Bhindranwale aide appointed new Jathedar of Taksal

A former priest of the Golden Temple, Bhai Ram Singh (40), an aide of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, has been appointed 15th Jathedar of Damdami Taksal. A decision to this effect was taken at an emergency meeting in [Tracy, California, USA], presided over by Baba Thakur Singh, Acting Chief of the taksal.

Bhai Ram Singh is nephew of Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa, the 13th Jathedar of Damdami Taksal. He took religious training in Damdami Taksal.

The appointment of Bhai Ram Singh as Jathedar was necessitated when the Jathedar of Akal Takht and the SGPC made a formal announcement on June 6 that Sant Bhindranwale had been martyred in Operation Bluestar. Earlier, Baba Thakur Singh and a section of Damdami Taksal had spread word that Sant Bhindranwale had escaped in Operation Bluestar and would emerge at an appropriate time.

Bibi Balwinder Kaur, wife of Bhai Ram Singh, while talking to TNS confirmed that the appointment had been made. She said Bhai Ram Singh himself had informed the family that he was presented the ‘dastar’ (turban) by Baba Thakur Singh. The function to mark his installation would be held at Chowk Mehta, headquarters of Damdami Taksal.

Bhai Manjit Singh, senior Akali leader and cousin of Bhai Ram Singh, said that with his appointment as Jathedar of Damdami Taksal, the controversy regarding the death of Sant Bhindranwale stood resolved. Bhai Manjit Singh was present at the Golden Temple when the Jathedar of Akal Takht had declared that Sant Bhindranwale was ‘martyred’ in the Operation Bluestar.

Singh Gill, president of the All-India Sikh Students Federation, said the stand of the federation stood vindicated with the appointment of Bhai Ram Singh who replaces Sant Bhindranwale after 19 years of his death.

Unlike Sant Bhindranwale, Bhai Ram Singh is considered a moderate religious leader. He is famous for his religious discourses and visits to a number of countries for the propagation of the faith. He is the grandson of the late Jathedar Jhanda Singh, the then district jathedar of Kasur (now in Pakistan) who had courted arrest in various ‘morchas’ (agitations) launched before Independence. His father, Jathedar Jagtar Singh, too was a senior Akali leader.

Bhai Satbir Singh, senior functionary of Damdami Taksal, told TNS that he had received a call from the USA that Bhai Ram Singh has been appointed Jathedar of the taksal by Baba Thakur Singh. He said the taksal would accept any decision taken by Baba Thakur Singh. In a recorded speech, Sant Bhindranwale had appealed to the Sikh masses to accept any decision of Baba Thakur Singh after his death.

Earlier, Bhai Ram Singh had resigned as priest of the Golden Temple in protest when he was transferred to Jind in Haryana by the SGPC. The SGPC took action against Bhai Ram Singh as he had refused to adhere to the ‘dress code’ specified for the Sikh high priests. Despite warnings, Bhai Ram Singh continued to wear the dress worn by the students of Damdami Taksal.

Meanwhile, Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, former SGPC chief, has hailed the appointment of Bhai Ram Singh.

I want to do benti to all the sangat not to make this a big issue. When I heard the news I was in shock. I called the singhs with babaji right away and they cleared everything up. Newspapers are just trying to cause trouble.

While I was in India with Baba Takhur Singh ji this past winter , Singh Sahib Ram Singh was called by babaji to start doing parchar. The parchar started from Bhindra kalan and kept going till babaji left for USA. Those who have heard Singh Sahib Ram Singhs katha know that it is almost 95 % percent just like Sant Kartar Singh ji's katha........amazing. Singh Sahib did seva at Darbar Sahib for 17 years, 11 years as granthi inside Darbar Sahib and is a very knowledgeable giani singh. While doing parchar in India he wanted to leave for Canada but babaji stopped him and kept him there for parchar. They continued to do parchar and had amrit sanchars every week with at least 100 ablakees every time. Babaji was really happy to see Singh Sahibs katha bring soo many people towards sikhi, it reminded him of the old times with Giani Gurbachan Singh Khalsa and Sant Kartar Singh Khalsa.

The point is that senior members of Taksal got together at tracey, California and told babaji that we should continue this kind of parchar.......babaji told them to give him 2 days to decide. Then babaji decided and said that we will give all the responsibility of parchar and of deray( ie Metha, Smastpur, Anandpur and other locations) to Singh Sahib Ram Singh due to the fact that babaji is very old and cannot handle this responsibi

lty. He was given only a saroopa and is second in command to babaji. Babaji also said with pride that Singh Sahib will do this seva until Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Khalsa returns. People are making a big issue, because the Akal Takat declared Santji as shaheed and Santji's older son took the dastar from the Akal Takat. Babaji said he totally respects Akal Takat but does not agree with their decision since they did not consult him AND that it was Khalsa Panchaint that celebrated the shaheedi not Akal Takat.

Babaji also said that singhs that say that santji is shaheed do not speak for Damdami Taksal, like Isher Singh(santji's son), Ajaib Singh and others. Please don't get me wrong but Singh Sahib is fully worthy of jathedari of taksal but it is not offically declared yet. There are like so many jathedars Metha right now, babaji just made Singh Sahib the main of them. Singh Sahib is second in command to babaji. May guruji bless Singh Sahib and babaji so they can do more parchar and take the panth in chardi kala. As far as Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Khalsa goes, babaji is still saying he is in chardi kala. I have a video tape from last September at my house where babaji does benti to all the sangat that santji will return, so please refrain from saying babaji is a liar.

Whatever step babaji takes will be respected by all of Damdami Taksals singhs, babaji is a true brahm giani. Santji is in chardi kala and will come soon, hopefully 2004(but that was just a prediction by singhs close to babaji, babaji just says sant ji will come very soon), DONT LOOSE FAITH!

lol, yeah i heard his katha as well at our gurdwara, it seemed like sant kartar singh ji mahapurish. i didn't know he was his relative until i found out last week in the news.

i knew he was from damdami taksal, becuase of how he spoke, but baba ram singh ji is an awesoem kathavachak.
