Bhenji, I dont think you really realise what Ustaad means. Seriously, if went and called Jujhar Singh, an Ustaad, he would tell you he is not. That cannot be nimrita either, because the truth is the truth. If he was an Ustaad, he would say, everything is in gurujis kirpa.

Im not picking on him or you in any kind of way, im just trying to say that the word Ustaad is highly revered. He will tell you the same himself.

Well at the end of the day hes taught me- with kirpa, so doesnt that make him a teacher? So could u define what Ustaad actually means??

If you see the attatchment, its a jpg from Mahan Kosh by Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha. It is the dictionary to Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Mahan Kosh says that an Ustad is a teacher, and then goes on to say in context of Guruji that, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was/is an Ustad.

Thats just the gurbani aspect of the word.

If you look at Indian Classical Music for all types of instruments, an Ustad is a Great Teacher, who himself has been an amazing Maestro.

Wikipedia says:

* Ustad/Ostad (or Ustaz/Ostaz) (also meaning "master" or "teacher") is used in Persian, Arabic, Turkish (Usta), Malay, Urdu and Hindi to denote a master of high skill

* Pandit is a term used in India for a scholar or a skilled master and is the honorific title for an expert musician. The Muslims in India, however, use the title Ustad.

Like i said, ask Jujhar Singh yourself what he sees as an "Ustad" and then ask him if he would ever see himself ask one.

To be blunt, there are many people who vastly more experienced, who are still not refered to as Ustad, and these people spend a life time trying to learn and perfect their art.

As i said before, this is not a personal attack on Jujhar Singh. We are trying to determine what the real meaning of Ustad is, and the context in which it should be used.

yh raag kirtan does rule rockon.gif

It makes a great significance to the kirtan (thats why maharj made it!)

The mood of the shabad and the time at which it is 2 b sung is all done for the sangat to get the most anand out of it and to get closer to akaal purukh through the kirtan

nd the sound current of raag should reach your soul, connecting you with maharaj

raag kirtan - food 4 the soul!!! :s

bt allow any arguments over it war.gif (onli said that 2 use the cool emoticon!)

Raag kirtan is very important.. but the thing is that in guru sahibs time the singhs were very chardikalaa and would sing in raag all the time. But they would do riaze of the saaj for Years before doing kirtan with it and therefore it was second nature for them, and so they could play in raag and at the same time understand the baaani and vibrate on it. But alot of people that sing in raag when i ask them what the bani means they don't no I AM NOT TRYING TO SAY THAT THERE NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE, but they've spent so much time on learning the raag and not on the actual shabad. Trust me i play a bit of dilruba and to even just sing while playing is extremely hard. and for this reason i never do raag kirtan at programs or smgms because we should care more about the bani and less on the sound BUT I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE RAAG KIRTAN :s :D :D :D

Bhul chuk maaf

you ask any ustaad, and they in nimrata and in respect of thier own ustaad will never claim to be an ustaad. So I call Jujhar Singh "ustaad ji" cos he is my teacher. But he dont say " im your ustaad and address me as such..." If this isnt acceptable then the only oether word ofr teacher is Guru. So i could call him Guru Ji instead...

If i asked Jujhar Singh do you see yourself as ustaa, he would say i only see my ustaad as ustaad and no-on else. Then if Jujyhar Singh ask his ustaad" do you see yourself as ustaad? and his Ustaad would reply " i only see my ustaad as Ustaad...!

n it goze on n on . you get the picture?
