeting and congratulating. So how exactly does Divali and Bandi Cchor Divas coincide? Is this an accurate depiction of Sikh history and an accurate interpretation of Sikh sentiment? Or are some Sikhs so eager to celebrate Divali, and so fervent to want to link Divali to Sikh practice and tradition that they simply had to find or create an incident that is suggested to have happened on or close to Divali day, and use that as a pretext to celebrate? and why do we not celebrate the Bandi Cchor Divas of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj from Babars prison along with the innocent prisoners mostly women and children?! or does that not matter since there was no divali or raksha bandan or karva chauth then?! Why aren’t Sikhs extolled to celebrate Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaaj’s Bandi Cchor Divas? Why is there no Deep Maala to commemorate this day? Because it does not coincide with Divali? Or it did not happen close enough to Divali day? Or there was no Harmandar Sahib to be lit up with lamps then? Or simply because this Bandi Cchor provides no pretext for celebrating Divali? We light candles and deevay and fireworks polluting our atmosphere...WHY? is a celebration not complete without them? if this is not Bipran Ki Reet, i dont know what is. A nuclear co-operation agreement had been signed two years ago between between the two nations, but its actual implementation had been stalled over the details. Canada had wanted more oversight over where the products wound up, something India had resisted. Now a joint committee will ensure that Canada gets the kind of follow-up it had required. The two prime ministers were scheduled to announce the finalization of the administrative agreement at an event at Hyderabad House, a former royal building now used by the Indian government. They also signed a social security agreement that would shield businesses in the two countries from double paying for pensions and benefits. Harper told reporters Tuesday that Canada was satisfied with the checks and balances it gets under the deal. The prime minister touched on other issues beyond trade Tuesday, including some that go directly to the Indo-Canadian community. The Indian government once again pressed Canada to be on guard for Sikh extremism, a warning that comes at the same time as some Indo-Canadians call for justice for a 1984 Sikh massacre. India’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Preneet Kaur, raised the issue of extremism during a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and officials from the two nations on Tuesday. Harper is on a six-day visit to India, primarily focused on trade and investment. “Prime minister, there was another area of great concern for us, which was the revival of anti-India rhetoric in Canada, and I am from the state of Punjab, which we are very happy you will be visiting…,” Kaur said, referring to his upcoming stop in Chandigarh. “We have after very hard times got a good situation of peace and progress back in Punjab and in India and we would like that to continue, so it does concern us I think, and we do appreciate very much that you have very been forthright and open about your stand on this.” This was not the first time India has raised the issue with Canada. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird also heard the Indian government’s concerns during a visit earlier this year, and the Indian Overseas Congress has gone so far as to accuse Canadian politicians of Indian origin of ignoring the issue. Kaur was likely referring to the appearance, particularly in British Columbia of flags and seals bearing the Khalistan flag at parades and on temples. Khalistan is the name of proposed separate Sikh state, and pockets of the Indo-Canadian community support the idea. The 1985 bombing of an Air India flight that killed 331 was believed by the police to have been orchestrated by Sikh extremists based in Canada. Hundreds of Sikhs protested on Parliament Hill in March against the death row sentence of an acknowledged Sikh terrorist, Balwant Singh Rajoana. Harper responded to Kaur by saying that Canada is a supporter of a united India, painting the pro-Khalistan movement as marginal. “This is a view that is shared not just widely in Canada but very widely and very mainstream among our Indo-Canadian community,” said Harper. “We have over a million people who trace their origins to the Indian subcontinent and among my very large delegation on this trip are a considerable number of prominent Indo-Canadians, and certainly the support for the great progress India has made over the past generation is virtually universal in this community.” But the Indian government’s pressure on the issue has been poorly received in Canada by some in the Indo-Canadian community and even the federal opposition, particularly when taken in the context of the November 1984 massacre of more than 3,000 Sikhs. The remains of murdered Sikhs in razed villages were uncovered as recently as last year, and many believe the Indian government has not done enough to bring the perpetrators to justice. The massacre occurred in the aftermath of the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. The bodyguards were believed to have been retaliating for a bloody military operation in June of that same year aimed at extricating Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Groups such as the World Sikh Organization and the Canadian Sikh Congress argues that the community has a right to engage in a peaceful dialogue about a sovereign homeland, and the Indian government is meddling in the affairs of Indo-Canadians. Another group, Sikhs for Justice, recently called on Harper to advocate for human rights for Sikhs while in India. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair referred to the events of 1984 as “pogroms” in a recent release. “The victims and survivors of 1984 have waited too long for recognition of their plight and frustration,” Mulcair said. “Rehabilitation and support for the broken families, especially the widows, must be prioritized.” Harper also met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday during an official ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the former seat of the British viceroy in India. The enormous building, fringed by fountains, acres of groomed lawns and monument-sized stone stairways, is now the home of Indian president Pranab Mukherjee, who Harper met midday. Harper and Singh were expected to meet again late Tuesday afternoon to sign a series of bilateral agreements.

