Sometimes we tend to forget just what Gurbani is.

"Vaho vaho bani nirankaar hai"-SGGS

In this video, Gyani Thakur Singh ji highlights one of the greatest mistakes Sikhs of today are making. We see Gurbani printed in newspapers, magazines, cards, all of which ends up in the garbage or recycle box. Gurbani should not be spread out like this and should be limited to only pothis and gutkas.

The counter-argument is that it's parchaar. Well, watch the video.....

In the very least, we can all make an effort to change ourselves and our homes in terms of Gurbani Satkaar.

- Make sure you have a proper place for gutkas/pothis in your home. If possible, keep a separate room for pothis and place them on a nice bed, or at least on a nice shelf. Don't place other household items beside the pothis. And keep it dust free.

-Wash hands with soap prior to touching the pothis. Many times our hands are greased with hair oil prior to nitnem. Just washing with water isn't enough.

- Keep a seperate towel for drying hands prior to touching the pothis and wear a hazooria (palla). Hazooria serves two pruposes. First, it's a symbol of humility. Second, it helps maintain cleanliness and sucham. Sometimes one needs to scratch the nose or head, or need to open a door, trun on a light while holding a pothi. A hazooria can be used in these cases.

-If your family has Guru Granth sahib ji's saroop in their home, then the level of maryada and satkaar needs to be even higher. Maharaj ji should have a nice size bed, a nice sized takht and manji sahib, chanani(chandoa), chaur, etc. Also, timely Parkash and sukhasan seva done daily; changing rumala sahibs and maharaj ji's white clothes accordingly; keeping the room ventilated/airconditioned according to the weather conditions; nice aromatic sprays/dhooops used as often as possible.

Meat, alcohol, tobacco should obviously be kept away from the home. We must realize that it is a great privilage to have Maharaj ji in the home, which infact Guruji has given for us to live in. If one can't shoulder the responsibility, then it's better to have Guruji's darshan at the Gurdwara.

-Other things we can personally do is not print Gurbani on wedding cards. Other than that, posters, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines are a bigger issue that needs greater unified effort to resolve.

I think this video is a real wakeup call.

I would suggest that all Gurdwaray have a place at the entrance where sangat can place any newspapers/wedding cards/posters etc which have images of Gurus/Historical Gurdwaray/Gurbani, so that the Giani can dispose of them correctly - Aggan Pait.

I have one observation to share and thats the issue of Gurbani in the cyber/IT format.

Now since the recent invention of Gurbani computer programmes we see more laptops, pdas and other portable hand held devices with Gurbani content. Now on one side we talk about Gurbani in the printed format but what about the non tangible versions of Gurbani within the computer memory and other devices. Often the laptop is dumped on the floor or the hard drive is kept on the floor, Gurbani is projected on the wall and sometimes even projected a white sheet taken from the storerooms. Handheld portable devices with Gurbani enter places where we wouldn't "like" Guru Granth Sahib Ji to have parkash. We use the same computer which contain Gurbani to download/view any other non Gurmat stuff.

Now are we not respecting Gurbani in that context? Sometimes the beadbi roko squad say a school is too dirty for Guru Granth Sahib Ji's saroop yet are willing to take a laptop and project Gurbani in that same dirty environment. Shabad is Guru so each tuk deserves a high level of respect too.

I am not throwing a spanner in the works. I agree fully with Giani Thakar Singh is saying, but I don't think people in practice (and that includes us amritdhari sikhs) still see Shabad as Guru, because if we did we would have much much more sadkar for each tuk of Gurbani in whatever format.
