PUNJABNEWSLINE FLASH-Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti resigns

AMRITSAR: Jatehdar Akal Takht (highest Sikh temporal seat of Sikhs) Gyani Joginder Singh Vedanti on Tuesday resigned from his post allegedly under pressure from SAD Supremo Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal.

vedanti.jpgVedanti said that last night Bhaur along with SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him and asked him to tender resignation.Vedanti said that both Bhaur and Mehta told him that now it was difficult for him to continue as Jatehdar Akal Takht, hence he should resign. The reports said that Vedanti had handed over his resignation to the SGPC General secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur.

When asked about the reason behind the resignation, Vedanti said that he would detail everything in the evening but not yet due to certain reasons.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar has said that resignation of Vedanti has been received and it would be placed in the executive meeting at Kurukeshtra in Harayana for its acceptance thereafter any information in this regard to be made before the media today afternoon.

The reliable sources said that Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had himself told Vedanti telephonically to step down otherwise he would be sacked in the executive meeting of SGPC to be held today at Kurukeshtra.

Vedanti who had always stood by his political masters has in the recent past changed his tune and started showing signs of resistance on vital issues. Even his stand against Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh head of dera Sacha Sauda had hardened.

After he had given pro-khalistan speech in US and then in Akal takht during blue star anniversary, i knew it would happen and i was wondering - when? Also he is at loggerheads with Giani Iqbal Singh who is BJP man. Maybe BJP pressured Badal who is RSS man to make Vedanti go.
WOOHOO :awesome :p   :WOOHOO: bring on a new PANTHIC JATHEDHAR

i don't think it will happen. All Jathedars are political puppets of the govt. in power. The new Jathedar will be one who can accomodate BJP controlled Akali Dal. it is not 'panth' but political parties that decide who is going to be jathedar.

I do not think Iqbal singh is BJP man.Dasam granth controversey is created by BJP/RSS.They are the ones to lend support to heretics like kala afghna.Any person defending Dasam granth is not RSS man.

Akal Takht Jathedar Vedanti resigns to evade sacking,

Giani Gurbachan Singh is acting Jathedar

Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti:

What an exit!

AMRITSAR: In typical Badalshahi style of politics, Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Monday night was forced to resign from his post, resignation collected in person by two Badal loyalists from his residence in Amritsar, and Giani Gurbachan Singh, till now the head granthi of Darbar Sahib, was anointed as the acting jathedar within hours. The resignation was accepted by the SGPC Executive Committee meeting in Kurukshetra which also named the acting incumbent.

Veadnti's resignation, which was not being exactly expected these days, was collected by SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur just hours before the key meeting of the executive of the SGPC at Kurukshetra.

Vedanti told reporters that Bhaur and SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him on Monday night demanding the resignation. A source close to Bhaur said Vedanti duly handed it over without making a fuss after confirming that it was indeed Badal himself who had sent the men seeking resignation.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was present when the resignation was placed before the executive meeting at Kurukeshtra. The resignation was accepted and Giani Gurbachan Singh's name was announced as acting jathedar. Akali Dal sources said in case of any refusal of Vedanti to resign, he would have been sacked on Tuesday.

Giani Gurbachan Singh, Acting Jathedar

(Acting on whose behalf?)

Vedanti's tenure at the top temporal seat of the Sikh community, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, remained tumultuous throughout and his hardline stance against the RSS seemed to have perturbed the ruling Akali Dal top brass. However, on the issue of Dera Sauda sadh Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Vedanti's has been a rather soft approach, notwithstanding occasional strong words.

Vedanti was hand-picked by Akali Dal supremo Parkash Singh Badal in 2000 when his predecessor Giani Puran Singh was sacked on March 29, 2000 after a tiff with the then SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur Badal. Earlier, Giani Puran Singh had succeeded after Bhai Ranjit Singh was sacked in a tug of war between Badal and the then SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra.

Sackings and removals of Akal Takht jathedars have been leading to divides between various strains of Sikh community and demands for codification of the Jathedars' powers, privileges and role have been made repeatedly in the recent past.

