  3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-59901035 A man who beat his father to death with a cricket bat and a metal dog bowl has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years. Santokh Singh, 59, known as Charlie, was attacked by his son Phillip Badwal, 25, at their home in Airedale Road, Bradford, on 30 November 2020. Bradford Crown Court heard Badwal, who was on bail at the time of the attack, inflicted "unspeakable violence" after an argument with his father. He initially denied murder but changed his plea on day two of his trial. Read more Yorkshire stories Mr Singh, who had worked as a publican and an engineer, suffered extensive skull fractures, fractures to his face and nose and a broken leg during the 20-minute attack at the family home. Judge Jonathan Rose described the murder as "a savage, brutal and prolonged attack on a defenceless and vulnerable man". The court heard Badwal had previously subjected his father to threats and violence and had forced him to go out and buy drugs for him as well as pay off drug debts. The day before the attack Mr Singh had gone with relatives to see a new flat, having said how unhappy he had been in the family home. After the attack Badwal called drug dealer numbers instead of emergency services. He also tried to cover his tracks by throwing the cricket bat over a neighbour's fence, disposing of his phone and telling police his father had come home that morning badly injured. Barrister Peter Moulson QC said Badwal's addiction to drugs was the root cause of the offending and his client could not recall what had happened in the house. At the time of the attack, he was on bail for his involvement in multiple street robberies and was jailed for five years at Leicester Crown Court in May. Speaking after the hearing Det Supt Tony Nicholson, said: "Badwal unleashed a serious and sustained assault on his father in the house that they shared, leaving him with injuries which were to sadly prove fatal. "Rather than seek urgent medical attention for his seriously injured father, Badwal contacted drug dealers before finally ringing the emergency services, who, despite their best efforts, were unable to revive Mr Singh." ---- Mod Note: Due to your majority of your anti-sikh posting of news articles (mostly all negative), we will be looking forward a bit balance from your account. Superior Court Justice Kofi Barnes said Dalwinder Singh got angry after discovering that both women were organizing a family gathering to celebrate his and his wife’s son without his knowledge, triggering an argument that spiralled into a “series of horrifying and tragic events.” Within an 11 minute span, Singh stabbed and killed Baljit Thandi, 32, and her 60-year-old mother, Avtar Kaur, Barnes said on Friday, while delivering his verdict and sentencing inside a Brampton courthouse, as Singh looked on from the prisoners box. Both life sentences will run concurrent. “The evidence is overwhelming,” Barnes said. “Mr. Singh’s actions were senseless, shocking and tragic.” When police arrived at the home in the Starhill Crescent and Arabia Gate area at around 10:45 p.m. on the day of the murders, they found Singh holding the baby inside the home, with the lifeless bodies of the infant’s grandmother and mother lying on the bloodied kitchen floor. Thandi sustained more than 70 injuries including several stab wounds to the chest, neck, head and face, according to evidence presented at trial, while Kaur sustained more than 40 such injuries. The court heard that the couple were arguing that night because Singh was angry about the financial burden and pressure from hosting dozens of people for the Lohri festivities his wife was planning without his approval for the following day. Singh told police in a video statement that he “felt betrayed” and insulted by his wife and her mother, and was fed up with his mother-in-law’s interference, over what was supposed to be joyous Lohri festivities to celebrate the birth of the couple’s son. In making its case, the Crown said Singh then attacked the women in an upstairs bedroom of the residence. He forcibly dragged them to the kitchen where the attack continued. Minutes after killing both women and just before his arrest at the family home that night, Singh, then 29, told family friends, via phone, “I killed them both. I couldn’t tolerate anymore. I was tired of their lying.” Singh’s defence counsel sought a verdict of manslaughter suggesting that Singh did not intend to commit murder. The Crown said Singh attempted to cover his tracks by claiming that he was attacked by both women and had to defend himself. He then attempted to clean up and place a knife in his dead wife’s hand and another next to his mother-in-law to support the ruse that they had killed each other, but the wounds sustained by both women show that they were the ones trying to defend themselves. The court heard the couple married in 2016 and hit a rocky patch in their relationship in the summer of 2017, when Singh was charged with assaulting his wife, who had just given birth to their son. At the time of the killings, Singh was in breach of court orders that stipulated that he not be around his wife or live at the residence. 