vaheguru je ka khalsa vaheguru je ke fateh jeeee...

sangat jeeo dhass needs ideas of topics which should be taught to children aged 6-15.

bear in mind:

the class which these will be taught in is only approximately 50-60minutes a week...

we have approximately 50-52 classes a year(approximately 1 class per week), so we need 50-52 topics so that the children don't get bored and don't stop attending ..

the class isn't jathabanthi based so its generall...

so sangat jee a small request is please put your topic ideas forward with resources if possible...

otherwise just topics would be great...but make sure the topic is:

suitable for kids...

and more importantly SIKHI based!!!!!!!

thank you for your time...

take hukamnamas with them, really make it understood that Maharaj is alive and sitting right there, just say they can ask guroo sahib anything, the hukamnama back will give them faith.

this kind of thing should really be instilled first and foremost. A sikhs realtionship with Guroo Sahib is what defines the level of your sikhi.

Get a projector and you can put up a projection and teach them about the Gurus, Martyrs etc. One thing the kids do like is splitting them in two groups of two and doing a pop quiz...You act as the host and ask the questions, Group one have to shout Waheguru as there buzzer and Group to Satnam. The kids always loved this, and it is a way of making them remember what they learnt the when before.

There are websites out there that have presentations prewritten,

www.telkhalsa.co.uk has some

Sikhroots.com aswell

This give the kids something to look at instead of just watching someone speak at them; try to make them laugh aswell as this will keep them awake and alert.

Hope this helps!

veer jee amazing idea BUT one issue is that dhass hasn't yet been blessed with that high standard sevaa at the moment...

I think you should start from the basics. The kids need good foundation to start with... I'd suggest something like:

15 mins - Hukamnama from SikhiToTheMax, can just go through it in English and discuss.

10 mins - A bit of life story about whichever Guru Sahib your on.

10 mins - Practical activity related to whatever topic next Sakhi is on.

10 mins - Sakhi about that Guru Sahib

15 mins - Group talk, how they can instill above info in their life, any issues they facing, finish with couple mins of simran etc.

This way, the kids will learn more in depth by delving into each topic and with the Sakhi's, they will remember the stuff too. You could spend 5-10 weeks per Guru if you wanted.

So real example could be to start with could be:

15 mins - Hukamnama and discussion

10 mins - Talk about who Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is and how/when he came to this world and why He needed to come.

10 mins - Let kids play game of battleships (where you cant see other persons board and you got to chose spot on board to sink their ship)

10 mins - Talk about how just like it is hard to play that game without seeing what you are aiming at, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to this dark world to show us light/truth, to show us the way. Could tell the sakhi about how Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji refused to wear the Janao sacred Hindu Thread and rejected rituals and just remembered Gods Name.

15 mins - Questions/ answers, discussion and finish with few minutes mool mantar or Vaheguru Simran.

Next week, similar thing but revolve around Sakhi of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Sacha Sauda Langar.

Sounds like great seva you are doing... where abouts are you?

children aged 6-15?? thats a significant age gap

altho sikhi doesnt come with age, it would probably be best to split the class up into 6-9 and 10-15 or something similar (if you have enough people to run the classes)

stuff that should definitely be covered:

+ 10 Gurus (basic info, and their contribution etc)

+ Sikh History (this will probably end up tieing in with the above quite alot)

+ Gurbani (how to do satkaar of Gurbani, hukamnameh, keertan/simran etc)

it would probably be best if you didnt sit and talk too much. limiting the use of powerpoint presentations could also be effective (if ur gonna use them keep them short, 4/5 slides max) try and keep it really light, humour is good and also a few pictures- limit the writing, just put down the essential stuff bullet pointed.

younger kids would probably respond better to activities such as making posters, doing presentations, jus stuff that is interactive rather than sitting and listening all the time (sitting and listening is good, just as long as its not excessive). keertan and simran to begin with and finish with.

another thing u could do is storytelling, but make it interesting. rather than sitting there jus telling a story, you could get someone to act bits out etc and do it outside on a sunny day. tell them a story and leave details out. like tell them a story about the sahibzadeh but dont actually say 'its about the sahibzadeh' then get them to find out who the story was about. then the kids come back the next week, and give their answers in on a piece of paper, and u pick out the right answers, put the in a box and pick out 2/3, and those people get prizes.

you could do a treasure hunt type thing. give the kids a piece of paper with about 10 or so questions on it, and the answer will leade them to a place in the building where a question will be left. they collect the question and answer it. the team who collects the most questions and answers them correctly wins and gets a sikhi related prize. if u prepared this beforehand it wouldnt take long, u could giv them about 30-35 mins. i know this has major flaws in it but it sounds like fun tongue.gif it may not work, but it was a cool idea lol

i remember a while back on the sweet sikhi radio slot a sevadar frm sevatothemax was talking about templates (or something to tht extent) for classes, so u could try getting in touch with them.

let us know how it goes :)

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
