  1. Last Updated: Friday, 5 December, 2003, 13:31 GMT E-mail this to a friend Printable version Reunion heals partition wounds By Zulfiqar Ali BBC correspondent in Muzaffarabad Harbans Kore hugs daughter Zeenat Bibi at the reunion A 77-year-old Indian woman who has had two homelands, two husbands and two religions has finally brought her family together after decades of separation. "My wish was to see my children again once in my lifetime and my wish has come true," said Harbans Kore at the family reunion in Pakistan. Ms Kore, a Sikh, had travelled from the Indian city of Ahmedabad to meet the Muslim son and daughter she had not seen for more than 40 years. Ms Kore's story began at the time of the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947. She and her husband were Kashmiri Sikhs living in the village of Pataika, 16 kilometres (11 miles) north-east of Muzaffarabad in what is now Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. Tensions between Muslims and those Hindus and Sikhs still living in the area were such that after a few years Ms Kore's husband fled to India. I wish she could stay with us but she cannot because she has to go back. She has a family there also Zeenat Bibi, daughter She was left behind. Assuming the husband had gone forever, Ms Kore converted to Islam, marrying a Muslim man named Hadayatullah. Together they had a son, Manzoor Hussein Awan, and a daughter, Zeenat Bibi. But in the mid-1950s, Ms Kore was forced to leave for India under an agreement between Islamabad and Delhi to reunite women with their original families. That was when her separation from daughter Zeenat and son Manzoor began. In India, Ms Kore re-converted to Sikhism and had another two daughters and a son with her first husband. Telephone contact For many years, the members of the divided family did not know of each other's whereabouts or even if they were alive. Then seven years ago Zeenat, now 53, and her brother, 48, found out through a relative that their mother was still alive. Brothers in arms Dalveer Singh and Manzoor Hussein Awan "It was just two years ago that we were able to locate her telephone number and then we spoke by telephone, wrote letters and exchanged pictures," said Zeenat. The family wanted to meet immediately but heightened tension between the now nuclear rivals India and Pakistan prevented it. It was not until the recent thaw and the resumption of a bus service between the Pakistani city of Lahore and India's capital, Delhi, in July that their dreams were realised. Ms Kore finally crossed back into Pakistan last week, accompanied by her Sikh son, Dalveer Singh, and her daughter-in-law. They were greeted by Zeenat and Manzoor, along with grandchildren and other family members, at the Wagah border crossing. One of Ms Kore's Sikh daughters joined the reunion this week, along with the daughter's husband and own daughter. Ancestral village Ms Kore said: "It is lovely to see my children after all these years. I am lucky to see my son and daughter and my grandchildren again after such a long time and I feel so happy." Until seven years ago the divided family had had no contact Ms Kore and other family members are staying with her family in Muzaffarabad until the middle of December. But one person Ms Kore could not be reunited with was her Muslim husband - he died two years after she left for India. Ms Kore wants to show her ancestral village to her Indian children but is not sure if the authorities in Muzaffarabad will allow her to go there. Zeenat said: "We know how we suffered all these years and how badly we missed our mother. I wish she could stay with us but she cannot because she has to go back. She has a family there also." Her only other regret was that her mother could not attend the wedding of her son last October. She invited the family but they could not get the visas or bus tickets in time. Manzoor said of the reunion: "We have been deprived of our mother's love and affection for more than four decades and now we are so happy to meet our mother and family. "It is the first time in my life I have found this happiness. Everybody is happy - my wife, my children, my sister and every member of our family that we are together again." Have any people here got relatives in pakistan?

