I think it may be a mixture of both.

Think of life as a card game and when you are born you are dealt a hand. You have no control of this i.e. where and when you are born.

But with time you obtain knowledge and abilities and can reflect and try and choose a route for your life. This itself is impacted on by your own personal characteristics (i.e. looks, abilities, intelligence) but also teh external environment plays a part such as available opportunities.

In the end a lot seems down to God's grace and your own efforts.

God controls EVERYTHING period, whether you like it or not. How would God be samrath if we had the ability to control our destiny? Some ppl say that if this case, I might as well sit in a dark room and do nothing. Go ahead, cause even then, God's hukam is controlling you.

Another theory is that God lays down the paths and choose which one we take. Even though it seems as though we choose to take a certain path, God still controls, whether you took the good path or the bad one.

In the end it's all Waheguru's khed. Waheguru created the universe(s) and destroy all of them as well, to his own liking.

Somebody once gave me this analogy:

The relationship between God and human is a little like that between a person and an ant. The person is clearly much bigger than the ant, so is ultimately in control of the situation. The ant can still make little decisions, but it will always be where the person can see it. The person has much bigger power, e.g. to crush the ant, or nudge it along a different path.

Akaal Purakh created us, and this is his play. Whilst we seem to make our own decisions in our lives, Guru Ji has the power to 'interfere' at any point in any way.

Hope this helps.

I've heard there are 6 things are out of your hands, the rest you(the ego) are responsible for and create through your Karms.

Birth/Death

Sanjoag/Vijoag

Maan/Apmaan

What the veer above, Sher-e-moreau says is a very deep outlook, but such an outlook cannot be a thought/view of the mind alone rather it has to be in your every single actions. The advice by veer ji is fully understood when you've Surrendered yourself to the Guru. Meaning your ego no longer rule your actions, rather it is will of the Guru.

We often get in our own way by swimming against the current, let us learn how to float.
