Written by a fellow GurSikh, bhai Anmol Singh from Mumbai, India

I am a constant watcher of the Discovery and National Geographic

Channels. I learn a lot by observation then reading. One thing very common I

observed in most the cultures world wide is all are bounded by some religious

discipline. It is the religious discipline which makes a culture

progressive. I will cite a few examples.

In the last decade in Japan near the Osaka Bay a man made island was

built 20 kilometers inside the sea. Today the Kansai Airport exists on this

man made island. It is connected to the Osaka city both by road and rail. In

1995 an earthquake struck and the entire Osaka city was destroyed but

this man made super structures withstood natures bloodiest assaults with some

minor damages. To add to the misfortunate it was detected that the

airport is sinking 2 to 3 inches every month. 900 concrete pillars which could

be jacked by hydraulic mechanism were built. Today this is one the busiest

airport in the world. In order to achieve such incredible feats it is

only possible brought proper discipline which comes only through religion. We

need to learn the importance of discipline from the Japanese. The

Japanese are not the inventers but being improvisers they dominate the inventers.

Today the western countries are also recognizing the importance of

religious discipline.

Israel is known for its drip technology and is world leaders in

Agriculture, Defense and Networking. Desert and Agriculture are like making sky and

earth meet. But to achieve such a horizon one has to be highly disciplined. I

observed the Jews are one the most re

ligious and traditional. Despite

terrorist attacks in Israel almost every day they highlight their

achievements on the front page of their News Bulletins. This point was

mentioned by President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam in one of his lectures. We

generally love to discuss miseries in this discussion forum and very

rarely respond to our own success stories. Dear readers look at the Jews who

live under continues threat but still achieve the impossible.

Most of the European countries are again examples strong cultures and

traditions. Most surprising thing is except for Britain all are non

English speaking countries.

The Germans dominate the world economy by making world class products

and maintaining an excellent infrastructure and cultural heritage within.

Once an executive of Mercedez Benz was asked above the key to success. The

executive replied We believe in one policy, if we do any thing we do it

the best or we do not do it at all. In other words survival without

perfection is impossible.

It is believed that the Russians due not give up easily. It was the

Russians who broke the backbone of Nazi regime, since Hitler under estimated them.

The Russians have always dominated the Defense and Space aviation. After

the breakup of the Soviet Union despite economic crises the Russians still

stand among the top 5 in Olympic Games. One must adopt dedication from the

Russians. The other European nations also have such success stories. The result of

which today knowing at least one foreign language has become a must for

getting a good job.

The Americans are known for their propaganda and presentation skills.

The Discovery and National Geographic channels have some excellent

documentary on various Indian cultures viz. Indian religions, Life style of Nihangs,

India Science, Dieing age of Steam Locos, Indian Railways, etc. It is

like an outsider learning some thing from you and performing better than you.

We nee

d to develop our skills in propagating Sikhi from the Americans.

The saying Honesty is the best Policy is very much applicable to the

Zoroastrian (Parses) community in India. India being country of crooks &

cheats sounds strange that honesty exists. Being an unnoticed minority

the Zoroastrians control the hundred billon US$ TATA Empire. The Medical

benefits for their employees are the best in the world. They will see to

it that their employee lives. I remember during my tenure in TATAs the

company had spent Rs. 35 Lacs on one my colleague who was suffering from acute

pancreas disorder. In this highly materialistic world I believe no one

can do a SEWA like this. Unlike Sikhs the Parses do not have a country of

their own, but dominate Indias major business with honesty and maintaining a

low profile. The Sikhs who demand a Khalistan need to learn from the

Zoroastrians.

I stay in Bombay. Being a cosmopolitan city one can interact will all

Indian communities. I do have friends from various Indian communities. My

interaction with them has taught me many things. I believe that the good

and the evil exist in all cultures.

I appreciate the simplicity of the Maharashtrains and South Indians.

These communities constitute the educated people. They adjust with what they

have. They are extremely religious as well. Many are successful in the field

of research and development in western countries. Unfortunately I dont see

many Sikhs.

I have interacted with various business communities viz. Gujaratis,

Sindhis, Marwardis and Khatri (Bhapee) Sikhs. They are also very religious and

highly disciplined. There is tremendous internal fighting within families,

since money and peace cannot stay together. But despite the internal disputes

as far as possible they try to avoid break ups. The reason is simple any

business concern needs group of people to operate successfully. Their

children are taught the value of

money right from the very beginning.

I observe one the readers writing about a Bengali criticizing about

Sikhi. Such elements exist is all cultures. You will find within Sikhs also,

the ones who are promoting monasim. The Bengalis are emotional people. That

makes them good orators, writers, music composers and filmmakers. To

mention Ms. V Sarkar who produced the Mistaken Identity is also a Bengali. Lets

associate ourselves with the good.

I could improve my speaking and presentation skills by interacting with

the Christian community in India. I studied in the St. Josephs, a Christian

missionary school. Today we know English so we are able to prosper in

western countries. All developed countries are Christians and majority

Sikhs are prospering in Christian countries. Thanks to the British and the

Christian community in India that we can speak good English. In most

Gurudwara schools in Punjab I observe children do not have proper

sitting arrangement and need to be better organized.

My neighbors were Hyderbadi Muslims at one time. I observed that in

their community there are special tutors who teach children to read the Holy

Quran. Majority Muslims follow this practice. We also need such trained

tutors who could teach children to read the SGGS. I believe that most of

the Bhais in Gurudwaras should take such an initiative. This will help

children to live under Sikhi and generate employment for Bhais as well.

Now coming to our religion we have a great past but a bad present and

God knows what will be in the future. The saying When wealth grows men decay

is very much applicable to majority Sikhs in the present times. We are

economically quiet well of but majority spent a lot on drinking and

lavish spending. The result of which many families are not progressive. This

affects the upbringing of the children, their self-confidence and

self-esteem in the future.

I believe our survival during the Mughal

regime was much more difficult

as compared during the present times. But it is only in the present

scenario many are disassociating from the belief. This is very strange and

surprising.

I observe many at the same time are maintaining Sikhi and are leaving no

stone unturned to maintain it. Many have won racist battles. But apart

from wining such battles we have to be successful personalities World Wide in

other to promote Sikhi.

Lets ask the Guru Ji give as strength and power to maintain Sikhi and

bless us with success in every sector. We will be successful only if we live

under Sikhi with 5K. Certainly every drop makes an ocean.

The saying Nanak Dukhai Sab Sansar clearly states that sorrows and

Difficulties exist every where in world. But despite the sorrow people

across the globe in various cultures do achieve extra ordinary feats

with perfection. We also need to do the same in the present times by

following steps of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Chidiaan Naal Je Baaz Ladaavan, Taan

Gobind Singh Naam Dharaava.

Regards,

Anmol Singh

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
