WJKK WJKF!!

Im also in the exact same position

I think the best way to do it is to go to slep early!......if you go to sleep at 12 then start sleeping at 11pm or even 10.30pm or earlier if you dont have to work/study etc. Then set your alarm to 3am - 4am........make sure that ur alarm is close to ur ears, cos iv slept through it before. Then as soon as u wake up, dont think about whether you want to wake up or not, cos as soon as you do that u will give in to ur mind....which wants to sleep. When you wake up run to the bath room and get a shower ...........cold water is meant to be the best cos it wake u up, it also gets the blood flowing through your body and has health benefits. ...... if u ant take the cold water, luke warm water will do and the shower will help you wake up......i was in the shower for like an hour once cos i was soo tired. then when your done u will feel refreshed...then do Nit Nem and if you feel tired afterwards you can catch up on your sleep...........

for a beginner , the earlier you get up the more time it leaves at the end to go back to sleep........but if u get up late then its harder to go bk to sleep...... i hope that made sense cos i typed it really quickly cos im meant to be  workin.......... :@

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ki Fatehhh Paji.

Some days the mind just does not want to allow you to get up, sleep earlier, it does help but no matter when you sleep you may find the same reluctunce to awake early.

What I do is after Sohilla Sahib paath, to do an ardas to ask Guru ji to give me strength in waking the next morning. Set your alram if you want to, although sometimes even when the alarm hasnt set properly and doesnt ring at right time, Guru ji'll awake you. With contiunuos waking at the same time, your body gets used to it and waking up starts to become a pleasure rather than ..."i need to...."

Guru kirpa...A big welcome for when you take amrit and become one of the Khalsa family... :TH:

Fatehhhh ji.

gur fateh , thanks so much for the replies!

lol its the cold water Parwinder Singh - sooo cold - especially in Scotland!!! lol but yeh i think overall its a test from Akal Purakh, if you can handle it step up to it!

Penji, before you took am rit, did u "dry run" ie practise everything? i want to take it asap, but im being advised to dry run for like 6 months 1st

i see the logic behind it, but sooo long!

lol...hm

Before I took amrit I didn't for 6 months only for about 6/7 weeks. That is full nitnem. Jap ji Sahib paath I used to do about 7 months i think before taking amrit and is what made me fall in love with Gurbani. Each persons journey towards Waheguru ji is different so you to do your banis for however long You want to is ultimately up to you. I suggest not to get too worried of the 6 months exact and try your best and in your own time.

Sikhi is unlike other faiths...It is a way of life...for which if you feel you are ready, then nothing can stop you. Guru's mehar and blessings will help you on the path if your rehit is kept and ardas is done with love. For a sikh the ardas plays an important part before any thing new he/she begins in their evry day life.

"Amrit is suppose to set your soul free, not bind you down."

There are several tips on waking up for amritvela if you do a search.

If you have alot of trouble with amritvela, try it once or twice a week at the beginning, and mark down which days you did amritvela, when you get a routine for 1-2 days, then increase it, and add it to your listing, and keep adding until you reach 7 days, this way it'll make you realize that you can't even miss one day since you're on 7 day streak, but you have to start small and build up. My two cents, or pence, or rupees, (whatever your currency) :TH:

my "dry run" was for about 5 days.

Singh, if you are getting your nitnem done everyday (reading it or listening to it), then you're ready. Amritvela will come too. Just don't fall inot the trap that you wait till you're "perfect".

Anyway, that's just my humble opinion.

Sorry if it sounds wrong, hehe.

p.s. i'll tell you personally, even though i aint no chardikala singh who rips up the amritvela....i still have no regrets about it. How could I, since it is Guru maharaj who LETS us take amrit. The only thing i regret is all the years that i was nigura.

Khalsa ji, what a great idea, im going to put that into effect.

i need to confess now. i have a slight problem that i have come against.

my mum and dad have a shop (surprise surprise!) we are non amritdharee yet. but we have ciggarettes, alcohol and meat (dont shoot me!!!) if i want to take amrit i can no longer work in the shop?

yeah man, tell your parents straight up that no matter how much you love and respect them and wish them well in the family bussiness, you'll have no dealing with those substances. Go get a part-time job somewhere else.

Just don't worry my mate, if you give your head to the Guru, i'm sure he'll give you a decent part-time job.

Doing paath as much as you want at any time is good. Specifiacally at amrit vela we shud try to do our panj baniya and Rehras paath bani for the evening and Sohilaa Sahib paath before sleeping, if you want to do more throughout the day..thas excellent.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
