waheguru jee ka khalsa, waheguru jee kee fateh

ive had my head ripped off for this already, so please try not to be too blunt.

basically, i keep falling asleep whilst doing nitnem. i nod off for a couple of seconds, realise what has happened and then usually slap myself a couple of times to wake up.

i have no idea what is going wrong. ive taken a lot of advice from Gursikhs, such as always go to sleep early, dont eat for a few hours before you go to sleep, drink tons of water so you always need to get up, have cold ishnaan including kesh, always do kirtan sohila before sleeping, and most importantly ardaas every night!! doing benti to guru sahib to get me up and keep me awake. the problem isnt getting up, its staying up! before starting nitnem, i yawn like a billion times, and then whilst im doing nitnem i just drift off. i realise that ive stopped reciting gurbani n its gone quiet, so i pull myself out of sleep. this is silly, Guru Sahibs kirpa, amritvela has been going for a couple of years, but i just get more and more exhausted!! some people have said that...maybe im not getting enough sleep but i know i am!! and im not getting too much either. 5 hours is good enough for me. ive tried more sleep and less sleep, i just feel worse. 5 hours is my 'optimum' level of sleep. i dont have any medical conditions, im not anaemic or anything...i try to eat healthily and exercise daily.

what am i doing wrong?? im so angry at myself, how can i get rid of the tiredness?

Well, first off you should recognise that Maharaaj as already done kirpa on you in that you're getting up at AmritVela, taking ishnaan and sitting down to your NitNem.

Anyway, a couple suggestions that might help, ( they helped me that is)

- try controlling the breathing e.g. either loooooong breaths / short sharp ones???

- maybe do your nitnem standing up, or at least stand up when feel sleepy. On a side note, I wouldn't recommend walking around while doing your Nitnem if using a Gotka sahib.

However, from reading your post it sounds as if you're not getting enough sleep - I've always thought that 6 hours is optimum :@

Most importantly, keep doing ardaas!

Within my mind, I think thoughts of always rising early, and making the effort.

I would just give it time..maybe its Guru's Kirpa part that is missing..you never know..and you did say your getting enough sleep so I don't think if that's the problem...I would suggest to keep doing what your doing and hopefully one day you'll be floating in Kirpa!!!

There are several stages in sleep and I don't think you are going into the stage of the sleep where it is at its deepest state. Maybe you should seek some kind of sleep specialist. Also when you wake up for amritvela to Jap naam you should try and have full concentration and stay awake since meditation is equal to number hours of sleep. If you fall sleep dash cold water on your face to wake yourself up. You can also have a glass of water.

I fall asleep alot while paathing too.

Don't wear too warm clothing, and walk around too keep awake. When ur bowt to finish ishnaning, let some cold water run for a moment to wake urself up. Open a window to get some fresh air in too.

singh, everyone should know that 8 hours is the recommended ammount of sleep you should have, every good scientist and doctor will tel you that, your missing out on 3 hours sleep, just like to point that out

also, keep in mind that its harsh on the human body to keep up amrit vela for the rest of your life, you might say "na man its easy, shaolin warriors do it all the time"

shaolin warriors devote their day differently to how we do, therefore maintaining differennt levels of energy. we in the west go to work, work hard mentally as well as phyically, play with our 2 year sons and daughters and by the end of the day we are wasted

so dont be to harsh on yourself and keep standards as high as the skys, you only human at the end of day, how old are you may i ask? and for how long have been waking up for amrit vela?
