Brother, Please DON'T take any offence.

I know there are 33 crore Devi and Devtas in the ancient Sapat Sindhu civilisaation, which later became Sanatana Dharam and then Hindu Dharam. But don't you know that once the father of Sati, Daksha organised a YAGNA, he invited all big Gods and Godesses but not Shiva as his daughter married aginst his wishes. Sati went there to ask why they hadn't been invited. Upon questioning, her father replied with some harsh word against Shiva. This was enoguh, full of shame she commited suicide on the pyre of the YAGNA. From here Shiva enters, he takes Sati and wanders around with her body for several days. Suddenly piece by piece Sati's body parts begin to fall, each time there is a Devi born out of her body part that falls. Its like this 108 Devis are created. I don't say that there are only 108 Devis, but there are only 108 who originated from Sati.

Hence, I once read somewhere it was based on that theory of 108 Devis.

DO NEVER but NEVER AGAIN TALK ABOUT SOMEONE LIKE THAT, UNLESS ITS SOMEONE YOU KNOW. THIS IS NO THREATENING JUST A REQUEST.

Fateh.

in sikhi numbers do not matter

you want to jap naam with every breath, not 108 times

if you do 108 jap jee sahib paath, thats great, but so is 109 or 107

Meditation upon every breath is advance stage(ajapa jap), lot of sants give the students 108 mala some 111 mala in starting stage, so that students mind does not wander aways stays within boundary of malas which reminds students to do jaap via either audibly or reflect upon gurmantar/mool mantar by moving slowly from one bead to another. This is nowhere to seen as empty ritual. However just like anything else extreme is wrong, understanding and moderation is best way. If person thinks doing x amount of mala eg- 200,000 in 40 days will get bhramgyan or they are in advance stage they really are illusioned, they have taken this form of devotion(japping naam via mala so mind doesnt wander around) into extreme and into empty ritual which is fault of mindset of that person not fault of people who use 108/111 mala in order to meditate.

One thing its interesting to see sikh sants will never say do this amount of patt or mala you will get this, its our people fault who take them out of context. The whole point doing x amount of patt/mala audiblly or deeply slowly reflecting upon patt or gurmantar/mool mantar so that naturally it invokes positive energy/ajapa jaap in us which is at sleep.

Actually , to cut a long story very short,

Daksha, Parvatees Father criticised Shiva constantly. Frustrated she confronted Shiva about his manner and actions, the dancing, nakedness, sitting with demons, etc etc etc. the list was pretty long! :s

Shiva simply replied

“there’s a difference between morality and spirituality” tongue.gif

my friend the number 108, 111, and 1008 just is a way of saying 108 x Sri or 1008 x Sri

It is just a was of writing Sri 108 times in a simplified way. Personally i dont agree with the numbers. The sangat will know if their sadhu if a giani, brahgiani, sant or a pakhandi.

Sri is just a term used for respect
