I do feel embarrased about not being able to speak punjabi properly, and it is frustrating as I know some basic words and sentences, the usual stuff like

sat sri akal

ki hai

meh teek ha

thus kitha ranthea

and hungee! lol

When people have tried talking to me in punjabi, I tell them I can't speak it, I have gotten weird looks...like they are looking down on me! My parents are always busy and not interested in teaching me, which hasn't helped and I don't have other sikh mates I can practice with.

Are there any particular punjabi shows I can look out to download from the internet?

1. Tell your parents to only speak to you in Punjabi.

To make it easy at first, they can substitute English words.

I.e., "Spoon day" instead of "Chamde day" (meaning give me the spoon).

2. Go the Gurdwara and make friends with some elders and have them speak with you in Punjabi. It'll decrease their loneliness and you'll get practice.

Or your grandparents, uncles, or neighbors.

3. Learn to read Punjabi. It's easy, it's phonetic. If you get bogged down, remember that everyone in Punjab including bicycle repairmen knows how to read Punjabi, so you can certainly do so too.

Then start reading aloud. Start with childrens books (grade 1) and work your way up.

4. Watch Punjabi movies if you like watching movies.

I think the best way to learn punjabi is to speak more of it. Unfortunately the so called 'common' singh in your class wont know much punjabi and so you wont improve your grasp of the language this way.

Speak more with parents, listen to sukh-sagar radio, watch channel punjab. Go to gurdwara and speak with some giani's. I know this can sound daunting but its the way forward for you.