5. Find it strange how they talk about deporting him back to India, does anyone know more ? Alice Ruggles murder: Trimaan Dhillon to serve minimum of 22 years 26 April 2017 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-39709160 Share this with Facebook Share this with Messenger Share this with Twitter Share this with Email Share Image copyrightNORTHUMBRIA POLICE Image captionTrimaan Dhillon claimed Alice Ruggles' death was an accident A soldier has been jailed for life for breaking into his ex-girlfriend's flat and cutting her throat from ear to ear. Alice Ruggles, 24, was found fatally injured at her home in Rawling Road, Gateshead, in October. Lance Corporal Trimaan "Harry" Dhillon, 26, denied murder at Newcastle Crown Court, saying she had fallen on a carving knife during an argument. Sentencing him to a minimum of 22 years, judge Paul Sloan QC said the murder was an act of "utter barbarism". The court heard the Edinburgh-based signaller with 2 Scots became obsessed with graduate Miss Ruggles - originally from Leicestershire - and stalked her when he realised she was moving on after their intense relationship ended. Dhillon claimed she died as a result of an accident when she leapt at him with a carving knife. He told the jury they had been struggling, that he had tried to disarm her and she cut herself when he blocked a lunge, and the knife stuck in her neck when she fell to the floor. The court was told Miss Ruggles, who had complained to police about Dhillon's behaviour, was found on her bathroom floor on 12 October and had bled to death. Dhillon had climbed into Miss Ruggles' flat through an open window and set about murdering her, probably kneeling on her back and holding her head up to slash her throat at least six times, cutting through to the spine. She suffered 24 injuries, including defensive wounds, while 6ft 1in Dhillon suffered none. The jury was played a frantic 999 call by Miss Ruggle's friend Maxine McGill in which she described finding the 24-year-old "covered in blood" and named Dhillon as the killer, calling him an "absolute psychopath". Media captionA short clip from the 999 call made by Alice Ruggles' housemate In evidence, Ms McGill claimed her friend had complained to police about Dhillon's obsessive behaviour but that she felt she had been "palmed off". Northumbria Police said at the time no-one knew the level of threat Dhillon posed, but added it had referred their actions to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). Image copyrightFAMILY PHOTO Image captionAlice Ruggles was working in Newcastle at the time of her murder Miss Ruggles and Dhillon developed an intense relationship over the internet while he was serving in Afghanistan and she was working for Sky in Newcastle. The jury were told Dhillon soon set about alienating her from her friends, knocked her self-confidence and demanded her constant attention. His previous partner suffered similarly and her ordeal only ended after she took out a restraining order. The court heard when the relationship ended Dhillon stalked her ground-floor flat at night, knocking on her bedroom window and "terrifying" her. He was told to stay away from her by police, but the Indian-born soldier ignored the warning. Sentencing, Dhillon Judge Sloan told him: "Not a shred of remorse have you shown from first to last - indeed you were concentrating so hard on getting your story right when giving evidence you forgot even to shed a crocodile tear." Image captionAlice Ruggles' mother, Sue Hills, said none of her friends or family "will ever be the same again" After the verdict Miss Ruggles' family released a statement through the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, which helps people avoid becoming victims of violence, in which they said her loss would stay with them for the rest of their lives. Her mother Sue Hills said: "I just wish we had identified those signs of stalking which, with hindsight, are so obvious. "I would like what happened to Alice to encourage others to seek support if they are worried about someone's behaviour." Speaking outside court, Dr Hills said there were "important lessons to be learned". "We welcomed Trimaan Dhillon into our family and he came across as a normal person," she said. "Unfortunately he was a cruel, manipulative bully who made Alice miserable and took her away from us." The parents of murdered student Alice Ruggles say they are worried her killer could be released early if he is sent to India to finish his sentence. Speaking to the BBC, Alice's father Clive Ruggles said he feared Trimaan Dhillon's minimum sentence could be interpreted as his full sentence if he was sent to his native country. Dhillon was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years in prison in 2017 for killing Alice in October 2016. Why have the police taped off part of your neighbourhood? "If he goes back to his home country, then that would mean that we wouldn't know where he is, we wouldn't be given information every year like we are now, we would just be constantly worried that he'd been released without our knowledge." Alice, originally from Market Harborough, had reported her ex-boyfriend to the police multiple times before her death. Dhillon cut 24-year-old Alice's throat at her flat in Gateshead, in the north east, where she was a student, in October 2016. Trimaan Dhillon (Image: PA) During his trial, the judge described the murder as an act of "utter barbarism". 138238889450 Mr Ruggles also told the BBC that if Dhillon stayed in the UK, the Ruggles family's thoughts and views, and the judge's remarks would be considered before he was considered for release. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said the prisons minister had spoken to the Ruggles family to discuss the case and their concerns. The spokesman added: "While we are determined to punish and deport foreign national offenders, this would only happen where an appropriate sentence is guaranteed to be served overseas."

