After he had given pro-khalistan speech in US and then in Akal takht during blue star anniversary, i knew it would happen and i was wondering - when? Also he is at loggerheads with Giani Iqbal Singh who is BJP man. Maybe BJP pressured Badal who is RSS man to make Vedanti go.
WOOHOO :awesome :p   :WOOHOO: bring on a new PANTHIC JATHEDHAR

i don't think it will happen. All Jathedars are political puppets of the govt. in power. The new Jathedar will be one who can accomodate BJP controlled Akali Dal. it is not 'panth' but political parties that decide who is going to be jathedar.

yeah very true,

Thier is news that jathedar of Akal Takht Joginder Singh Vedanti resigns. He have submitted his resignation to Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee. Could not undertsand why this sudden move. Is it because of his new york speech?

Its a combination of the New York speech and Badal not being happy as well as Sant Samaj not being happy with the way he's handled the Sach Sauda issue and saying he should resign.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti on Monday night resigned from his post. The resignation, which was not being exactly expected these days, was collected by SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur just hours before a key meeting of the executive of the SGPC at Kurukshetra.

The successor is likely to be announced shortly.

Vedanti told reporters that SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta alongwith Bhaur visited him on Monday night demanding the resignation. A source close to Bhaur said Vedanti duly handed it over without making a fuss after confirming that it was indeed Badal himself who had sent the men seeking resignation.

SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar also confirmed the resignation and said it will be placed before the executive meeting at Kurukeshtra. The resignation is likely to be accepted. Giani Gurbachan Singh's name was being mulled over as Vedanti's successor. Akali Dal sources said in case of any refusal of Vedanti to resign, he would have been sacked on Tuesday.

Sackings and removals of Akal Takht jathedars have been leading to divides between various strains of Sikh community and demands for codification of the Jathedars’ powers, privileges and role have been made repeatedly in the recent past.

There was much speculation in the run up to the vote of confidence for the Manmohan Singh government and many sections claimed that Vedanti wanted to issue an appeal in favour of the Sikh premier but was talked out of it.

While the truth is now likely to remain in doubt, the Sri Akal Takht Sahib jathedar’s tenure will have a mixed assessment.

Vedanti’s relationship with Damdami Taksal & Sant Samaj also remained less than smooth.

Fever-pitched demands for Vedanti’s removal continued throughout his tenure. His skirmishes with the Spokesman newspaper editor also kept him in the news. Recently, he got into an ugly turf war with fellow Jathedar of Takht Patna Sahib Giani Iqbal Singh on the issue of supremacy and the Nanakshahi calendar.

During the last three decades, various jathedars like Prof Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh, Giani Puran Singh and Vedanti himself got embroiled with one or the other controversy while the Sikh community often recalls the glorious stories from the era of Nawab Kapur Singh, Jassa Singh, Akali Phula Singh with nostalgia.

More often than not, pliability and notions of political loyalty to dominant political denomination have been seen as key criteria for the job. Sri Akal Takht Sahib jathedars are appointed by the SGPC executive committee and qualifications and privileges exist in the realm of the grey.

On the positive side, Vedanti had issued an open appeal asking the Akali leadership and the Sikh sangat to work for the release of death row convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, had issued a hard hitting hukumnama against the RSS and advocated against summoning serving and former jathedars before Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Sri Harmandir Sahib's HEAD Granthi Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh is currently being signed on as Jathedar Sri Akal Takhat Sahib at Sri Harmandir Sahib as this post is being published.

Gurbachan Singh named acting Akal Takht Jathedar

August 5th, 2008 - 4:21 pm ICT by ANI

By Ravinder Singh Robin

Amritsar, Aug.5 (ANI): Giani Gurbachan Singh was today named the acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, a day after his predecessor, Joginder Singh Vedanti, resigned from the same post.

The Akal Takht is the highest temporal seat of the Sikh community. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (SGPC) had asked for Vedanti’’s resignation on Monday night, and on Tuesday, it accepted it formally.

Earlier, Vedanti told reporters that SGPC General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur and Executive Member Rajinder Singh Mehta had asked for his resignation.

I, without asking any further question, gave them my resignation letter, because they pledged that they were told by the President to collect the resignation and produce it in a meeting of the the SGPC at Kurukshetra on Tuesday, said Vedanti.

Vedanti refused to speak further on the issue, but his secretary, Pritipal Singh, said the former Jathedar would share his views with the media at a later date. (ANI)

Vedanti's differences with SAD over dera Sacha Sauda cost him his job

Tuesday, 05 August 2008

CHANDIGARH: Once again, the Sikhs world over have seen the unceremonial exit of their religious head, Jathedar (high priest) of Akal Takht Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti. The reason is the same-differences with the political masters but issues are different every time. Others shown door in the recent past are Bhai Manjit Singh, Bhai Ranjit Singh, Giani Puran Singh and even Bibi Jagir Kaur who was sacrificed for different political reasons.

