"rakhree"

From the comments made by Manjot and Bad Girl, I think its plain for all to see that they are trying to mix culture and religion together. This does not work. Oil and water springs to mind. The event is known as Raksha Bandhan. The sister ties the string in order to protect the brother from harm. This can be easily derived from the words 'Raksha Bandhan.' We as Sikh's do not need a piece of string to protect us from harm. The only protection for us is Waheguru.

As a message for the whole sangat, do not try and combine religion and culture, it hardly ever works. A few examples:

Panjabi culture believes in caste and a number of panjabi people will never marry out of 'caste'. Sikhi is against this ridiculous caste system.

Panjabi people are renowned for their hardcore drinking of alcohol. However, we know that any form of intoxicants are contrary to Sikhi.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

You're a fundamentalist :e:

my maternal uncle (mamaji, a so called amritdhari from Ontario, also a khalistan supporter lol) mailed back the Rakhree sent by my mom last year, this made my mom very upset. we all know that its not a part of Sikhi but still he could have respected the feelings of his sis. being too much religious to do little compromises over ur loved ones is really rediculous. but oh well therez no point of discussing over such things coz religious ppl r more stubborn than liberals.

watch your mouth young lady....

if you wanna show your "sisterly love" by giving your brother a rakhdee..then by all means..do so.

CAN WE ALL PLEASE UNDERSTAND WHERE THIS RAKHDEE THING CAME FROM

let me tell you how it got on the face of our planet... :D

it was first done by Hindus...

WHY?

because Hindus believe that a girl should never be left alone.

(dont even try arguing with me on this cuz i have taken a Religion course.)

Hindus believe that:

if the Hindu girl isn't with her father, she must be with her unlce.

if she is not in the presence of her unlce, then she must be with an older brother.

if not that, then older male cousin.

AND WHERE DOES THE "RAKDEE" PART COME IN??? you may ask..

well...the guys of the house of course were the ones who worked back in the day...

so they would bring the money.

the women cooked.

NOW HOW IS RAKHDEE CELEBRATED??...like this:

because the men of the house would come home and bring the money, the women of course would cook and ya da ya da...

so people set a date for when the SISTERS would MAKE A SPECIAL TREAT for their BROTHERS (sweets mostly..ladoo and stuff) and the BROTHERS would bring home THE MONEY for their SISTERS... the SISTERS would TIE THE RAKHDEES ON THEIR BROTHERS TO REMIND THEM THAT THEY MUST LOOK AFTER THEIR SISTERS...

DO SIKH GIRLS NEED TO BE LOOKED AFTER????

I DIDNT THINK SO!! WE HAVE GURU JI TO TAKE CARE OF US!! :TH:

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS THING IS CALLED "RAKHEE" as well as "RAKHDEE"

RAAKHEE=TO TAKE CARE OF...

we as sikhs do NOT believe in this sort of thing...because our Guru ji has given AMRIT to GUYS AND GIRLS...so WE SEE NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GIRLS AND GUYS.

so as you can see...

RAKHDEES (RAKHEES) ARE NOT TO BE WORN BY US, SIKHS

am i clear enough???? :@

OR SHALL I GO ON PEOPLE!?!?!?!?

You have spoken the truth! d_oh.gif Starting this year, I will not celebrate RAKHDEE anymore! d_oh.gif Thanks for showing me my errors. pray.gif I'm part of the khalsa panth! I don't need a piece of string, just guru sahib's hukham, which I can keep to my heart!

Indian thing or not, a string is a string is a string. You should show love all year long and not on one "special" day to love your sibling.

You celebrate Guru Nanak's birthday only once a year. You should show love all year long and not on a special day to show respect to your Guru. No?

If Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak's birthday once a year, does it mean they forget him on other days? If a brother loves her sister on Rakhrhi, does it mean he starts to hate her on other days?

Rakhrhi is an Indian 'Parv' and only Indians know it. Full stop.

O.K then when is the Rakhrhis birthday????????

I said a insignifegant thread means nothing. You can tie it or not tie it but it doesnt mean love or hate it means you tied a thread on someones wrist.

So now if I love my mom or dad there is a special thread to tie to them too?????

Pointless ritual after pointless ritual when will the madness stop?

rakhdee dont have a bday...

Pritam singh khalsa ji is correct.

rakhdee is a made up thing...for no reason..no meanin to it

Guru jis Gurpurabs is a sign of reality...

RAKHDEE IS SO NOT A REALITY...

wow.. are we really argueing over a piece of string now??

yes we are jio.... :D

a string makes a big difference for people

Guru Nanak Dev ji rejected to put on the string that Hindus wear....

so you think its stupid for us to argue about this...

we must follow our Guru jis steps...

we cant be great like them

but what we CAN do...we MUST do...

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