Some American missionary guy who apparently had a calling from his god (lmao) was thick enough to go to the Andaman islands which are under India, and preach the local tribal people about Jesus, god, and all that bs, Unsurprisingly he had arrows and other tribal weapons shot at him and died. Its heartwarming to know that none of these tribal people will be arrested, but the Indian police are still trying to find his massacred remains in the ocean. Apparently he did 3 year research into these people, clearly didn't learn much did he. His god had a completely different calling for him than what he had thought. These desperate missionaries have destroyed many indigenous tribal traditions in India especially in the North East. Homeless Latvian man ‘pounced on hotel housekeeper, 30, as she walked to work then sexually assaulted, murdered and buried her in a sleeping bag in the woods’ Vadims Ruskuls, 25, accused of sexually assaulting and murdering Pardeep Kaur Mrs Kaur, 30, attacked while walking to work at a hotel in Harlington, Middlesex She was last seen on CCTV cameras approaching a bridge over the M4 Her body was found a week later hidden in woods near to the bridge By Joseph Curtis For Mailonline Published: 18:22, 5 April 2017 | Updated: 20:40, 5 April 2017 +3 Vadims Ruskuls, 25, is accused of sexually assaulting and then murdering Pardeep Kaur, pictured, after 'attacking her beneath a motorway bridge' A homeless man is accused sexually assaulting and murdering a woman beneath a motorway bridge before dumping her body in undergrowth, a court heard. Latvian Vadims Ruskuls, 25, was thought to be sleeping rough with his mother beneath the bridge crossing the M4 when he allegedly murdered Pardeep Kaur. He allegedly pounced on the 30-year old hotel housekeeper as she walked to work. Mrs Kaur scratched her attacker as she desperately fought for her life but her screams would have been drowned out by the noise of motorway traffic, jurors were told. Afterwards, Ruskuls allegedly dragged her partially naked body by the ankles and hid it under an old sleeping bag and twigs. Opening his Old Bailey trial, Crispin Aylett QC told jurors: 'This is a truly terrible case. The evidence in this case is distressing and you will have to brace yourself for what is to come.' Mrs Kaur, a mother of one, was reported missing by her husband when she failed to return home from the Sheraton Skyline Hotel in Harlington, Middlesex. Her badly decomposed body was found nearly a week later hidden in undergrowth near Harlington Bridge in Hayes, west London. The court heard that the waste ground by the walkway on to the bridge over the M4 was a 'bleak spot used by rough sleepers, drunks and drug addicts' and was just yards from the busy motorway leading to Heathrow airport. Mr Aylett told jurors that Mrs Kaur was last picked up on CCTV cameras at 6.33am on Monday, October 17, last year as she walked towards the bridge. In a search of the area, a visiting officer from Norway, detective chief inspector Kenneth Berg, spotted a human foot sticking out from beneath a sleeping bag covered with branches which turned out to be Mrs Kaur. +3 Her body was found near this bridge over the M4, pictured, in Harlington, Middlesex A post-mortem examination failed to establish how she died but Mr Aylett said it was obvious from the way she had been found that it was murder. Investigators who trawled through the CCTV images also noticed a man under the bridge at the same time as Mrs Kaur. Less than half an hour later, someone was picked up on CCTV dragging her body away towards the patch of ground where it was later discovered. Mr Aylett said: 'The prosecution allege that the man under the bridge is Vadims Ruskuls and the figure dragging her body towards the woodlands must also be Vadims Ruskuls. 'What happened in the 25 minutes between those two pieces of film? The prosecution allege that the defendant must have pounced on Pardeep Kaur at some point on the ramp, that he then sexually assaulted her and he murdered her.' +3 This CCTV image was the last time Mrs Kaur was seen alive as she walked towards the bridge in Harlington, Middlesex The victim must have fought her attacker as the defendant was seen with scratches on his face afterwards, he said. But he added: 'If she had cried out, her screams would have been drowned out by the sound of the early morning traffic.' Ruskuls was allegedly caught after an officer recognised his image on CCTV to a man he had spoken to the day after the killing. In the early hours, the constable had been called to a house in Hayes to a report of a 'stoned' man trying to open the front door looking like he had been 'dragged through a hedge'. The officer found the suspect walking barefoot with scratches to his left cheek and neck, the court heard. Following his arrest for the murder of Mrs Kaur, Ruskuls' DNA was compared to samples taken from her body. His DNA was matched to samples from her ankle, sock, and the left cup of her bra with a probability of 'one in a billion', jurors were told. DNA from the victim's fingernails were also found to be a match, the court heard. Jurors were told that Mrs Kaur had come to live in Britain in 2011 with her husband Rachpal Singh who had a job at Fresh Foods in Hayes. They both worked six-days a week to send money to their five-year-old daughter who lived with her grandparents in India. When Mrs Kaur first disappeared, police suspected the husband because he initially lied to police saying he had seen her that morning when he had yet to return from a night shift. The court heard he had feared they would discover he was working without a permit. It was only after he came clean, that the investigation 'quickly moved on', Mr Aylett said. The defendant, who refused to make any comment in police interviews, denies murder. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4383724/Homeless-Latvian-man-pounced-hotel-housekeeper.html
