Kirtan And The Singing Of Panktees From Rehitnama's

Sangat jio, daas was in a conversation with daas' chacha ji. Chacha ji was listening to Bhai Amolak Singh da Shabad from Los Angeles 2006. In it, Bhai Sahib says "Dhan Guru Dhan Guru Pyare." daas' chacha ji said that that was kachi bani and that it shouldn't be read. Is it okay to read Panktees from Rehitnama's or anywhere else in Kirtan? If so, could you please provide evidence to this claim. Thank you.

From the Sikh Rehit Maryada:

Article VI

(a) Only a Sikh may perform kirtan in a congregation.

(b) Kirtan means singing and scriptural compositions in traditional musical measures.

© In the congregation, kirtan only of Gurbani (Guru Granth's or Guru Gobind Singh's hymns) and, for its elaboration, of the compositions of Bhai Gurdas and Bhai Nand Lal, may be performed.

(d) It is improper, while singing hymns to rhythmic folk tunes or to traditional musical measures, or in team singing, to induct into them improvised and extraneous refrains. Only a line from the hymn should be a refrain

This is proved very wel by singh84, any other thing than above said would not be BANI it would be a song,

so it should be avoided, and there is NO EXCEPTION, becuase bani says '

Come, O beloved Sikhs of the True Guru, and sing the True Word of His Bani.

aavhu sikh satguroo kay pi-aariho gaavhu sachee banee.

Sing the Guru`s Bani, the supreme Word of Words.

banee ta gaavhu guroo kayree baanee-aa sir banee.

Those who are blessed by the Lord`s Glance of Grace - their hearts are imbued with this Bani.

jin ka-o nadar karam hovai hirdai tinaa samaanee.

Drink in this Ambrosial Nectar, and remain in the Lord`s Love forever; meditate on the Lord, the Sustainer of the world.

peevhu amrit sadaa rahhu har rang japihu saarigpaanee.

Says Nanak, sing this True Bani forever. ||23||

kahai naanak sadaa gaavhu ayh sachee banee. ||23||

Without the True Guru, other songs are false.

satguroo binaa hor kachee hai banee.

The songs are false without the True Guru; all other songs are false.

banee ta kachee satguroo baajhahu hor kachee banee.

The speakers are false, and the listeners are false; those who speak and recite are false.

kahday kachay sunday kachay kacheeN aakh vakhaanee.

They may continually chant, `Har, Har` with their tongues, but they do not know what they are saying.

har har nit karahi rasnaa kahi-aa kachhoo na jaanee.

Their consciousness is lured by Maya; they are just reciting mechanically.

chit jin kaa hir la-i-aa maa-i-aa bolan pa-ay ravaanee.

Says Nanak, without the True Guru, other songs are false. ||24||

kahai naanak satguroo baajhahu hor kachee banee. ||24||
