The udasis were started by baba sri chand ji under the hukam of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Baba sri chand ji went to learn and master yoga, which he did by the age of 16. the udasi form of yoga takes 100 years to master but baba ji mastered it in only 16 years. At this point, udasis were considered part of sikhi. Baba sri chand ji also gave the seat of Raj Yog to Guru Raam Daas Ji. This is the highest seat of yoga from the 6 schools of yoga. The only person before Guru Ji to receive the position of Raj Yog was krishan (Vishnu avtar) in duapar yug. (Take not that this Raj Yog is does not give any relation between Guru Ji and krishan avtar. Yoga is a spiritual form).

At this time udasis would not be as they are today – smearing themselves with ash, begging on the river banks of hindu rivers, bearing the marks of vishnu or shiva on their foreheads. But they did not keep their hair.

At the time of Akaali Nihang Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Guru Ji called upon the udasis to help in a war against the invading afgan army. The udasis agreed to help Guru Ji in battle, but a short while before the war, the udasis ran away out of fear. Guru Ji said that if they had turned their back on HIM, HE would turn his back on them. One of the udasis remained and went to Guru Ji and begged that He not remove them from the panth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, or else they will wither and die without the Guru. The udasi said that he will fight on behalf of all udasis on Guru Ji’s side. Guru Ji accepted this and taught the udasi ONE block with a shield and ONE attack with a sword. Needless to say in battle, the udasi, with the kirpa of Guru Ji, caused a lot of damage to the afgan army. And it was because of this single udasi (who’s name I cant remember – sorry) that the udasis remained part of sikhi.

But as time went on, with the oppression from the hindus, udasis found it easier to turn more hindu-like. They now cut their hair, beg, smear ash over their bodies and bear the hindu signs on their foreheads.

Hope that this helps with info on udasis.

More info on Mahant Kirpal from http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Mahant_Kirpal_Das

Mahant Kirpal Das, was a leader of the Udasis. The Udasis were originally a branch of the Sikh faith started by Guru Nanak's son, Baba Sri Chand. They were celebate and wandered about the forests in the same way that Hindu Sadhus do, even today, half naked. They wore only a loin cloth and had no fighting skills. A large group of them had traveled to Nathan with the Guru and his Sikhs. They often aided in introducing people to the Sikh faith. They had been living at the Guru's Darbar and eating at the Guru ka Langar at Paonta. When the Guru heard of the attack the Pahari Rajas were planning he ordered even the Udasis to arm themselves and participate in the Battle of Bhangani. Shamelessly they all disappeared in the night, they had no intention of fighting.

Only their leader Mahant Kirpal Das stayed to aid the Guru. Mounted on a horse and armed with only a small kirpan and a huge club the Mahant clothed only in his loin cloth presented quite a sight. Guru Gobind Singh tried to disuade him from fighting, but finally yeiled when he realized how determined he was. As the battle began he was the cause of much amusement, though he was totally inexperienced in the art of war he challenged Hayat Khan the Pathan chief, one of the Pathans who had recently deserted Guru Gobind Singh ji's forces. Flourishing his heavy club he charged at Hayat Khan, who dealt him a heavy blow with his sword. Kirpal Das received it on his club. Then rising in his stirrups and shouting loudly, "Sat Sri Akal", he struck Haiyat Khan's head with his club so mightily that his skull was cleaved.

The scene is described by Guru Gobind Singh in the, Bachitra Natak in an eloquent simile. He wrote:

"Mahant Kirpal, raging, lifted his club and struck the fierce Hayat Khan on his head, upon which his brains spilt forth as butter flowed from the Gopi's pitcher broken by Damodara." Mahant Kirpal Das was later the keeper of the Udasi dera at village Hehar in Ludhiana district. Where he was visited by Guru Gobind Singh after the battle of Chamkaur. He, as a mark of respect, helped carry the palanquin on which the Guru was carried to the next village of Rajoana.

Yes Guru Gobind Singh taught Kirpal Dass the simple Varhaar (wild boar) pentra. It is the pentra that was taught to the inexperienced singhs that came from the pinds.

This simple pentra allowed smashing the opposing weapon followed by smashing the opposing person.

But another version of the story I have heard actually consisted of Guru ji joking about with the udaasi sadhus about joining the fight (since they were sadhus who had never picked up a weapon). The udaasis ran away except for Kirpal Dass, who had taken Guru Sahib seriously. Guru ji told him he was joking, but Kirpal Dass said he had taken it as Guru hukam.

so this is when Guru ji taught Kirpal Dass the pentra.

When Kirpal Dass went on to face Hayat Khan, Hayat Khan saw Kirpal Dass as being just a sadhu instead of a kshatriya/warrior such as a nihang singh they were laughing at him. But Kirpal Dass riled him up and got Hayat Khan ro come and attack him. This led to Hayat Khan attacking recklessly because he wasn't worried. This is when Kirpal Dass used the skills he had learnt from the pentra Khan's sword and then his head.

The Panth owes an eternal gratitude to both the Udasin Sampryada - which was responsible for replenshing the Singhs during the nightmarish early 18th C.

It was the non Singh identity and harmless Sadhu garb/life that allowed Udasin Sadhus to freely roam the Desh, do Gurmat Parchar using their expertise of Indic religions - thus converting hundreds of thousands of Hindus into fearless Singhs who rushed to join and replenish the diminishing ranks. When Sikhniyan said to Mir Mannu 'the more you cut, the more we'll grow'. take a moment to spare a thought - how did we grow... all is Vahegurus apaar kirpa - Baba Sri Chand stands tall as a Sikh personality - and was respected by Guru Sahiban - his mission still produced great Sikh vidvaans today - from whom we can learn many secrets contained within Aad Guru Maharaj.

The constant neophyte propoganda on this forum is very sad to see - what a sad state of affairs, still good to see that not all is lost.