  14. Controlling Muslim husband who forced wife to convert to Islam and wear a hijab before he killed her while she was pregnant is jailed for 17 years Mohammed Badiuzzaman admitted killing mother-of-three Sabeen Thandi He told colleagues he planned to kill wife and bragged jails were 'easy peasy' Forced victim into Muslim marriage and stopped her leaving house alone He was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill but later released Within weeks she was found strangled at her home in London by police By Emily Davies Published: 16:05, 27 May 2014 | Updated: 17:12, 27 May 2014 Victim: Mother-of-three Sabeen Thandi, 37, was forced her to wear a hijab head scarf and pressurised into an Islamic marriage by husband Mohammed Badiuzzaman A husband who strangled to death his pregnant wife two weeks after police arrested him for threatening to kill her with a hammer was sentenced to life imprisonment today. Mohammed Badiuzzaman, 34, pleaded guilty to murdering mother-of-three Sabeen Thandi at the Old Bailey earlier this month. Before the killing he told colleagues he planned to kill his wife, bragged that UK jail was ‘easy peasy’ and ranted about Oscar Pistorius. He was today sentenced to a minimum of 17 years in prison by Judge Christopher Moss QC, who described the defendant as ‘manipulative, devious and controlling’. Mrs Thandi was strangled at her home in Forest Gate, London, in July last year, a fortnight after she obtained a restraining order against her husband, and after police had arrested him for making death threats. Police officers are now under investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission for releasing Badiuzzaman before he went on to kill. Badiuzzaman had forced Mrs Thandi into a Muslim marriage and had moved in with her two months after they began dating in November 2012. He was controlling, preventing her from leaving the house alone, forcing her to throw away ‘revealing’ clothes and instead wear a hijab because otherwise she would ‘feel his wrath’. The security guard even tried to sell her home by visiting an estate agents and pretending he owned the property. Doctor’s receptionist Mrs Thandi grew sick of Badiuzzaman’s abuse and visited solicitors in Watford in June last year seeking a divorce. She took out an order from Watford County Court on June 17 against Badiuzzaman to prevent him from entering her home, as she feared for her children’s safety. But two days later Badiuzzaman became enraged after discovering Mrs Thandi was in love with a man in Pakistan whom she had met on Facebook, named in court as only as Majid. Badiuzzaman duped his wife into getting into the car with him on the premise of taking her to work, but instead he drove her around for three hours and threatened her. He said he had a hammer in his car boot and that if she did not revoke the order against him she would never see her son again, and that police would ‘find parts of her body in bits in bin bags’. Mrs Thandi pleaded with her solicitors to revoke the order, and they proceeded to call the police. Badiuzzaman was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and unlawful imprisonment. While being cautioned he made no comment and grinned at police, but he was later released. +2 Jailed: Badiuzzaman, 34, strangled his pregnant wife Sabeen Thandi to death after police arrested him for threatening her with a hammer In the early hours of July 7 police received two silent 999 calls from the home the couple had shared and were met by Badiuzzaman at the door who said his wife was at work. He was calm and made conversation with officers but when they searched the property they found her lifeless body under a duvet in the bedroom. Badiuzzaman told police: ‘I’ve killed my wife.’ But when paramedics asked him to tell them what he had done so that they might attempt to save her, he said he did not know. Mrs Thandi was taken to Newham University Hospital where she was confirmed dead, and a post-mortem gave the cause of death as strangulation. Before the killing he had told colleagues he intended to ‘stab’ Mrs Thandi and had talked for an hour about high-profile domestic violence murder cases of Oscar Pistorius and Shrien Dewani. He told colleagues ‘they have got away with it’ and ‘jail in Britain is easy peasy’. Sentencing Judge Moss said: ‘From all that I’ve heard about you I have no doubt that you are a manipulative, devious and controlling person with a serious anger management issue. ‘It’s clear from the way in which she died that you intended that she should die. You strangled her in her bedroom in her own home.’ He added: ‘You murdered your estranged wife in her own home which you were excluded from by order of the county court. ‘It’s clear from the evidence in the case that this was an order you deserved and which you had no respect for, indeed you resented it. ‘You have deprived those children of the love and care of their mother in their formative years of their lives. You had no conceivable defence.’ The judge said he took into some account the fact that the defendant had pleaded guilty one day before the case was listed, and that he had shown some remorse, but added: ‘I suspect you feel sorrier for yourself than those affected by your actions.’ Officer in the case, Detective Inspector Euan McKeeve said: ‘We are very satisfied with the outcome of the case. Domestic violence in all its forms is totally abhorrent and cannot be tolerated. There’s likely to be some learning from the IPCC investigation, but because that investigation is ongoing I am unable to comment further at this time.’ Hertfordshire Police and the Met Police are now being investigated by the IPCC in relation to the incident. An IPCC spokesman said: ‘The investigation is nearing conclusion, with most lines of enquiry completed by investigators. ‘We have interviewed ten officers and a civilian staff member from the Metropolitan Police Service under misconduct caution, in relation to their contact with Mrs Thandi prior to her death on 7 July 2013. Two officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary have also been interviewed under misconduct caution, in relation to their contact with Mrs Thandi on 19 June 2013. ‘We have also taken statements from several independent witnesses, and are keeping the family updated on the progress of our investigation.’