There was much speculation in the run up to the vote of confidence for the Manmohan Singh government and many sections claimed that Vedanti wanted to issue an appeal in favour of the Sikh premier but was talked out of it. Vedanti had nevertheless said that he and all Sikhs were proud of Dr Manmohan Singh but a hukamnama cannot be issued on a political issue.

While the truth about what proved to be the last straw is now likely to remain in doubt, the Akal Takht jathedar's tenure will have a mixed assessment.

Fever-pitched demands for Vedanti's removal continued throughout his tenure. His skirmishes with the Spokesman newspaper editor also kept him in the news. Recently, he got into an ugly turf war with fellow Jathedar of Takht Patna Sahib Giani Iqbal Singh on the issue of supremacy and Nanakshahi calendar.

Vedanti's relationship with the influential Sant Samaj also remained less than smooth.

During the last three decades, various jathedars like Prof Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh, Giani Puran Singh and Vedanti himself got embroiled with one or the other controversy and the Sikh community often recalls the glorious stories from the era of Nawab Kapur Singh, Jassa Singh, Akali Phula Singh with nostalgia.

More often than not, pliability and notions of political loyalty to dominant political denomination have been seen as key criteria for the job. Akal Takht jathedars are appointed by the SGPC executive committee and qualifications and privileges exist in the realm of the grey.

On the positive side, Vedanti had issued an open appeal asking the Akali leadership and the Sikh sangat to work for the release of death row convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, had issued a hard hitting hukumnama against the RSS and advocated against summoning serving and former jathedars before the Akal Takht.

Akal Takht Jathedar quits

CHANDIGARH: Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Tuesday quit his post alleging he was asked to resign by a top functionary of the SGPC, a statutory body that manages affairs of Sikh shrines.

Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar, however, said Vedanti quit on health grounds.

He resigned "voluntarily citing ill-health as the reason", Makkar told reporters in Haryana's Kurukshetra district after a meeting of the SGPC executive committee.

The meeting, lasting three hours, accepted Vedanti's resignation and appointed Golden temple Head Priest Gurbachan Singh as acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs.

Earlier in the day, Vedanti, the senior high priest in a group of five that governs Sikhism from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, submitted his resignation to SGPC General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur.

When contacted, the top Sikh cleric, who is in Amritsar, said Bhaur along with Rajinder Singh Mehta, a member of the SGPC executive committee, visited his place last night and asked him to resign.

Vedanti declined to give more information leading to his resignation.

Sikh diaspora censures Badal for removing Vedanti as Akal Takht Jathedar

By Ravinder Singh Robin

Amritsar, Aug.5 (ANI): The unceremonious removal of Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC), on Tuesday evoked sharp criticism from the Sikh Diaspora.

Various Sikh bodies trained their guns on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, accusing him of running the SGPC as his own fiefdom.

The SGPC removed Vedanti from the post and replaced him with Giani Gurbachan Singh as the acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht.

This is not the first time that a Jathedar has been removed unceremoniously by the SGPC. The removal of Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode as the Akal Takht Jathedar started the trend of sacking Jathedars. Previously, a Jathedar either resigned or died in office.

Bhai Ranjit Singh, the daring Jathedar of Akal Takht was sacked on April 28,1998 and SGPC installed Giani Puran Singh as the new Jathedar on February 15,1999.Vedanti was appointed as acting Jathedar of Akal Takht on March 28,2000 after the SGPC then led by Bibi Jagir Kaur blamed Giani Puran Singh of violating the maryada (Sikh code of conduct) and sacked him.

Sources informed that in recent times Vedanti’’s statements had caused embarrassment to the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) group. A pro-Khalistan uttering during a visit to the USA, Vedanti’’s absence from India when two Sikhs were killed in clashes with Dera Saucha Sauda followers and his praise of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the confidence vote on July 21 and 22, reportedly led to differences between him and Badal.

Talking to ANI from San Francisco, Dr. Pritipal Singh convener of American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee said that the present working of SGPC not only put the image of the Jathedar at stake, but also compromised the credibility of the SGPC. He said that the Badal family continues to dabble in Gurdwara affairs and politics, which termed as unfortunate.

