This is interesting, i always wondered about this too.. can someone with great knowledge of historical context(uthanka) of gurbani please shed light on this.

hmm well from what my dad said.....i dunno how accurate this is but he said vaheguru sat at hazoor sahib (wasnt hazoor sahib them but thats the place) for 36 yughs.....and was in his own mauj when nothing existed.........as in no life etc...just god enjoying the anand .....then vaheguru started life etc...not sure how accurate that is

could it be interpreted as "god's name is the thirty six varieties of food"...as in... it doesn't matter what the 36 varieties are, just "eat" god's name and you will be satisfied and satiated

khat tursee mukh bolnaa maaran naad kee-ay.

chanting with one's mouth, the spicy flavors are savored. All these spices have been made from the Sound-current of the Naad.

ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਏਕੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥

छतीह अम्रित भाउ एकु जा कउ नदरि करेइ ॥१॥

chhateeh amrit bhaa-o ayk jaa ka-o nadar karay-i. ||1||

The thirty-six flavors of ambrosial nectar are in the Love of the One Lord; they are tasted only by one who is blessed by His Glance of Grace. ||1||

बाबा होरु खाणा खुसी खुआरु ॥

baabaa hor khaanaa khusee khu-aar.

neelee si-aahee kadaa karnee pahiran pair Dhi-aan.

The blackness of sin is erased by my wearing of blue clothes, and meditation on the Lord's Lotus Feet is my robe of honor.

ਕਮਰਬੰਦੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥

कमरबंदु संतोख का धनु जोबनु तेरा नामु ॥२॥

karam-band santokh kaa Dhan joban tayraa naam. ||2||

Contentment is my cummerbund, Your Name is my wealth and youth. ||2||

ਤਰਕਸ ਤੀਰ ਕਮਾਣ ਸਾਂਗ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

तरकस तीर कमाण सांग तेगबंद गुण धातु ॥

tarkas teer kamaan saaNg taygband gun Dhaat.

The pursuit of virtue is my bow and arrow, my quiver, sword and scabbard.

ਵਾਜਾ ਨੇਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੩॥

वाजा नेजा पति सिउ परगटु करमु तेरा मेरी जाति ॥३॥

vaajaa nayjaa pat si-o pargat karam tayraa mayree jaat. ||3||

To be distinguished with honor is my drum and banner. Your Mercy is my social status. ||3||

aapay sabh ghat andray aapay hee baahar.

He Himself is deep within all hearts, and He Himself is outside them.

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਹਰਿ ॥

आपे गुपतु वरतदा आपे ही जाहरि ॥

aapay gupat varatdaa aapay hee jaahar.

He Himself is prevailing unmanifest, and He Himself is manifest.

ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸੁੰਨਾਹਰਿ ॥

जुग छतीह गुबारु करि वरतिआ सुंनाहरि ॥

jug chhateeh bubaar kar varti-aa sunnaahar.

For thirty-six ages, He created the darkness, abiding in the void.

ਓਥੈ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਨ ਸਾਸਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਰਹਰਿ ॥

ओथै वेद पुरान न सासता आपे हरि नरहरि ॥

othai vayd puraan na saastaa aapay har narhar.

There were no Vedas, Puraanas or Shaastras there; only the Lord Himself existed.

ਬੈਠਾ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਇ ਆਪਿ ਸਭ ਦੂ ਹੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ॥

बैठा ताड़ी लाइ आपि सभ दू ही बाहरि ॥

baithaa taarhee laa-ay aap sabh doo hee baahar.

He Himself sat in the absolute trance, withdrawn from everything.

ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਤਿ ਆਪਿ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਗਉਹਰੁ ॥੧੮॥

आपणी मिति आपि जाणदा आपे ही गउहरु ॥१८॥

aapnee mit aap jaandaa aapay hee ga-uhar. ||18||

Only He Himself knows His state; He Himself is the unfathomable ocean. ||18||
