Non Sikh Wearing Kara

Hi. I am a non Sikh, but practice Kundalini Yoga and have read and believe msot of the Sikh religion. I do not plan on becoming baptized. Is it offensive to anyone if I wear a kara? I know that I have read that it is not really a kara unless it is blessed and given to you, but I believe the deep spiritual meaning that it has. I don't want to offend anyone. Is this okay? I would say its okay to wear kara in your case :wub: but some precautions to take before wearing one... No alcohol, no smoking etc..

i think you should go for it

one of the things the kara repesents is that its a circle which describes God as it has no beginning or end

But one thing to remeber is that the kara also reminds you that your not suppose to do anything bad with these hands that God has gaven you

5 Kakaars have a lot of meaning which in themselves could take a lifetime to understand - just like Gurbani. Hence i agree with the sentiments of what the previous members have advised but would add put as much effort as possible into the understanding of Gurbani as this will give you the true meaning of the Kara.

I personally do not think it's okay. If we make an excemption, before long everyone will be wearing it and it'll loose it meaning. All the 5'ks should be modelled on a proper Sikh.

Our community is also facing a problem due to non sikhs wearing our symbols and then doing silly things. It ends up giving our community a bad name.

I think you shouldn't wear a kara at all. A lot of Sikhs do get offended when non-sikhs (especially Hindus and Muslims) wear karas. Check out a thread called "can moneh wear karas" out. You will see what I am talking about here.

A kara has a lot of symbolic value: if you respect the symbolism, i would strongly suggest wearing one!

hmmm i think most of these guests are the same person lol, lets not cause more intolerance, i think bhenji knows a little about sikhism and agrees with most of the concepts she has read, i think itd be alright for you to wear a kara i doubt whether any1 would tell you to take if off!!! do whatever you think is right but show it some respect aswell as sikhlionz said previously!

Its quite stoopid really though - its our Sangaths fault for allowing Kar'eh to be sold at shops etc as if their ANY OLD ITEM - no wonder Muslims and Hindus go about wearin them - a Kara has more meaning to it that than just a "steel bangle".

The thread- starter says that they are non-Sikh- and do NOT plan on being baptized - then WHY ARE YOU PLANNIN ON WEARIN ONE???! Just becuase you do Kundalini Yoga doesnt mean that you have the right to go abot wearin a Kakaar.

^^ I sound really in-your-face there lol am not being moody about the situation but I don't think you should wear one - you got no reason to wear one. I understand that you have read into this Religion and the spiritual meaning of the Kara but why just wear it about - it aint a fashion-item.#

I also get the feeling that MOST other faithed people wear a Kara or want a Kara becuase they see a Kara like they see that 'budda' u know the laughin budda that people keep in their house...messed up