  18. The best friend of a UK businessman who went missing in India has been named by police as a suspect in his murder. Hotelier Ranjit Singh Power, from Wolverhampton, disappeared while on a business trip to Punjab last year. A taxi driver has confessed to his murder, but police in India want to arrest his business partner, Baldev Singh Deol, also of Wolverhampton, who is thought to be in the UK. Mr Power's family say they want answers about his final days and justice. Despite Interpol issuing an arrest warrant, an extradition notice submitted to the Indian Central Bureau for Investigation has not been processed, meaning police officers in England have not yet been asked to act. Mr Power, who ran the Park Hall Hotel in Wolverhampton, was last seen at an airport in Amritsar on 8 May 2015. He was reported missing when he did not contact his family for a week. Taxi driver Sukhdev Singh, who was arrested in Punjab last May, remains in custody. BBC's India correspondent Sanjoy Majumder previously said local detectives believed he was acting at the behest of someone else which may have something to do with Mr Power's business dealings in India and the UK. Mr Deol, a Power family friend of 30 years, is believed to be in the UK, Punjab Police said. His arrest warrant has been featured on Interpol's website. Police in the West Midlands say they have not had any approach from police in India for assistance. Mr Power's brother, Amrik Singh Power, said although he was frustrated by the delay in extradition, he felt "relieved" over the Indian police efforts. "What started off as anger and then frustration, is kind of like relief," he said. "It's not going to bring my brother back. We didn't have a funeral, we didn't have Ranjit's body. "But at least with some answers as to why he went out there, we feel relieved that we are nearly there." Local police have yet to find the 54-year-old's body but are treating his death as murder. In October, his daughter said a body returned to the UK by Punjab police was not her father's. The corpse, found in an Indian river, was initially thought to be that of Mr Power but DNA and dental analysis ruled out a match. Amrik Singh Powar, of Punjab Police, said: "The offence was committed here, but they are citizens from the UK. So both countries [are] involved in this case. "I am confident it will be moving to a conclusion now." West Midlands Police said it would "assist with any inquiries should a request be made." The Foreign Office said it was providing support to Mr Power's family. The Home Office would not comment on whether an extradition request had been made. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-37230293

  20. Forest Gate man murdered pregnant wife in a fit of rage Mohammed Badiuzzaman has admitted killling Sabeen Thandi Kay Atwal, Chief Reporter Tuesday, May 6, 2014 3:53 PM A controlling man who strangled his pregnant wife, leaving her three children without a mother, has pleaded guilty to her murder at the Old Bailey today. Sabeen Thandi's body was found at her Forest Gate home on July 7 last year Mohammed Badiuzzaman, 35, a security guard of no fixed abode, murdered Sabeen Thandi in a fit of rage on July 7 last year after discovering that she had begun a relationship with someone else. Mohammed Badiuzzaman began a relationship with Sabeen Thandi, 37, in November 2012 and moved into her property in January 2013. He became controlling and forced her to wear a hijab. In April 2013 he pressured her into an Islamic marriage. He even tried to sell her home by pretending he was the owner to estate agents. He refused to let her go out on her own and would not let her travel to and from work as a doctors receptionist. By June 14 2013 she had had enough of Mohammed and visited a solicitors in Watford. Three days later, Watford County Court put in place a non-molestation order against Mohammed preventing him from entering the her home in Disraeli Road, Forest Gate. She feared for her safety and the safety of her three children. Two days later Mohammed forced her to revoke the order, telling her she would never see her son again if she did not. When it became clear that Sabeen Thandi had been forced to attend the solicitors office they called police. Mohammed Badiuzzaman was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and unlawful imprisonment. He was later released. In the early hours of July 7 last year officers were called to Disraeli Road after an abandoned call was made from the address. Mohammed Badiuzzaman answered the door and told officers there was only himself and his daughter in the address. When officers entered the property and asked Mohammed where the children’s mother was, he said she had not returned from work. Officers found her lifeless body in a bedroom. She had been strangled. Mohammed was arrested for her murder. Detective Inspector Euan McKeeve said: “Mohammed learnt that Sabeen had begun a relationship with someone else and murdered his wife in a fit of rage. “This tragedy has left three children without a loving mother in the prime of her life.” He is due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on May 27. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the actions of officers from the MPS as well as Hertfordshire Police.
