    Real Kirtan Instruments?!?!

Sat Siri Akaal ji veere, I just have an urgent question. Can you please tell me which Kirtan instruments were used before the british "Vaaja/Baaja" came? I mean what kind of instruments Guru jis played with , bhai mardana etc.. I really want to learn - I have this strong feeling and this is my only chance because my parents are recently in india and I hope I can beg to them that they can buy me a instrument.. Because I dont kno where to buy.. I just saw a video on youtube which instrument is this?? Sarangi , Tanti Saaj? I dont know the real diffence please tell me.. I really want to learn it.. because I can identify myself with these vibes and tunes... please!! I love these deep dark sounding string instruments combined with guru jis bani it is such a BLISS! I dont know how to explain . I like these deep dark tunes.. and not these happy jarring tunes/sounds. Here is another example , maybe this can explain more: thank you for helping me. And btw: if you ask why I dont go to a local gurudwara : its simple, I live in germany we have no gurudwara near here... I know it will be difficult to learn on myself etc... but what else I can do ? I have no choice and I really want to ... These tunes just fullify my a place in my heart.. I feel I am lacking something and this is the solution...

  10. Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh One time Sant Baba Bishan Singh Ji, the 10th jathedhar of Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Damdami Taksal decided to visit Amritsar and in particular Sant Baba Shaam Singh Ji. Sant Baba Shaam Singh Ji was the kirtani of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji who had spent over 90 years doing seva with his Sarandha. Sant Baba Bishan Singh Ji and the jatha had done darshan at Harmandir Sahib Ji and then began to make their way to the asthan of Santji. As they reached there they found an old singh cleaning the sewer/drain. They asked where Sant Baba Shaam Singh Ji was and were advised by the old Gursikh to go inside the asthan and sit down and Santji would be with them soon. The old Gursikh then did Panj ishnaan and went and sat in front of them. When he did this he was asked again that they wished to have darshan of Sant Baba Shaam Singh Ji - the old Gursikh relied that the vessel sat before them was Sant Baba Shaam Singh Ji. Waheguruji... May Maharaj bless with with such humility. Loose translation of Katha by Giani Ram Singh Ji Wahegurujikakhalsawahegurujikifateh

  12. THE POWER OF ARDAAS - Bhai Balbir Singh JI recounts his encounter with sarna and darshan crew at Gurdwara Rakabganj and how his ardas was granted with Victory (4:09) sadh sangat ji (addressing the congregation) this scripture that I am singing for you, please do not be confused on whos scripture this is, everyone knows and I have before also begged everyone that these are the words of our tenth master. It is the celestial words sung from their own mouth, Guru Gobind SIngh Ji the true King. Those who are speaking out and opposing this scripture should not do so as it belongs to our master and to the panth. I remember I was doing Kirtan here a while ago,(he Sings)"TIN BEDIYAN KI KUL VIKHEY PRAGTEY NANAK RAI". While I was singing Professor Darshan Singh was sitting nearby with the prabandhaks(comittee) and they grabbed my arm and stopped me singing hymns. "Stop this" they said "What do you think you are doing" I replied " I am singing the hymns of Guru Gobind Singh Ji which I have sung for many years at Sri Harimandir Sahib, Why are you stopping this kirtan" they stopped me but I felt very hurt, the sangat also felt very hurt when they acted in this manner. I did ardaas(Prayer) to the almighty truth, please bring that time, when I will be able to again sing those hymns from which I had been so rudely stopped. (Sangat shouts out victory slogans)"BOLEY SO NIHAL, SAT SRI AKAAL"

  14. Why do all kirtanis and jathas pronounce "Deh Siva" as "Deh Shiva"? Can someone further explain the meaning of Siva? Is it a synonym for Shiva, if so isn't it still incorrect to pronounce it as shiva rather than siva?

  22. Waheguruji ka khalsa Waheguruji ki fateh ji Dear Sangat ji There have been a couple of posts enquiring about Keertan Notations. Therefore, I'd like to start a thread dedicated to keertan notations alone. Any notations in previous posts in other threads will be pasted here along with some others. One post will have a keertan notation for one shabad alone. If anyone would like to request notations for a particular shabad they wish to learn, please PM me or start another thread. I request anyone to refrain from any kind of discussions on this thread so we could keep it for notations alone. Thank you.
  23. Bhai Narinder Singh ji was on his UK kirtan trip recently. Does anybody know if there are any recordings of his kirtan available anywhere from UK kirtan and also from his Australia kirtan.
  24. ‘Amrit Vela’ is the first official music release by The Gurmat Sangeet Academy (GSA) - a ‘not-for-profit’ Sikh Music school. The primary artists Bhai Harjinder Singh Lallie and Bhai Narinderjit Singh Lallie are very well known in the UK and abroad for their very traditional and orthodox kirtan which is performed using authentic stringed and percussion instruments such as the taoos and the Jori. During the twentieth century, kirtan became increasingly influenced by both internal and external pressures such as the growing popularity of popular music (film, bhangra etc). Sikh ragis were directly influenced by this and this led to a deterioration in upholding our musical traditions leading to a near extinction of particular Sikh instruments, reets (musical renditions and tunes) and even the rendition of some of our ragas. The GSA set out to reinvigorate these styles and in particular to raise awareness of the traditional style of kirtan. The release of 'Amrit Vela’ comes amidst a revival of traditional Sikh musical instruments and an avid interest in Sikh musicology around the UK and the rest of the world. The album features a number of traditional compositions performed with a number of Sikh instruments including the Sarangi, Taoos, Dilraba, Tarsehnai and the Rabab. All the recordings are accompanied by the Jori (Sikh percussion) and a tabla. This album contains sabads that are in Ragas generally recited in the early hours of the morning during sunrise. During these hours one has the opportunity for deep contemplation and self-reflection, it is an opportune time for spiritual practice and growth. The Sikh scriptures give Gurbani Kirtan the highest status with regards to spiritual practice and we hope the listener can appreciate the subtleness, penetrating and empowering sequencing of notes within the Ragas and sabads chosen for this album. Amrit Vela can be purchased directly from the Gurmat Sangeet Academy from here: http://www.gurmatsangeet.org/purchaseamritvela/. Alternatively, you can purchase from iTunes/Amazon by clicking here: http://www.gurmatsangeet.org/purchase-ambrosial-hours/. In addition, the album is also available from DTF stores (Birmingham UK). The Gurmat Sangeet Academy provides professional and high class Indian music tuition open to all regardless of background, colour, race, religion and perhaps most importantly musical ability! Their aim is to promote kirtan (Sikh music), especially Tanti Saaj (stringed instruments) based kirtan which is done in accordance with Gurmat (the way of the Guru) Contributions made by the musicians on the album are done solely on a Seva (selfless service) basis and all proceeds are going back into Gurmat Sangeet Academy projects. These projects are purely non-profit in which no money is made by any of the project contributors. All proceeds go back into Seva and to maintain the future longevity of the series. We urge you to offer your support by purchasing only legitimate and legal copies of the album. Press and media can claim a free copy of “Amrit Vela” from the Gurmat Sangeet Academy team by emailing harj@lallie.co.uk citing 'general enquiries' in the subject header.
