The Nagar Kirtan is to celebrate the birth of the Khalsa so why do you have to do the Khalistan thing ? I do not see any Singh shouting Sikhistan Zindabad at Nagar Kirtan even though a few people demanded Sikhistan in the 1960s. If you want to shout Khalistan then organise a seperate march and shout it till the cows come home.

Just like someone should not be celebrating Vasaikhi at a demonstation to remember the 84 genocide victims you should not be shouting Khalistan slogans at a Nagar Kirtan for Vasaikhi.

oh and one more point, has anyone failed to mention why we allow companies to advertise their Businesses at the Nagar Kirtan.  Anyone who gives you something wants to make sure you know who gave it whether its western union or some of the local businesses. Just to be clear, we are a non-profit organisation and were only promoting our culture at the nagar kirtan.

Also, why does no one ask SGPC why they have not banned Bhangra Dancers at nagar kirtans.  If they did then we will back their decision.

Best Regards

Gurpreet

The SGPC are a management committee not the Khalsa Panth.

If you want to celebrate Vasaikhi for its Punjabi cultural reasons then why not organise a seperate march from the one celebrating the founding of the Khalsa. then you can chak de fatte, bomb the thumbi, dance with the lambera de nouw and help jagiro play her dhol.

At the end of the day, the youth need entertainment and excitement....if bhangra dancers, singers and dhol players are banned or have a seperate event at the same time as the nagar kirtan some where else...I gurantee most punjabi youths will be going off there.

What should be done is first organise a nagar kirtan in the morning make sure everyone is informed before hand wots the deal and a few hours later when its over the youths can go celebrate with bhangra, singers, dholis, etc. That way everyone is happy...

Man.... when did we loose the plot? When did Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj tell his Sikhs to pray first then dance the bhangra later on in the day? How come it's so important to cater for the Bhangra fans? Is our Guru Maharaj a mere entertainer then?

So the numbers attending the Nagar Kirtan go down if there is no Bhangra....Good!......In 1699 Guru Ji asked for 5 heads, not 1000. If he really wanted 1000 heads should he have done a Bhangra Gig!!!

As they say its about quality rather than quantity. Its much better to have a Nagar Kirtan with a handful of Gursikhs than having a carnival under the banner of a Nagar Kirtan just to attract numbers.

(gurpreet) The SGPC is the ones to lay down the laws and we should follow them. When they said stop marraiges in halls, then Singhs said 'akal takht has said no, so not allowed' - totally agree, but either follow them, or dont. You can't have it both ways. Whatever the SGPC decide, the Sikh Sangat will abide by.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ke fateh.

Well you should now what is sensible and right in a nagar kirtan other than to have others hold your hand and tell you what isr ight and wrong.. that's the whole point of being sikh and learning from guru ji.

sorry, just had t osay it...

You are truly confused. The SGPC do not dictate any such thing. They are just a management committee. Their decisions are not binding on the Khalsa Panth. The decisions of the Akal Takht are binding. The party hall Hukumnama was issued by the Akal Takht Jathedar (Ranjit Singh) not the SGPC.

Yes you cannot have it both ways so I hope you keep away from Gurcharan Mal who happily associated with the naraqtharis last year.

The SGPC and the Akal Takht are two very different institutions. One had its foundation laid by Guru Hargobind Ji in the 17th century and the other (SGPC) was started in the 20th century.

You harp on about culture but you really do need to learn about your religion.

Straight up. It's time to take back the maryada that is being lost to "pleasing the masses".

It' time to tighten up the nagar kirtan's. Our usuall policy "it's for everyone" gets interpreted as it's open to bhangra dancers, dhol players, hair-salon advertisers, laser-treatment centres, sidhu brothers meat shop, naamdharis,....etc.

I'd rather it be just a few hundred truly devoted sikhs who actually want to sing kirtan the whole way.

Our culture also dictates that we kill baby girls: should we start bringing them to the nagar kirtan and carrying out this inhumane act?

Our culture dictates we drink alcohol: should we start drinking it at nagar kirtans?

Our culture has the caste system inbred into it: should we have seperate nagar kirtans now?

I could go on about our culture.

I stopped being punjabi along time ago because the culture is sick.

The nagar kirtan is led by our Guru. Our Guru tried to get rid of the above culture.

So who should we listen to? Our Guru or some 'punjabi'?
