100 desert Taksal over maryada dispute

Sunday 17th April, 2005

Amritsar (KP) - Over 100 followers of DamDami Taksal left on Thursday saying that Taksal was going against Panthic norms. They alleged that jathedars had beaten them when they spoke out against the chaliha (forty day purification) that is currently hapenning on Taksal grounds.

The Singhs who left pleaded with Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti of Akal Takht Sahib to summon Taksal jathedar Baba Harnam Singh Jee "Bhindrawale" (previously Dhumma) for going against Panthic maryada, or code of conduct. The "chaliha" started on April 1st and will end on May 11th.

Senior Jathedars of Taksal, such as Bhai Ajaib Singh Abhinasi, claim that the "chaliha" is an old maryada of Taksal and should be revived. He denied all allegations of havans, hindu worship rituals involving sacred fires, taking place during this event. Bhai Abhinasi said the maryada is based on books written by Baba Kartar Singh Khalsa Bhindrawale and Baba Gurbachan Singh Khalsa Bhindrawale-both previous jathedars of Taksal.

Jathedar Amrik Singh, the leader of those who left Taksal, said in a press conference that many of them were beaten up and told to leave Taksal on the spot. While they were sent out, others left on their own. Bhai Abhinasi admitted that the Singhs were beaten for their objections.

The Singhs that left said that most older members of Taksal are frustrated with practices being adopted by the new Jathedar.
