Ek Onkar Sat Gurprasad

The Primal Spirit Is Realized Through The True Guru's Grace

In the Indian subcontinent, mystics and sages have regularly used malas or rosaries as a meditative tool. When the rosary revolves around the index finger, one eventually comes to realize that the entire creation revolves around and evolves from Ek Onkar. It is for this reason the Bhawan Akhri begins with Ek Onkar. Ek means One; On is the audible sound used to represent the Cosmic Responance; and Kar means manifestation. The entire Bhawan Akhri is a poetic expression of how all existence is a manifestation of Ek Onkar; how Divine Love is attained when one identifies with Ek Onkar as one's True Self; and how sorrows arise when one misidentifies with the ego as one's True Self.

The Origins of Ek Onkar

The mantra Onkar existed 3000 years before the advent of Guru Nanak. Onkar is found in both Hindu Vedas and Buddhist Dhammapada, and is the sacred mantra of the Jain Faith. Onkar is the more precious sound current in the Vedas. Its vibration enables one to experience Sat Chit Ananda or Pure Bliss Consciousness. The Mandukopanishad describes Onkar as:

That which was, is, and will be, is all Onkar

The three aspects of existence are a manifestation of Onkar. They are akar, creative; okar, sustaining; and mokar, dissolving. The three aspects of existence are not seperate, but are One Conscious Spirit.

Due to the ineffable nature of Onkar, those with concrete modes of understanding created by gods to symbolize the three aspects of existence. Brahma was the creator, Vishnu was the sustainer, and Shiva was the destroyer. People would concrete modes of understanding began worshipping the deity gods through prayer and rituals. Since concrete knowledge is construed from sensory perception, such worship was not sufficient from a transcendental experience of the ineffable nature of Onkar.

To enlighten humanity with the transcendental experience of Onkar, Guru Nanak placed the numeral Ek in front of Onkar to denote the three aspects of existence are One nd inseparable. Ek Onkar is Pura or Absolute, whereas a god is adhura or limited to only one aspect of existence. Ek Onkar is Satnaam, Karta Purakh, Nirbhou, Nirvair, Akaal Murat, Ajuni Sabhang, and is realized through Gurprasad. Guru Nanak uttered these attributes after he reappeared in the river Bein where he was believed to have disappeared.

Ek Onkar is Satnaam. Satnaam is comprised of two words, Sat and Naam. Naam literally means name. In the East, names are not merely labels to identify one person from the other, but rather describes the essence of one's life's purpose. Therefore, Naam means essence, and the essence of Ek Onkar is Sat. Sat has a double meaning, but both meanings contain the same original root. In Sanskrit, Sat means Being and existence, and Satya means Truth and validity. Sat is an eternal state of Being, that which is constant and is not subject to change. Satya is a philosophical quest, whereby Truth is defined, sought, and the rules to discover Truth are formulated. Ek Onkar is both Sat and Satya, whereby Hukkam or Cosmic Law, is an eternal state of Being.

Ek Onkar is Karta Purakh. Karta means creative cause. If Ek Onkar was solely Creator, then the cause would control the Creator. Therefore, Ek Onkar is both the Creator and the cause behind the creation. The word Purakh has a double meaning. Purakh literally means person. Ek Onkar is not a person, but rather the Cosmic Consciousness of Being observing the creation. The Literal interpretation of Purakh may lead one to believe Ek Onkar is separate from the creation, however, the second meaning of Purakh solves this dilemma. Purakh also mean Puri or pervasive, therefore the entire creation is Ek Onkar. Unlike the sculptor, who is separate from his creation, Ek Onkar is both the Creator and the creation. By discarding all ideas of Ek Onkar being separate from the creation, there is no need to renounce or run away from the world.

The world is the home of the True One, in which The True One resides.

- Guru Nanak

One's perception of the creation is only True if the individual consciousness is aware of the unifying force binding the creation together. But if one's consciousness is unaware of the unifying force, and identifies with the concrete mind's perception of the phenomenal world, then one's perceptions are like chains imprisoning the Soul within the body.