It is understood that Vedanti's increasing proximity with hard liner Sikh organisations on the issue of dera Sacha Sauda and his public opinion to vote for Sikh Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh during UPA government's trust vote on July 22 last were key factors that compelled SGPC to pack up Vedanti. The reports said that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had told Vedanti to quit else he will be expelled. The grapevine is that Badal wants to remove political irritants with dera Sacha Sauda and Vedanti didn't fit in his scheme of things.

Vedanti's tenure in the high temporal psot was full of controversies. He was appointed Jathedar of Akal Takht in March 2000 and was considered a pliable person specially cut out for the job to suit the requirements of Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) and SGPC.

Vedanti did his bit to appease the SAD and in the very fist meeting of five high priests on March 29,2000, in an unprecedented move rejected the three `hukamnamas' ( edicts) issued by his dismissed predecessor Puran Singh and `acquitted' all those who were ex-communicated from the Sikh Panth.

Giani Puran Singh had replaced Bhai Ranjit Singh. In series of events in March 1999, Bhai Ranjit Singh had sacked his predecessor Bhai Manjit Singh and excommunicated Parkash Singh Badal who was exonerated by Giani Puran Singh who further excommunicated the then SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur and some head priests.

Vedanti's decision to annul the edicts issued by Giani Puran Singh had benefited Bibi Jagir Kaur and Jathedars of Takht Keshgarh Sahib Manjit Singh and of Damdama Sahib Kewal Singh and Akal Takht head Granthi Bhagwan Singh. SGPC executive members Satnam Singh, Raghujit Singh Gora and Pritam Singh Bhatia and member Jaswinder Singh were readmitted to the Sikh fold.

Vedanti' stand on Nanakshahi calender introduced by Bibi Jagir Kaur in 1999 had irked many in the Sikh religion as he had allowed certain amendments under pressure from Sant Samaj. He was instrumental in change of certain historic dates related with birth and demise of Sikh gurus. He was also blamed for working in tandem with RSS to harm the interests of Sikhs.

Vedanti also came under fire for editing controversial script of "Gur Bilas Patshahi 6" reprinted by the Dharam Parchar Committee of the SGPC, Amritsar. Gur Bilas Patshahi 6 has regularly been recited in many Gurdwaras in the past. Although Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti and co-editor Prof Amarjit Singh had admitted that it contains some denigrating information, even then they have not tried to distinguish that how much is true and how much goes against the Gurbani and Sikhism leaving the readers in confusion.

On another issue of Dasam Granth, Vedanti had issued an edict to stop any debate on it since a major section of Sikhs found the contents of Dasam Granth objectionable and not tenable under Sikh traditions. The Sikh hardliners have been demanding ban on Dasam Granth while the members of Sant Samaj have been advocating recognisition for it.

In the recent past Vedanti had taken hard stand against dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh and has joined the hard liners to spearhead an agitation for his arrest. His remarks that SAD MP's shall vote in favour of Sikh Prime Minister didn't suit Akalis politically. It is learnt that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal had reprimanded Vedanti on his comments on trust vote.

Giani Gurbachan Singh appointed new Akal Takht Jathedar

AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC) on Tuesday appointed Giani Gurbachan Singh as new Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs here following resignation by Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti owing differences with SGPC and Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) over the issue of Dera Sacha Sauda.

The SGPC executive committee which met today at Kurukshetra accepted the resignation of Vedanti and appointed Giani Gurbachan Singh in his place. Giani Gurbachan Singh is presently head priest of Darbar Sahib in Amritsar.

The reports said that Vedanti had handed over his resignation to the SGPC General secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur late Monday night when Bhaur along with executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited his home in Golden Temple complex and conveyed him the message of SAD supremo Parkash Singh Badal.

Vedanti Tuesday morning informed the media that last night Bhaur along with SGPC Executive member Rajinder Singh Mehta visited him and asked him to tender resignation. Vedanti said that both Bhaur and Mehta told him that now it was difficult for him to continue as Jatehdar Akal Takht, hence he should resign.

The reliable sources said that Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had himself told Vedanti telephonically to step down otherwise he would be sacked in the executive meeting of SGPC to be held today at Kurukeshtra.

Vedanti's resignation has raised many questions in the mind of Sikh sangat. It is belived that Vedanti was sacked for taking the side of radical Sikh organisations on the issue of dera Sacha Sauda and he had also favoured to vote for Sikh Prime Minister during trust vote of UPA government at center on July 22 last.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
