How To Sit In Chounkree Longer?

Recommended Posts

The tingling and heaviness in the feet is due to pressure on the nerve that wraps around the outside of the leg just below the knee and pressure here will cause a temporary stunning of that nerve ('common fibular nerve paraesthesia' - just google it if you are really interested).

The other problems are general aches and discomfort due to pressure on parts of the body. if you were to remain still for 2h you would develop pressure sores on dependant areas - naturally we shift and shuffle about a bit.

Therefore avoid sitting crossed legs for too long, otherwise you'll get the pins & needles sensation. Secondly use common sense and alter your position without causing inconvenience to your neighbour and without causing offence to Maharaj ie do not point feet in that direction.

Poor circulation only comes into play in those with dire health ie heavy smokers for 20y with peripheral vascular disease (hopefully no one here then! - but can also affect those who have had diabetes for an number of years). The other top tip would be to loose weight if overweight - again common sense.

Finally if you are really uncomfortable, then do matha tek, go out of the durbar and stretch your legs for five minutes before returning.

one thing I can tell any teenager about sitting in chonkri, is is that during your growth spurts make sure you stretch and sit in chonkri at least 5 mins each day.

During my "growth" period i didnt go to the gurdwara much and didnt sit in chonkri for ages so ended up not being able to do it all!

Had to stretch my legs and groin every night since then to be able to do it again, lol.

My two cents just do groin/other leg streches every day to better your chonkri "stamina".

I nearly chocked on my spit when I saw the pics!! lol

About chunkri...only after 2 hours my legs start to go...Thats when I swap them around. So in total I can sit for 4 hours. What your supposed to do is sit in a correct posture (back straight, arms in front of you etc)

However if you want to sit forever then you do the Rishi posture where you have both legs off the ground!!

rishi.jpg

My trouble is that I can get one leg on top but then the other leg does not go up....but basically get both feet off the ground and you will be sorted!!!

I swear so many embarrassing things have happened to me cos my legs go numb. Once I was in gurdwara for 5 hours and I kept swapping legs and then I thort omg I cannot feel anything. So i decided I should get up. My leg was numb and you know its really hard to walk on a numb leg cos u cannot feel the ground....and so u end up with a limp.

Anyways I managed to walk fairly okay (had a small limp but it wasn't that obvious)...I was kinda able to judge and coordinate the distance to the ground. When I reached the main walking bit where everyone does matha tek something terrible happened. Can you believe my leg gave way and I fell!!

It was so embarrassing. To make it worse I was wearing a butterfly suit so it went up in the air. Everyone just looked at me and even the kirtani had a pause. Moral of story : If you sit for 5 hours thru the pain ure gonna find it hard to walk, so jst take a break.
