Practice What You Preach

I am a 19 year old young adult from New Zealand. I went through a period a year ago where i lost total faith that there was a creator and started becoming very very depressed. I can put this down to a rough upbringing where i only started living with my mother since i was 12 and have never met my biological father but i call my step father my father. Since i accepted Sikhism at face value and had no understanding partly because as a kid there was no one to guide me and also i take blame for not asking enough questions.

Now Since mid last year i became depressed because i thought religion was stupid and was thinking that i have a crap life. So the time came where i started university this year and as the weeks went by i started enjoying my studies and decided i will trim my beard. Now doing so caused a big stir amoungst my family... not with my parents because they are understanding. However my family members were all in a mood at what i had done. So my uncle said to me and my parents that i have turned to the 'bad side' and that i need 'help' and that it is best if i come stay with him. So now i am living with my uncle and aunty who are very religious i must say. However my two cousins, both their daughters shave their legs and arms.... So it occured to me that this is bulls****! how can someone tell me not to cut my beard when thier own kids are shaving... I really want to move back home and my parents would like me to.

Since i had little knowledge on Sikhi my close friend gave me some books by philosophers and Sikhi books. I also starting reading books by Osho, which has totally changed me and i am much happier now. I believe in the Creator and try to meditate on his name and i find i am much much happier with my life. I dont believe in living my life by a religion, but searching for the truth myself.

Now what i wanted to ask you or get your opinion on what i should do is... Should i tell my uncle and aunty that, look you either practise what you preach and that i think im fine and should go back to living with my parents... or should i just pretend that everything is fine but bottle up my thoughts inside??

Your views are much appericiated :)

In all honesty I wouldn't bother saying your daughters do this.....it will just cause rift and you know how one little thing can sour everything. Ignore that bit and just say uncle ji I am much better now and so I am going home and add in a little bit about how ure mum wants you and how thankful you are for his company. Then just leave.....go home and rather than looking for role models become the best you can. Look inside.

Just tell your relatives (uncle/aunt) that whatever reasons you have been called in their home , the maryada is not even followed in their family , and tell all the thoughts you have in your mind , and then tell them that you think its best that you should go back to your parents , then listen to him patiently , As you say he's a religious person , he will surely tell you the best solution , if he has saccha faith in the Gurus and The Bani, his wisdom will give you the solution.

P.S For God's Sake , leave Osho , start reading Sikhi Kathas , attend kirtans , search out gurudwaras in your area. You think religion is crap because you are looking for your religion in other people , and when you find they are not following it , you think its garbage. Look inside yourself , don't escape Sikhi , I think you're blessed that you were born in a Sikh Family , I think I am. , I guess everyone should be...Be a Lion , tell the world what you stand for.

Thanks for the advise. By the way i do read Sikhi books and listen to Kirtan. I play kirtan and other meditation music when i try and meditate on his name. Im not looking for religion in other people. I am happy anyone who is happy follwing a religon but i just don't like it when people FORCE it on you. I mean Sikh Gurus gave their lives so that people could be free to choose what they wanted to believe in. They gave their lives so that Sikhs could have a religoin. I don't think Religion is garbage but i think it blinds you from searching the truth. I stand for freedom of choice, because i have no obligatgions to anyone and i should be a free man to lead the the life i want to live.

Regards

Firstly its not under several forums under different names. Its on three forums. And is there a problem with posting it on more than one forum?

thanks

I guess that is a good way of thinking , and I am pretty sure , during your journey of living like a free man , you will come to know everything leads to one truth.one God an you eventually know that being a mere manmukh , you can't get to the truth without the Guru . The state of mind in which you are , I have been there , done that , Now am a devout Sikh. :gg: All the best .

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