The last rites of Supinder Kour—the slain principal of a government school in Eidgah locality of the city —were performed on Friday amidst a protest by members of the Sikh community here. The funeral was performed by the family and relatives at a cremation ground in Karan Nagar area here. Hundreds of members of the community assembled at the residence of Kour in Aloochi Bagh area and took out a protest march from there, carrying her mortal remains on a stretcher. The protesting members of the community covered the distance from Aloochi Bagh to Jehangir Chowk on foot, shouting slogans demanding justice for the victim shot dead by militants at the school along with her colleague Deepak Chand. The police tried to persuade the protesters to stop their march, but to no avail. They marched towards the Civil Secretariat, the seat of the Jammu and Kashmir government, and held a silent sit-in there. The community members said the protest march and the sit-in was held to demand justice for Kour. Later, the family members took Kour's mortal remains to the cremation ground where her last rites were held.

Sikh politician Majinder Singh Sirsa gestures during a news conference in Srinagar [Shuaib Bashir/Al Jazeera] By Rifat Fareed 1 Jul 2021 Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir – For more than a week now, a section of the minority Sikh community in Indian-administered Kashmir has been protesting against what they call the “forced conversion” of two women who married Muslim men – a claim denied by police officials and the men’s families who say the unions are interfaith marriages. Manmeet Kaur, a 19-year-old Sikh woman, and her 29-year-old partner Shahid Nazir Bhat, both residents of the Muslim-majority region’s main city of Srinagar, fled their homes on June 21, according to their families and the police. KEEP READING Twitter faces new case for child pornography after India map row India says two drones intercepted over Kashmir army base India’s Hindu calligrapher whose art adorns more than 200 mosques India’s Cipla gets nod to distribute Moderna’s COVID vaccine After the woman’s family filed a complaint, Bhat was charged with kidnapping the Sikh woman. Police officials told Al Jazeera the couple turned themselves in on June 24 and have been detained in different police stations in Srinagar. Two days later, Manmeet gave her statement to a judge in a Srinagar court, denying her family’s allegation that Bhat kidnapped her. Officials said the two married in an Islamic ceremony held in secret after Manmeet converted and changed her name to Zoya. As she was giving her statement before the judge, scores of Sikh community members, along with Manmeet’s parents, gathered outside the court premises, demanding that she be handed over to the family. That evening, Manmeet was handed over to her parents by the police, while Bhat remains in custody. The next day, June 27, hundreds of Sikhs gathered in Srinagar, alleging that two women from the community had been “forcefully converted” to Islam, triggering tensions in a region where Sikhs and Muslims have been living in harmony for centuries. Making up about 2 percent of the population in Indian-administered Kashmir, the Sikhs are a significant minority who did not leave the restive region despite decades of armed rebellion against the Indian rule. Most Sikhs live in villages in Kashmir’s volatile south and north, where the conflict is most intense. ‘In love for 15 years’ The other Sikh woman at the centre of the ongoing storm is 29-year-old Danmeet Kour, who has been in love with her high school classmate, a 30-year-old Muslim named Muzaffar Shaban for 15 years now. In a telephone interview with Al Jazeera, Danmeet said she married Shaban in June 2014. “I had converted to Islam in 2012, two years before I married my boyfriend. It was the wish of both of us, no one forced me. It was my decision because the Indian constitution grants me this right to choose my partner,” she told Al Jazeera. Danmeet, who has a master’s degree in political science, said she left home on June 6 to live with Shaban, telling her family not to look for her as she was now going to live with her husband. But her family went to the police and the couple was traced within two hours, she said. Shaban was arrested on kidnapping charges and Danmeet handed over to her parents. Danmeet said her family took her to Punjab, the Sikh-majority state in India’s west, where she alleged that “multiple groups met her and tried to influence her decision and forced her to give a statement against her husband”. “I received death threats. But I told those folks in Punjab, my family and everyone else that I will only record my statement before a judge in the court,” Danmeet told Al Jazeera. For nearly a month now, Shaban has been in a jail in Srinagar. After her return from Punjab, Danmeet was presented to a local court on June 26 where she gave a statement saying her family had falsely charged her husband with kidnapping and she should be provided police protection. “I just