One Big Confusion

While much of what you say may be correct gurbarakaal, partcularly the dirty politics bit, it still seems very strange that ur ustaad tied a dastar on balbir singhs head.

As we know a dastarbandi is the 'official' transfer of jathedhari and those tying the dastaars are usually people who accept and hence congratulate the new jathedhar with the dastaars. If i am wrong in my understanding then please correct me on this issue.

Your right that ur ustaad's view doesnt particularly mean much to me, but the politics being played is quite interesting. On one hand we have people saying that they do not acknowledge balbir singh as jathedhar, and with the same hand they tie a dastaar on him on his dastar bandi and hence acknowledging his jathdhari?!. Perhaps this is also some political angle being played. I just cant imagine other nihang singhs who have stood against balbir singh going to his dastarbandi and offering a dastar to him. Hence why i believe some people are confused on this issue.

We probably wont find out, and personally im not all that bothered, but it is interesting to see that these 'kursi wars' and dastaar bandi competitions are taking place in literally every sikh group. its become a joke now, the whole tradition has become political and lost the true meaning.

I understand what your saying AK-47, but there are different reasons for a Dastarbani, not just for Jathedhari. When a child has his dastar tied by their father, does that mean the father accepts the child as his Jathedhar?

This event was for the Bhog of Balbirs family, not for his Jathedhari, and you must ask how many Dastarbandis does soemone need?

Again, like I mentioned earlier, why speculate and assume, only way to find out is to ask Niddar Singh yourself when he returns from India. I have my own views, but would rather not speculate on it myself. Niddar Singh could be playing politics and penthreh himself, if he never did nothing that day, people on forums wouldnt have nothing to talk about :)

In my view, the person who deserves the Kursi doesnt make massive events, media, and hype like this, he should have the nimrata to accept the Bachan of his Jathedhar and take his place if the Guru wills it. The danger today is that with politics overcoming Sikhi, the maya of power and kursiya these wars are bound to happen.

Gurfateh !

Before I say anything I must say I don't know Niddar Singh Nihang (I've just seen him a few times in the days when he did gatka displays, usually with Uptej Singh et al, in the days before the 'websites')

I don't know Bhai Amritpal Singh either and I don't know anything about the 'backstairs intrigue' that appears to be going on in the Dal Panth .

What I would like to say is that if you look at the situation purely through the lens of 'Punjabi Tradition' - all I can see is a 'Pugree da Rasm' or 'Dastarbandi' .

Balbir Singh Nihang lost his father I believe in the recent shootings ?. It is customary at the 'Bhog' after a Father has died for a turban to be tied on the head of the eldest son, to show he is now the 'head of the family' - the turban is usually tied by the boy's Mama ji (Mother's brother) or if he is married by his wife's father.

Perhaps that is all that is happening here - sometimes if no family members are present or if the family decide, a Respected member of the Sangat or family will tie the turban. As Balbir Singh is a Nihang - the most important person would be his Jathedar ie. Baba Santa Singh.

I believe no one has said or claimed this is a 'Dastar bandi' for the 'Jathedari' - perhaps it is purely a family dastarbandi that has been portrayed or misconstrued as something else ?
