i think your parents were 100percent correct.

amrit should not b taken lightly - prepare properly b4hand and it will be a thoroughly life changing experience - ull get a buzz for weeks afterwards!

ideally you should be able to follow the rehat in FULL (amritvela, nitnem, no meat etc) before taking amrit, so that its easier once u start and u get more spiritual benefit when u actually receive it.

chulla is not really full amrit, its for younger people - im not sure of the specifics, or its history.

i think once you are mature enough to think for yourself about religion and u have been able to follow the rehat for 6 months before hand, then this is the time for u to take amrit.

generally you feel an urge to take amrit after a while. that doesnt mean take it straight away either - i havent taken it yet but i REALLY want to ...... but ill wait so my commitment is stronger afta and i get a madly biiig buzzzzzz ^_^^_^

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!!

kind of depends

same thing happened to me

Ever since i was a little kid, i loved guru je. Guru je was always in my head. But sadly, no one told me that guru je forbade the eating of meat, cuting hair, etc. So when i was 10, i could read very good, and got some books from the gurdwara on sikhi. Reading them only increased the love for guru maharaj. And then i read that one is not a sikh without taking amrit. That moment, guru je made me stop all sins. He showed me the light. I was told not to take amrit by everybody, but once i knew i couldnt be guru jes sikh withour it, that was it. I practiced my reight for around a year, and then when i turned 11 with guru jes kirpa i took amrit. Till this day my family tells me why u so into sikhi, why u want keep so much reight. But they know that guru je is gonna let me go now. The point is, if youre ready, practice your reight, and if your ready, take amrit.

waheguru jee ka khalsa! waheguru jee kee fateh!!

personally i don't think age matters. and when i say this...i think about the sahib jadhay, and Guru Har Krishan Jee...anyone...at any age can meet Guru Jee...and can BE the Guru...

i was very young when i took amrit. i was 9 years old...(now 20) and i have no clue what inspired me to take it. and now i understand that it was Hukam. no one in my family was amrit dharee at that time...and at first my parents said no...i needed to start doing nitnem...and i remember i just cried and said no i was taking it. i was going to khalsa school at that time...so i had gursikh teachers that helped me with through it. i had never done nitnem before...but after taking amrit...me and my sister woudl get up amrit velah and do nitnem together with a tape...

i guess it's all Hukam huna...different people have different reasons for taking amrit..i know that after me and my sister took amrit it opened the doors for my mom to take amrit.

love and devotion to the Guru isn't calculated with age...if a child is capable of keeping rehit...and has shown that he or she can...waheguroo...nothing should be held back and that child should be given amrit...

then again...everything is in His Hukam huna...even some adults..who want to take amrit are held back because it's not Hukam...

Hukam...

*sigh*

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