want to live with my in-laws and did not want to go back to my parents,” she told the court. ‘Forceful marriage’ with man from community For more than a week now, the two interfaith marriages have triggered protests and news briefings by Sikh groups and political leaders. Some Sikh activists accuse the Muslim men of converting the Sikh women at “gunpoint” and are demanding an “anti-conversion” law and a ban on interfaith marriages. Dozens of the members of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) – a Sikh-centric political party – including former Delhi-based legislator, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, arrived in the region and accused Kashmiri Muslim men of “forcefully converting Sikh girls”. In a news conference on Monday, Sirsa, who is who is also the Delhi spokesman for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) – a Sikh religious group that manages temples – claimed Manmeet was a “minor” who was “forcefully married to a 60-year-old-man”. On Tuesday, Sirsa announced that Manmeet had been married “with her will” to a man from their community, named Sukhbir Singh. He shared photographs showing Manmeet, in traditional dress, with her “Sikh husband” and other men at a Sikh temple. But so far, Manmeet has said nothing about whether or not she was married to a Sikh man and, if so, if she had been forced into it. Meanwhile, feminists and activists across India have criticised her “forceful marriage” and demanded action against those who arranged it. ‘Communal divide’ Sikh leaders in Indian-administered Kashmir, however, caution that non-local community leaders such as Sirsa, who is close to the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are using the controversy to create a “communal divide and hatred in the region”. While Jagmohan Singh Raina, a local Sikh leader, has demanded a law to ban “forceful conversions”, he also feels “outsiders are trying to exploit the situation between the two communities in the region”. Raina speaking at a news conference on June 30 in Srinagar [Shuaib Bashir/Al Jazeera] “Our children who go to study outside (Kashmir), they also marry in other faiths. But we want an anti-conversion law. It is for Muslims as well as Sikhs and other communities. This act is needed here, we demand it for all,” he told Al Jazeera. “But I am also cautioning that some people want to defame Kashmir through this incident and play politics over it. We will not allow any division between Muslims and Sikhs.” A law against interfaith marriages is already in force in the BJP-ruled northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, whose hardline Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is known for his anti-Muslim hate speeches. In November last year, the state also became the first to pass a legislation banning “unlawful conversions” by force, fraudulent means or marriage. That law was brought into force after some Muslim men in India were accused of “love jihad”, an Islamophobic conspiracy theory propagated for more than 10 years by India’s right-wing Hindu groups that accuse Muslims of luring Hindu women into marriages to forcefully convert them to Islam. But activists say interfaith marriages are permitted in the country’s constitution and women should be free to choose who they want to marry. In February this year, a controversy erupted over the marriage of an inter-caste couple in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. The couple approached the Supreme Court, which upheld the right of adults to choose their partners and said “it is time society learns to accept inter-caste and interfaith marriages without hounding the couples”. “Interfaith marriages are as old as the institution of marriage,” rights activist Sanam Sutirath Wazir, based in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Jammu city, told Al Jazeera. “’Love jihad’ is nothing but an anti-minority political idea to interfere in an individual’s life and choices,” he said, adding that it can make people targets of right-wing vigilante groups. Wazir said the “political intervention in matters related to love and marriage” has created a “social constitution for women in which their agency is compromised”. Meanwhile, at Bhat’s home in Srinagar, his family members say he was married to a Muslim woman in 2012 with whom he has a six-year-old daughter. They divorced after two years of marriage and Bhat has been in a relationship with Manmeet since. “On June 21, he left home in the morning for a walk. Two days later, police visited us and then we came to know that he is in detention,” one of his aunts, who did not want to be named, told Al Jazeera. “We knew he had a love affair going on. We visited the woman’s home as well once to tell them. But we did not know this would become big,” another family member said. “We don’t want to say anything more. Let him come out of jail.” Danmeet, who lives about 10km (6 miles) away from the Bhats, says she is “feeling threatened and wants to live in peace”. She only has one question for “all those who are protesting and making false stories” about her marriage: “Why can’t they leave an adult woman to make a decision for herself?” SOURCE: AL JAZEERA