  21. Two men have been found guilty of murdering a grandmother who was left to die in a shop basement. Mohammed Islam, 29, from Gillingham, and Murshed Miah, 38, from Maidstone, attacked Harjit Chaggar at the store in Chatham, Kent, last September. They were also found guilty of preventing Mrs Chaggar's lawful burial, along with Abdul Hannan, 44, from Maidstone, and Rasad Miah, of Chatham, Hannan was found not guilty of murder. The men denied all of the charges. Mrs Chaggar's body was only found 12 days after she went missing because of the smell, Canterbury Crown Court heard. 'Motive unclear' Islam worked as a butcher at the store in Luton Road at the time Mrs Chaggar disappeared on 2 September. Jurors heard Mrs Chaggar's badly decomposed body was concealed in a bin bag under the floor boards and her injuries were consistent with being thrown into the basement while still alive. Nigel Pilkington, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said the motive for the murder was unclear. He said some of Mrs Chaggar's belongings were missing and so the most probable motive was robbery. Abdur Rohim, who used to cook at the food store, gave evidence from Bangladesh by video link. Murshed Miah, Abdul Hannan and Mohammed Liakat Islam all denied murder He told the court he never met Mrs Chaggar, but said in the days leading up to the discovery of the body, there had been "a horrible smell" in the shop. Mr Rohim said staff lit incense sticks to get rid of it. 'Callous' Sani Globe was described in court as a grocery shop and a butchers which supplied local restaurants. Jurors heard Hannan and his brother Murshed Miah ran the business while Rasad Miah worked in the shop along with Mr Islam. CCTV captured Mrs Chaggar walking through Chatham Judge Adele Williams praised the dignity of Mrs Chaggar's family and the police investigation. However, shouting from the gallery, Hannan's wife said: "You've not been just. My husband is innocent." Det Supt Rob Vinson, from Kent Police, said the men's silence meant he was unable to tell Mrs Chaggar's family exactly how and why she was attacked and left to die. Nigel Pilkington, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "The defendants all knew... how she came to be killed and why. "The denials of her murder and their collective attempts to hide the truth were particularly callous and aggravated further by the fact that they left her to die." Her son Kuldish Chaggar said: "We pray that she is now at peace and can give us the strength to carry on without her no matter what obstacles are placed in our way, for none can be bigger than losing her. "We remember the good times, the smiles and laughter of a loved and treasured mother and grandmother who had so many hopes and plans for the future." The men are due to be sentenced on 20 May. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-27326538
  22. Murder hunt on after father pushed under truck while fighting off a gang of robbers Murder scene: Forensic officers in Barking Picture: Nigel Howard A murder hunt was launched today after a businessman was pushed into the path of a lorry while fighting off a gang of robbers. Father-of-two Shammi Atwal, 44, was shoved into the road as he struggled against a group of up to ten raiders armed with a sledgehammer and metal bars. The attempted robbery at his company, Glenn & Co drinks warehouse in Barking, took place at around 10.20 am yesterday. The company boss died after the impact with the truck and a post mortem is due to be held later today. Death: Shammi Atwal, 44, was shoved into the road in the path of a truck His wife, Deepa who witnessed the raid, suffered minor injuries and was said by family to be "devastated". Detectives paid tribute to the bravery of Mr Atwal saying he was defending his wife and his business. They are appealing for information on the gang, described as white men, who were armed with a sledgehammer and metal bars. Mr Atwal’s uncle Tarsem Singh, 65, described his nephew today as an "honourable hard working family man." He said: "He worked very very hard and the rest of the time was spent with his family or at the Seikh temple. "He had a good business because he was dedicated. He did charity work at the Seikh temples in Ilford and Barking. He would help anyone out. He will be so missed by so many people. He was very honourable and one of the nicest people you could meet and a wonderful father." Mr Atwal's friends today spoke of their shock while paying tribute to his heroism. Friend and former colleague, Sohan Hare, 65, said: “I’m very shocked, horrified and sad that a good man like this, who was trying to do the right thing, has gone. "He was a very hard worker for his family who was a very close friend and this is so unfortunate. He was loved by everyone.