I just had a thought after discovering many unseen pics of Sikh history and other Sikh texts which have been forgotten (just about) online, that there must have been Sikhs who stored Lala Jagat Narain's garbage and other anti-Sikh media reports in Indian newspapers somewhere. Pictures, videos, newspaper cuttings etc if someone has such material then can you please let me know? I will be very happy to receive such material to spread on social media etc. Especially any material related to controversial actions of Punjab Police etc.

Alleged Atrocities Committed by War Criminal Brar in June 1984 Attack on The Golden Temple A cursory glance at the more heavily GOI propagandised Indian newspapers, shows that opposition by the Indian National Congress Party (itself, by no means united on this issue), to the memorial to the martyrs of the June 1984 attack on Shree Harimandir Sahib, shows no signs of abating anytime soon. When considered with the wider perspective of a minor alleged assault on Brar, the hysteria eagerly whipped up by collaborating media about the memorial is a sure way of deflecting attention away from its self-created problems that threaten to topple its government. It is a tried, tested and proven method of scaring the Indian electorate into allowing Congress to retain its loose grip on a population that is day by day losing confidence in its ability to properly utilise the vast funds available for its disposal (as the GOI). At least, that is, to the benefit of anyone other than its senior ministers and their families(!) See "Robert Vadra" and "Salman Khurshid" (for a couple of more recent shambles out of the broader series of illicit dealings to emerge from the corrupt Congress machine). Revelations about rampant corruption within the Congress Party are now emerging so fast that a new exposee emerges before the last had any time to settle down. It must be ruing the day Anna Hazare came out of nowhere to emerge as its nemises. The way things stand, Congress looks set to receive a humiliating drubbing at the next polls. Its UPA allies are already withdrawing support and we haven't even reached election time. Amidst this backdrop, it becomes clear why the Congress Party is reverting to its yellowy divisive and diversionary politics of yesteryear (think "Indira" and "Rajiv"). Its desparation will only increase as it approaches the Elections, so expect to see more of the same. That's why I see the minor alleged assault on Brar as part of the above struggle to retain power. Therefore, I am not too concerned with the Congress Party controlled Indian media spin on Brar. The truth will out. And to an extent, much of it already has. Let the investigation reveal the rest. I have read some excellent articles by several commentators, not least by T Sher Singh, Dal Khalsa and SF-UK, which in my opinion are the best pieces of analysis I have read on the topic, that have already comprehensively taken Brar's allegations apart to pieces and ripped his continuously changing story to shreds. Enough has probably already been said about the Brar alleged minor "assault" episode/stunt.