  12. ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖਾਲਸਾ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫਤਿਹ Rs 40 Lakh flat for Kashmiri Pandits in Srinagar By Aman Sharma, ET Bureau | 30 Dec, 2014, 08.10AM IST NEW DELHI: Kashmiri Pandits would be provided with "good quality" 1,000 apartments built at a cost of Rs 40 lakh each near Srinagar, a far cry from the shabby two-room transit accommodation provided to them in Jammu, to motivate them to return to J&K. The government is also reaching out to the other refugees in J&K, the 5764 families who migrated from West Pakistan to Jammu Division and still do not have voting rights in the State Assembly though they have the same in the Parliamentary elections. A senior Home Ministry official said a letter has recently been sent to the state to expedite the process of granting these persons the Permanent Resident Right in J&K so that they can vote in the next state elections, buy property in the state and get recruited to state services and jobs. "The Kashmiri Pandits were quite unhappy with the two room tenements built for them near Jammu which were only meant to be transit accommodation. Learning from that experience, the new apartments will be of a good quality and each will cost Rs 40 lakhs. The NBCC has approved the architecture and design of the said flats and will construct the same," the official said. Jobs with monthly salaries up to Rs 30,000 and an Rs 10 lakh grant for those who want to rebuild their damaged houses is also a part of the package. "Rs 500 crore was provided in this year's budget for rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. A bulk of it will be spent on building the new 1000 flats near Srinagar," the official said.

  14. Forty-four cremations in the last 48 hours and the villagers in Rajpur Bhatta are still looking for the dead. On September 4, when they gathered at the house of Sukwinder Singh to join his baraat, no one imagined that his three-year-long love story with Jatinder Kour from nearby Laam would have such an end. They had travelled barely 2 km from home when Sukwinder, 24, was dead and so were 63 others in his wedding procession, after their bus fell into the swollen Jhameerh nullah which falls en route. Five days later, the hunt for the remaining 20 is still on, with local villagers forming groups to search the nullah waters from Jhameerh to Beri Pattan, right along the Line of Control (LoC). Carrying long bamboo sticks and ropes, they venture in and, at places, even dive under to ensure they dont miss anything. The bodies are being discovered by Army troops near the LoC even at Palanwalla in Akhnoor tehsil near Jammu, 65 km away, where these appear to have been washed up by the Chenab from the side of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Since Sunday, troops of Akhnoor-based 10 Division have found three bodies, including that of one-and-a-half-year-old Harneet, on the Chenab banks. The Jhameerh nullah merges with Nowshera nullah and flows into PoK from Beri Pattan in Rajouri district on the Indian side of the LoC. After nearly 1 km, it flows back to the Indian side to join the Chenab in Palanwalla area. Daljit Singh, an ex-serviceman, has come to Nonial from Upper Nonial near Nowshera in search of his brother-in-law Manmohan Singh. Let the body of someones relative be found, if not ours, he says. Many families have been completely wiped out, says Harbans Singh, a forest guard, adding that there is no household in the village which is not in mourning. Sukhwinder, who worked as a daily wager with the Postal Department, and Jatinder, an 18-year-old college student, met three years ago. They both travelled to Nowshera every day and met on local matadors or buses. A year ago, their relationship became serious when both joined the same computer coaching institute at Nowshera. Their families were already related to each other, and a match was quickly arranged. Sukhwinder had even begun construction of his own separate house to settle down after marriage. His father Bhagat Singh says the two decided everything about the place, right from the architecture and the colour of the walls to the putty on the ceilings and curtains, exchanging photographs on WhatsApp. As she wanted a particular design for curtains, these were purchased from Rajouri, 45 km away, Bhagat Singh says. An inverter bought by Sukhwinder to install in the new house is yet to arrive because of the rains. On September 4, the baraatis had waited for nearly three hours for the rains to stop, before over 200 of them decided to leave for Laam in three buses and some light motor vehicles around 11 am. Sukhwinder, along with his friends and some wedding material, was in the first car, says his elder brother Darbara Singh. On finding the Jhameerh in spate and water flowing over a bridge that falls en route, Sukhwinder came out of