Ek Onkar is Nirbhou and Nirvair. Nirbhou means fearless and Nirvair means without enmity. Fear only exists when something threatens one's physical or psychological well being. That which is perceived as threatening becomes the enemy. Since Ek Onkar is both the Creator and the creation, everything is a manifestation of itself. Just as one welcomes their own mirror image with love, the entire creation is a loving reflection of Ek Onkar.

Love is the essential nature of Ek Onkar. Divine Love is not like the love we experience in our interpersonal relationships.

In this world, there is only mutual love. Each person loves another to be loved.

- Guru Ram Das

Love is experienced between two lovers, between parent and child, between brothers and sisters, and with relatives and friends. In these relationships, one often loves another to satisfy one's own desire to be loved.

Divine Love flows through a natural process.

- Guru Amar Das

Divine Love flows through a natural process because it is unconditional. Ek Onkar expresses Divine Love without the desire to be loved. Divine Love flows in all directions freely and does not restrict its love to anyone. Just as a stream flows from the snow covered mountains freely, Divine Love flows from Ek Onkar unconditionally. All we have to do is open our hearts and experience its cool refreshing nature. Once Divine Love is experienced, the desire to be loved vanishes because one realizes one's True Essential Nature is Love.

Ek Onkar is Akaal Murat, the timeless image. To understand the timeless image of Ek Onkar, it is essential to first understand the concept of time. Time is the distance between two changes. If nothing changed, there would be no awareness of time. For example, a clock measures the distance between two changes. But when a clock stops ticking while one is asleep, one awakens with no sense of time. Essentially, one feels as if time was temporarily still. In the creation, everything is constantly changing. In the morning the sun rises and in the evening it sets. The human mind constantly changes thoughts within a blink of an eye, and the human personality changes value and belief systems throughout the life span. Everything is in a constant state of change and is therefore subject to time and age. In contrast, Ek Onkar is timeless because it is Sat, an eternal state of Being. The Absolute Being is unchanging, stable, and constant.

Ek Onkar is Ajuni Sabhang. Ajuni means unborn and Sabhang means self-creating. Ek Onkar was not born of someone and has no mother or father. The body is born by the union of male and female. That which is born is subject to change, time, and death. However, within the body is the eternal state of Being, which remains constant and never changes. If you close your eyes, you will discover that nothing changes inside. The very life flowing from the eternal state of Being is constant. Life is eternal energy. The eternal state of Being is Sabhang or self-creating. Ek Onkar exists on its own and has no support except its own.

Ek Onkar is realized through Gurprasad. Gurprasad is the Guru's grace. The Guru is Naad Shabad, which is the sound current resonating within the Guru's hymns. By consciously internalizing the Naad Shabad, one's consciousness travles within the heart to connect with Anahata Naad or the Cosmic resonance of Ek Onkar. The Guru's grace is the power of Naad Shabad to calm the constant flow of thoughts and to reach the realm of Anahata Naad. It is for this reason the mantra Ek Onkar is followed by Sat Gurprasad in the Bhawan Akhri. The True Guru's Grace enables humanity to realize that its True Self is Ek Onkar.

well im afraid this isnt exactly what the gurus meant

the words in gurbani are

ik o-an-kar i think giani thakur singh specifically said not to say ong but to say oan. and its explained in the katha on japji sahib on Sikh Sangat.

:TH: you hit the spot my friend. saying it ongkar is very very wrong :sady:

its suppose to said like so

iek E AM kwr

the way it was written in the post was like so, iek aMg kwr

see the difference please :D and this also justifies the need to read gurbani as it was written by guru sahib, english will never be as powerful as gurmukhi

edit. ok now the gurbani font decides not to work for me :sady: uhhh i have a question for admin, how come in the font list there isn't a gurbani font????? :D

edit2: had to manually type the tags in for gurmukhi to show up.

Read the entire shabad, and the meaning will become clear.

STOP DISMEMBERING BANI!!

PS is this Jaswinder Singh the fellow who's articles that are so popular on Hindunet etc?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