  16. Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh. I have a plea to make to anyone reading this, this plea is in regards to a Singh living in a foreign country for more than a decade. Singh is tomorrow going to talk with a politician regarding political asylum in his chosen nation. Singh needs official documents regarding what India is doing to Sikhs, that is human rights violation etc. It will be greatly appreciated if reports, and websites which can help Singh prove his point can be provided before 3,0, clock tomorrow.   17. Well I have seen alot of guys believing absolute myths about Pakistan... So , as probably the only person on this forum with Pakistani Muslim background , I would like to say few things... First thing Sikhs should understand is this ... Pakistan is the most "pro-Sikh" state in whole South Asia .... Sikhs in Pakistan have full rights..they work as doctors , policemen , engineers , pharmacists , technicians , politicians , singers , and even as Army officers ! The Islamic Republic of Pakistan treats Sikhs with outmost respect... Comparison between India and Pakistan when it comes to Sikhs : There are few things I'd like to point-out... Read and decide it for yourself...... 1-Pakistan recognize "Sikhism" as completely separate , independent , and unique religion...While India doesn't even recognize Sikhism. Sikhism is a mere 'branch of Hinduism' under Indian constitution... 2- In Pakistan , Sikhs have their own separate "marriage act" for decades now and they marry as "Sikh" on 'Sikh marriage forum' ...Whereas in India..Indian state didn't give Sikhs any marriage act..Sikhs married , throughout Indian history , on "Hindu marriage forums" ... 3- Pakistani state NEVER persecuted Sikhs or even touched their holy sites... Do I even need to mention what Indian state did in 1984? All these things are the reasons due to which Pakistani Sikhs consider themselves lucky that they left in Pakistani Punjab and didn't go to Indian Punjab... Listen it from the mouth of Sikhs themselves... See how Pakistani state care for its Sikh citizens..When terrorists killed two Sikhs (Others were saved by Pakistan Army!) ... Pakistan's deputy attorney general cleaned shoes of Sikhs in Amritsar , Golden Temple , Pakistan Gurdwaras etc ... Lets have a friendly discussion here...May be we can learn alot from eachother and remove our misconceptions about eachother...Afterall , we are the sons of same land...same Punjab!

Im going india in november, and i wanted a list of gurdwaras/takhts in punjab to visit, im arriving at amritsar airport, so ill be going to sri harmandar sahib for isnaans etc, and sri akaal takht, and i planned to go to gurdwara bauli sahib where im gonna do the 84 steps jap ji sahib, and manikaran sahib (which isnt in punjab) and gurdwara san sahib lol, so yeah if anyone knows of other gurdwaras to go to please inform me =) oh yeah, im going to Takht sri anandpur sahib, and takht sri damdama sahib aswell

  20. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. I would just like to ask about the borders of a future Sikh nation if it where to exist. Many people include the whole of Himachal Pradesh as well as Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. Some maps even include Delhi. For those of you that support the formation of Khalistan, would you just like the current Indian state of Punjab to secede from India or would you like these other areas as well, despite them having a majority Hindu population. Also, from both a Sikh and Punjabi nationalist point of view, why is their no agitation to include West Punjab i.e. Pakistani Punjab into the proposed new nation. Would you not like to include Nankana Sahib in the new nation, as well as cities like Lahore which have a lot of historical significance. There is no doubt that human rights abuses take place in India, but should there not also be action or protests against Pakistan and their treatment of minorities. Or do you remain silent over the issue because you need the support of the Pakistani government for any activity against India. Surely you should campaign for the inclusion of the Sikhs in Pakistan and West Punjab in to a future state of Khalistan, yet I only see you protesting against the Indian government and I always see a lot of hatred for India. I am not trying to stir up hatred toward any group. I am just curious to why certain areas of India where there is not a Sikh majority are included in your proposed state, whereas areas of Pakistan where Sikhs exist but are in minority are not.