the car. His uncle and friends drove through and reached the other side of the nullah, says Darbara. Seeing them go through safely, the baraatis asked Sukhwinder to get into the bus just behind. However, he decided to wait for it to pass as well. When that too crossed safely, Sukhwinder got into the next bus. By then, this bus had over 70 people, as people travelling in their cars and two-wheelers had also boarded it because of the incessant rains. The bus had reached the middle of the bridge when its front wheel, on the drivers side, went into a deep crater and lost balance. The bus fell into the nullah. Those watching the bus jumped in and pulled out four people through the windows, while three others swam to safety on their own. Armyman Rattan Singh had come home from Pathankot on September 3 night for the wedding. He along with his wife Amrit Kaur and daughter, Harneet, were among the dead. The body of his wife is still missing. Another Army personnel, Swarn Singh, had come on five-day leave from Arunachal Pradesh for the marriage along with wife Ranbir Kaur and daughters Gurmeet, 3, and Tanya, who was just one-and-a-half month old. Ranbir and his daughters had got out of a car in which they were travelling to board the ill-fated bus. Now, Swarn is looking for their bodies. The entire border road, including the bridge, is maintained by the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF). The crater had been there for the last few years, with local people drawing attention of GREF officials towards it from time to time, but to no avail, says Harpreet Kaur. Since the accident, however, the crater has been filled up by the GREF. Two days later, 13 bodies, including that of Sukhwinder, were pulled out of the bus, which was brought to the bank with the help of cranes by Army troops after water level in the nullah went down. Thirty-one others were found floating at different places, right up to Chammb-Jourian in Akhnoor near Jammu. While police confirmed 64 deaths, villagers put the number between 70-80, saying that there was no count of infants and minor children sitting in their parents lap. The police, Army and local villagers have jointly formed groups to look for the bodies. The authorities across the LoC in PoK and Army troops of the Akhnoor-based 10 Division have been informed as well, said Nowsheras Additional SP Rakesh Kumar. While the police have registered a case, they do not know whether to blame the driver who is among the dead or the GREF engineers for the negligence. Congress legislator Ravinder Sharma says GREF engineers are responsible and a case should be registered against them. None of the ministers from Chief Minister Omar Abdullahs cabinet have visited the relatives of the victims so far. DCP Shantmanu and IGP Rajesh Kumar visited Rajpur Bhatta and announced Rs 1.5 lakh ex gratia relief from the state government for the relatives of the deceased. The village has over 350 families, majority them Sikh, who are otherwise a minority in the state. They have been ‘charged’ with celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in a recent cricket match. The students were expelled on March 03. “You cannot pass judgments against your own national team,” Manzoor Ahmed, vice chancellor of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) reportedly said explaining the decision to remove the students. “Their behavior was not conducive to peace on the campus. It creates bad blood with the local boys”, the V-C reportedly added. As per recent reports the police has booked these Kashmiri students with ‘sedition’. “A group of Kashmiri students at a private college in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, have been booked for sedition after they cheered Pakistan during a cricket match that India lost”, NDTV reported on March 06. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister (CM) Omar Abdullah has expressed covens over the developments in this matter. “Have just spoken to CM UP who has assured me he will personally look in to the matter of the Kashmiri students in Meerut ,” tweeted CM Omar Abdullah, who described the charges against as “unacceptably harsh punishment that will ruin their futures & will further alienate them.” However, Omar Abdullah described the students as “misguided” and said they should “introspect” because some of them were attending college on the strength of scholarships from the Indian Prime Minister. The college has alleged that the students celebrated loudly in the dorm and raised pro-Pakistan slogans, which led to a fight with other students and escalated into vandalism and stone-throwing. The students were suspended and sent home almost immediately. Some of them have returned to Jammu and Kashmir and others are staying with friends. They say the college first told them they were suspended for three days, but has since not allowed them back. As per reports no action was taken against any ‘local’ students with whom Kashmiri students were said to have come in altercation. Bolo Bharat Mata ke jai lol