“It’s absolutely terrible. He was a very energetic, very peaceful and a very decent man who would help anybody and everybody in the community.” He added: “Some people went there who then tried to rob them, then there was a fight between the two sides, between the robbers and the people who were in [Glenn and Co], and the fight went from inside to outside. He (Mr Atwal) was pushed into the road and into the lorry. It was about ten people who tried to rob it I think.” Investigation: Police at the scene in Barking Picture: Nigel Howard Mr Atwal, from Manor Road, Chigwell, has a daughter and son, aged four and seven. He co-owned Glenn and Co, a wholesale distributor of beers, wines, ales and snacks, and supplies several local pubs, for seven years. Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: “This was a man trying to stop thieves robbing his business. “He acted bravely in defence of his wife and managed to chase the robbers from his premises only for him to be pushed in front of a moving lorry. “People in the community know who committed this appalling and cowardly crime and I would urge them to contact my officers.” Alan Suleyman, a neighbouring trader, said: “He got robbed, then he got run over, which I heard happened after [Mr Atwal] went after one of the robbers. It’s absolutely shocking. We have had robberies here before but this is unbelievable.” Another trader, who wished not to be named, said: “I drove past not so long after it happened and there was a guy laying under the back of a lorry behind lots of police, so that’s when I knew it was really bad.” They were unable to confirm if the robbers escaped with any stock. It is understood that Mrs Atwal's purse was taken. There have been no arrests. A cordon was set up with the road remaining closed until late last night. Witnesses should call 020 8345 1570 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
  23. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-22795703 Old news, but still... Kulwant Singh Grewal: Indian police investigate London man's murder By Poonam TanejaBBC Asian Network Indian police are investigating the murder of a London grandfather in Punjab. The body of Kulwant Singh Grewal, 76, from Southall, west London, was found in a village near the city of Ludhiana, northern India, on 30 May. Mr Grewal had gone to India to settle a property dispute in the Punjab courts and he was last seen alive on 16 May. His family in the UK became concerned after he missed a court appearance and alerted police. 'We want justice' Mr Grewal's son Iqbal Grewal, who lives in Berkshire, said: "My mother phoned me on my mobile and said to me, 'They've just found his body'. "I just cried to myself." His family said the grandfather-of-two was stabbed to death. Mr Grewal's wife Mukhtiar Grewal has travelled to India to search for answers. "Why would anyone want to attack a 76-year-old man?" said Mr Grewal "We now want justice. "That's the only thing that will make me feel whole again. "They've taken a part of me away, whoever has done this - if they can serve life in prison for this, at least I'll get some closure." The Indian police have confirmed a murder investigation has been launched but have given no further details. No arrests have been made. Kulwant Singh Grewal, a commercial landlord, emigrated to the UK from Singapore in 1959. Although he had lived and worked in London since then, he was not a British citizen but held a Singapore passport. However, his son believes the British authorities should help. "He should be treated as a British citizen. "He has worked here and paid taxes, the British government should be helping." The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it could not help as Mr Grewal was not a British national. But it said it had given the family a list of approved lawyers that could take up its case. http://www.tribuneindia.com/2013/20130606/ldh1.htm Blind murder of NRI cracked His millionaire brother owning a mega pizza chain in United Kingdom booked Mohit Khanna Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 5 The city police today claimed to have cracked the blind murder of a 75-year-old NRI, Kulwant Singh Grewal, with the arrest of his 62-year-old millionaire younger brother Jaswant Singh Grewal in this connection today. Kulwant's mutilated body was found in a house located at Mehma Singh Wala village, near here, on May 30. It was a well-planned murder. After perpetrating the crime, the accused left the village and had stayed in Malaysia for nearly four weeks. The investigating officer said it was an alibi by Jawant Singh to make the police believe that he was somewhere else when the incident took place. According to the police, an old dispute between the two brothers led to Kulwant's murder. After migrating from Singapore, the Grewal family had settled in the United Kingdom. Jaswant Singh, his brother Charanjit