This would have been the first execution in India since 2004. His execution has been stayed - for the time being - in response to the rising whirlpool of politics that's engulfed Punjab on this issue. That India should sully its record again after 8 years with state sanctioned murder is a matter of distress, but this consideration seems largely removed from the politics of Rajoana's execution. However even in addition to principled opposition to the death penalty, the cynical considerations swirling around his execution, the specifics of the case itself are significant. Opposition to capital punishment is removed from the specifics of the case, basing the argument on human rights, the range and extent of power given to the State, citizen's right to equality before law, the inherent arbitrariness in the exercise of power by individual state functionaries, and irrevocability of the punishment especially given the possibility of wrongful conviction. In contrast, the proponents of capital punishment argue on the specifics, seeking justification in the heinousness of the crime, recidivism, retribution, and deterrence. In this the proponents are almost vigilante in their perspective, with their preoccupation with punishment for the alleged lawbreaker than the state, its powers and processes, and civil liberties Nevertheless in this instance, the specifics too raise some disturbing questions. Balwant Singh is on death row for his role in the suicide bombing of the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh in 1995. 17 persons, including the Chief Minister were killed. The history has some relevance. Punjab had been racked by insurgency since the seventies, with the regional autonomy movement progressively hardening into a secessionist movement over the decades. President's Rule was established in 1987 in the aftermath of Operation Bluestar and the Sikh pogrom in Delhi in 1984. After five years of President Rule checkered by militancy and heavy police crackdown, elections were called in 1992, but were postponed twice. Protesting that the elections were unlikely to be "free and fair", the Sikh parties boycotted the elections. With voter turnout in the low twenties, Beant Singh's ascendancy was widely disparaged by the Sikhs as lacking legitimacy. Militancy and consequent police clampdown continued unabated. Beant Singh was assassinated in 1995 by suicide bomber Dilawar Singh, aided by Balwant Singh and others. During trial, Balwant Singh refused counsel, asking instead to be allowed to represent himself. He did not cross-examine witnesses. He was awarded the death penalty. In 2009, when his death sentence came for conviction in the High Court [as part of the legal process], he again refused counsel and asked to be allowed to argue his own case. His intent in each instance was not to seek acquittal. In the 14 years that the case made its way from the trial court to the High Court, Balwant Singh held to his story, claiming that he strapped the bomb on to the body of Dilawar Singh. The High Court, noting that there was no evidence in favour of Balwant Singh in order to "have a second thought on the murder reference of Balwant Singh, coupled with his three confessional statements, there is no other alternate with us but to confirm" the death penalty. Balwant also refused to appeal against the death penalty administratively through mercy petition to the Governor and/or President. In a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, he writes, "legal system, judicial system of this Country and the rulers of this Country have been discriminating" [and that] "slavery of such system is not acceptable to me". In embracing 17 years of imprisonment including solitary confinement and ultimate execution, Balwant Singh is making a political statement. In his letter and statements, he brings out his search for justice in the democratic framework, his feeling of marginalization and his desire for rebellion. He sees the injustice of the swiftness of response when a five star hotel in Mumbai is under siege and the dilatory tactics of commissioning enquiry committees without any accountability for the thousands who perished in the 1984 Sikh pogrom. He writes, "thousands of Sikhs were massacred. It is submitted that these murderers have neither been punished nor been punished by any Court of law of the country even after 25 years [...] Here I would like to ask your Lordship that the persons who have killed thousands of innocent xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx [redacted] are not the terrorists. Why not the law of the nation, [redacted] try to interfere in the matter. On the contrary, when the hotels of Mumbai are attacked then the military of the country immediately interferes. The commandos of Delhi initiate immediate action after reaching Delhi. This is made to known as to which in which village the assailants reside in [redacted]. Contrary to it, the [redacted] of [redacted] of people in Delhi could not be identified. How the security can be assured without the law when everybody knows the killers" [sic]. He locates the justification for the suicide bombing in this persecution by the state (as per his contention) and the lack of accountability saying in a statement to the District and Sessions Judge, Patiala, "conscience of a person have self respect refuses to accept the authority of callous rulers. Such feels instigate a person for becoming human bomb rather than to become a human being [sic]" The purpose of this article is not to romanticize Balwant Singh or terrorism. But surely some introspection is required when an obviously bright individual seeks political expression in the rejection of the "democratic" government itself even at the cost of his own life? Our democratic systems are discriminating - on class, caste, and religious lines. After 64 years of democracy, which by definition means people's control over the state to ensure propagation of their interests, more than 3 quarters of our country still ekes out a living on just Rs 20 per day. In our ostensibly secular state, all significant minorities have been persecuted (1984, 1992, 2002, 2008) without any accountability. Likewise the constitutional promise of equality before rule of law is flouted routinely. The poor are routinely displaced, their rights violated, their very being often declared illegal. The poor overwhelmingly populate our jails; around 70% are under-trials, not convicts. The death penalty too is disproportionately administered to the poor. Balwant Singh's execution is now embroiled in cynical politics from all sides, however whatever the outcome, we all share some blame in perpetuation of a system where meaningful political expression, redress and justice is denied to all but a small minority.
