Hi

I am just posting this out of curiosity; how many of you listen to non-Sikh music? I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all, I just want something to compare to Muslims and music.

what is exactly sikh music in your eyes?

i hope its not bhangra

Haha, no, I just mean music that is not traditional to Sikhs, like, who listens to Hip Hop, techno, rock, whatever.

id listen to music if it had any real meaning to it, in hip hop all u hear is girl this and drink that, its not very goood for a persons spiritiual life, i mean with other types music also its almost meaningless if you've spent a good few hours listening too music inside u feel empty still, well its from my point of view for others it may be different

but when i listen to gurbani for a while it maybe whilst i do school work etc i still get some peace from it

That's interesting. I listen to Hip Hop but it's usually pretty conscious stuff, not gats and bling type of stuff, e.g. Dilated Peoples, Brother Ali, Lupe Fiasco, Blueprint, RJD2, etc etc. In Islam maybe half the ulema say no music, several more say nothing with strings, some say only Islamic singing, a significant minority say music is okay. I knew Sikhs used music but was not clear to what extent it was okay to listen to non-canon music.

Besides Gurbani Kirtan ill listen to pretty much anything sung in Raag:) I also listen to Qawwali though I like to listen to those which have a spiritual meaning.

Rap is pretty much it after that although i like to listen to those songs which actually mean something rather than a song with ryming profanities :s