Singh and the victim Kulwant Singh had a flourishing businesses in the UK. Jaswant's family owns a mega pizza chain in the UK. Insiders said Kulwant and Jaswant had been at loggerheads for the past 20 years. Earlier, they used to indulge in character assassination of each other's wives. They had become a laughing stock among their relatives in the UK and in the village. For the past four years, they had been fighting a legal battle over a piece of ancestral land. Kulwant had returned from the UK and started living in the house at Mehma Singh Wala village. Jaswant was fed up with repeated visits to India to attend hearing in the case. Jaswant claimed that the house was built by him and his brother Charanjit Singh. And Kulwant Singh, who had taken his share from the ancestral property long ago, and taken illegal possession of the piece of land. Owing to litigation, Kulwant had to spend some days in jail. After coming out of the jail, Kulwant had threatened Jaswant that he would send the latter and his wife to jail as well. On May 16 afternoon, Jaswant entered Kulwant's room and allegedly killed him with a sharp weapon. He dumped the weapon in the canal. On May 22, he flew to Malaysia thinking that when the villagers would come to know about the body, he would be abroad, thus no one would suspect his involvement in the murder. The villagers came to know about the body after 14 days, i.e. on May 30. Gurpreet Singh Sikand, ACP, Gill, said: "He cracked soon and confessed to killing his elder brother. Jaswant Singh has been arrested and efforts are on to locate the weapon used in the crime. Jaswant has allegedly confessed before the police that he had thrown the weapon into the Sidhwan Canal from Jassowal Bridge. Special divers have been deployed to locate the weapon." Arresting Jaswant was not an easy task as he is a UK citizen and enjoys a considerable political clout, the official said. http://www.tribuneindia.com/2013/20130611/ldh1.htm Wife's role under scanner Mohit Khanna Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 10 In the Kulwant Singh murder case, the role of his wife Mukhtiar Kaur has come under the scanner after she appeared as a witness in the case. Kulwant Singh (75), an NRI, was allegedly killed by his younger brother Jaswant Singh (62) on May 16 at a house in Mehma Singh Wala village near Dehlon. Jaswant was recently arrested in this connection. Mukhtiar Kaur had told the police that her husband Kulwant Singh was apprehending a danger to his life from his brother Jaswant Singh, also an NRI, who owns a mega pizza chain in the UK. According to Satinder Singh, SHO of the Dehlon police station, Mukhtiar Kaur had reportedly told the police that she received a call from Kulwant a few days before the murder during which he had mentioned about a threat to his life from Jaswant. However, investigations revealed that Mukhtiar and Kulwant had strained relations and were living separately, a fact highlighted by the accused, Jaswant Singh, during the investigations. Investigating officer Swarn Singh said, "Jaswant told us that Kulwant and Mulhtiar Kaur were living separately and recently divorced each other. However, no evidence was found that the couple had divorced." Jaswant's two sons attended Kulwant Singh's bhog ceremony at a gurdwara in Mehma Singh Wala village yesterday. This had raised many an eyebrow in the village. An elderly resident said on condition of anonymity that the murder case would head for a compromise. "Mukhtiar Kaur, who stays in the UK, is not going to pursue the case. With the passage of time, the case will weaken and Jaswant will be let off. Both Mukhtiar and Kulwant had strained relations. It can be gauged from the fact that Kulwant's body kept lying dumped in a room for nearly 15 days and Mukhtiar did not bother to ask anyone about her husband's whereabouts," said the resident. Jaswant was today produced before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days. Officer refutes charges Investigating officer refuted the allegations that the accused, Jaswant. was given a VIP treatment. He said Jaswant was not made to sit in an AC room. He said the accused was not taken to the District Courts complex in a swanky SUV as alleged A peep into the case * On June 5, the city police had arrested 62-year-old Jaswant Singh Grewal, a millionaire, for allegedly murdering his elder brother Kulwant Singh (75). A property dispute was stated to be the reason behind the murder. * Kulwant was allegedly killed by Jaswant at a house in Mehma Singh Wala village on May 16. On May 30, his mutilated body was found from the house. * In order to hoodwink the police, the accused fled to Malaysia on May 22 for four days. He flew to Malaysia to use his visit as an alibi to make the police believe that he was somewhere else when the incident took place