He said that the Jathedar of the Akal Takht should be independent of all kinds of political and administrative pressures and manipulations and should be so elected that they enjoy the confidence of the entire Sikh Panth.

Talking from Washington D.C. ,Dr. Amerjit Singh Director, Khalistan Affairs Center alleged that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was using the SGPC for his own and his Hindu fundamentalist friends political gains. He said that the way of removal of Jathedar shows that the Akal Takht Jathedar is merely an employ of the SGPC and nothing else.

He urged the Sikh Diaspora to unite and take away the control of the Sri Akal Takht from the clutches of SGPC and the SAD.

Targeting Badal, Dal Khalsaspokesman KanwerPal Singh Bittu said that Badal has shown that he has all the levers of power, be it political or religious, which is very dangerous. He said that the question was not just the removal of Vedanti but the style of functioning of the Akali Dal and its extension counter, the SGPC.

He charged the SGPC of implementing specific rules and guidelines for the working of the Akal Takht and other Takhts, and these were doomed to fail.

Meanwhile SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar who chaired the meeting of executive members of SGPC at Gurdwara Chevin Patshashi, Kurukshetra informed that the executive committee had accepted the resignation and have appointed Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, Giani Gurbachan Singh as acting Jathedar of Akal Takht. We should not be much affected by the removal of a Jathedar. It is a well known fact in political circles that the charava at Gurdwaras is used by Akali Dal for fighting elections. Akali leaders don't even spare the offerings at Darbar Sahib. That is why Amarinder Singh was hard bent on capturing SGPC during his tenure, as he know that without Gurdwara funds Akali Dal Badal will die a natural political death. If anyone has visited the budget passing session of SGPC, he knows all. Akalis fight like mad men, they remove each others turbans and throw juttian at each other, within Darbar sahib complex. Recently Akali leaders took off each others turbans at takht Anandpur Sahib, where Khalsa was founded. Akalis are mad men, most were low lifes before becoming leaders. It suits Badal as foolish men cannot challange his leadership. He lived for eighty years , mismanged Gurdwara funds, lied at Darbar Sahib, uses langar from Darbar sahib during rallies for his birthday celebrations, does all kinds of un-imaginable things in the name of Gurus and after his death his potrait will be installed at Darbar Sahib Mueseum as the greatest leader of Sikhs, alongside our Gurus. The reserved seats for pooran Gursikh students in SGPC run institutions are given to mone Sikhs for bribes, in the name of religion.

Sikhs in India have become what Hindus were when Guru Nanak took birth, morally corrupt.

Vedanti paid price of praising PM: Punjab Congress

CHANDIGARH: Senior Congress leaders from Majha have strongly criticized the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership for unceremoniously removing Joginder Singh Vedanti from post of Jathedar Akal Takht.

In a press statement issued here, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Harminder Singh Gill, Harpartap Singh Ajnala, Sawinder Singh Katnunangal, Jasbir Singh Dimpa said that Jathedar Vedanti paid the price of praising the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

It is pertinent to mention here that Jathedar Vedanti had said that that all Sikhs were proud of Dr Manmohan Singh.

"The praise of Dr. Singh by Akal Takht Jathedar irked the Sukhbir Badal and CM Parkash Singh Badal, thus they unceremoniously removed Jathedar from post", alleged the congress leaders.

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Harminder Singh Gill said, "Being a Sikh we are concerned with the dignity of Akal Takht thus issuing this statement by rising above party lines". He said Badals are running the SGPC as his own fiefdom.

This is not the first time that a Jathedar or Sikh Scholar was removed for praising a congressmen. Earlier the Badals had removed Manjit Singh Calcutta, when he had praised Sonia Gandhi for elevating Dr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister.

They said that present working of SGPC not only put the image of the Jathedar at stake, but also compromised the credibility of the SGPC.

They said that the Badal family continues to dabble in Gurdwara affairs and politics, which termed as unfortunate.

They said that the Jathedar of the Akal Takht should be independent of all kinds of political and administrative pressures and manipulations and should be so elected that they enjoy the confidence of the entire Sikh Panth.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
