How To Tie Dastar

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

First off bhan ji, its great to hear about your committment to Guru Ji by wearing a dastar. Always remember the responsibility that comes with it. I do not tie this particular dastar style, but did have the sangat where I was able to learn how to do so. I will tell you how I learned it so that you can perhaps try this if the video does not help.

1. For the actual dastar, use two layers- when I tied it, they were the same length, not varied lengths like on that site, but that is your choice. So say you obtain a 4 m dastar, cut it in half once, now you have two 4 m dastars. Now take each half, and fold it down the middle lengthwise. Make sure its all lined up, then roll the dastar (ask for assistance or tie it to something if necessary) so that when you roll/fold it, each fold is like the width of your hand. Put aside and do the same for the other dastar piece. This folding makes handling the dastar a lot easier, especially for beginners.

2. Obtain a square piece of cloth. This piece of cloth should be long enough that it covers the top of your head and can be slightly tucked behind your hears. In the back it should be long enough so that it hangs about 2.5 inches from the nape of your neck.

3. Tie your hair in a joora on the top of your head. Place the square piece of cloth on top of it and tuck the front two corners behind your ears. In the front, the straight part should be at the desired point, a little bit higher than where you want your point to be in your dastar.

4. When you start tying the dastar, the bottom layer can be messy, not that big of a deal. Take the bottom layer and hold the beggining in one hand and the rest of the dastar in the other and start tying around and around starting of course at the front. You don't have to worry about starting the dastar by putting a piece over your joora or anything because you have the square cloth for that purpose.

5. Be sure that with the first layer you overlap twice to give stability, after that, make sure that you tie your dastar higher with each layer so it doesn't end up looking like one layer all the way across.

6. When you are done with the bottom layer, none of the square cloth should show except for the 2.5 inches that was hanging below the nape of your neck. You can gently pull on this to adjust your dastar and then tuck those layers into your dastar in the back, over the top.

7. Take your second layer which should be folded to help with neatness and make your "point" in the front and slowly take the dastar higher with each laar. You can eyeball it too to make sure your laars are evenly spaced.

8. When you are finished, use your fingers to smooth out the dastar and at the top gently "round" and smooth it out by using your four fingers together and your thumb as a base to tuck in loose layers or rough layers at the very top of the dastar.

For neatness and also so the dastar remains on your head, make sure the bottom layers when you start are neat and tight.

Good luck bhanji, hopefully i didn't make this too confusing. When I started wearing a dastar, there was no one I could turn to, so any tips I got over the net were greatly appreciated! I know the excitement one has when they start to wear a dastar and the courage it takes. Don't forget the bani to go with the bana

Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions

wahiguru ji ka khalsa, wahiguru ji ki fateh

i relly appreciate ur efforts fellow sangat ji!

now that you mention it, how would you tie it specifically for amrit sanchar?

would the starting bit of dastar be wrapped slightly different?

the main purpose was for general wear too.

unfortunately i am a perfectionist no.gif which i kno is relly bad n the main reason im only wearing it at home/in halls.

few of my friends have seen me with my dastar n have said it looks comfortable

if guru ji does kirpa on me and blesses amrit, will help me start wearing everywhere. pray.gif
