1. Nitnem (Daily religious observance)

One should always do 'Nitnem'. It is the treasure, asset, wealth and property of a sikh.

"Amrit Vailey Uth Kae jaae Ander Dariaao Nahuande Sahaj Samadh Agaadh Vich Ek Mun Hoae Gur Jap Japande,Mathe Tikke Lal Lae Sadh Sangat Chal Jaae Behande,Sabad Surat Liv Leen Hoae Satgur Bani Gaae Sunande,Bhaae Bhagat Bhai Varetmaan Gur Sewa Gurpurb KarandeSanjhe Sodar Gavana Mun Male MilandeRaat Kirat Sohila Kar Aarti Parshad VandandeGurmukh Sukh Fal Piram Chakhande." (Bhai Gurdas Ji)

It is the sacred obligation of every baptised Sikh to daily recite at least the following five banies (Holy Hymns) of Nitnem :Early Morning : Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Sudha Swaiyae, Chaupei, Anand Sahib followed by Ardas (offering prayer)Evening : Rehraas SahibNight : Kirtan Sohila

"Gursikh Rahat Sunho Hae Meet Parbhate Uth Kar Hit CheetWaheguru Gurmantra Su Jaap Kar Ishnan Parae Jap JaapSandhiya Samae Sunae Rehraas Kirtan Katha Sunnae Har YaasIn Meh Nem Ju ek Karaae So Sikh Amarpuri Meh Jaae" (Bhai Nandlal Ji)

Sant Ji Maharaj Also preached that one should recite Nitnem before coming to the morning Dewan (holy congregation) otherwise he fails to do it afterwards.

2. Meditation on the Divine Name is the Prime righteousness of all human beings.

"Jinee Aaesa Har Naam Na Cheteo Se Kahe Jag Aayae Ram Raje" (450)

"Sodhat Sodhat Sodh Beechara Bin Har Bhajan Nahi Chhutkara" (260)

3. Wondrous power of meditation.

All the time continuous meditation on the Divine Name with full devotion and concentration, creates a wondrous power that is keeping billions of Suns, Moons, spheres and the entire creations of the Universe moving.

"Naam Japat Kot Soor Ujjaraa Binsae Bhram Andheraa" (700)

Sant Ji Maharaj uttered these words when an engineer was showing him a power plant where electricity was being generated by fast rotation of the dynemo.

4. Method of Nam - Simran (Meditation)

Feel the presence of the Almighty within, with full faith and devotion, recite the Divine Name with the tongue in the beginning - the lips and the tongue continue gently moving up and down and slowly go on uttering 'Waheguru', 'Waheguru' at a stretch with love and attention; then by and by continue uttering 'Waheguru', 'Waheguru', gently with the tip of the tongue touching the palate and the lips remaining almost still; in the third stage with breathing - 'Wahe' should go along with the breath while inhaling and 'Guru' should emerge alongwith the breath while exhaling.

"Bahar Bhitter Eko Janaho Eh Gur giam Batai" (684)

By reciting the Divine Name in this way and after continuous intense meditation, the fourth stage is bestowed upon the searcher in which the Divine word and the devoted mind become one and merge.

"Kabir Too Too Karta To Hoohaa Mujh Meh Raha Na Hoohn.Jab Aappa Par Ka Mit Gayaa Jat Dekhau tat Too" (1375)

But the essential requirement of all these steps of Nam-Simran is that one should do it realizing the presence of Akal Purakh within and every where.

"Gur Kee Murat Mun Meh Dhiaan.Gur Kae Shabad Mantar Mun Maan.Gur Kae Charan Ridae Lae Dharon.Gur Parbrehm Sada Namaskaro" (864)

5. The occult powers (ridh-sidh) are of no avail.

The realization of God consciousness, 'Atam-Pad' is a far higher stage.

"Ridh sidh Sabh Moh hae Naam Naa Vasse Mun Aayee" (593)

"Achar Chare Tan Sidh Hoi Sidhi Te Budh Paee.Prem Ke Ser Laage Tan Bhiter Taan Bhrum Kateyaa Jaayee" (607)

"Santa Sangat Paayeea Jit Jamke Panth Na Jaeeyai" (132)

"Gur Satgur Daatte Panth Battaiya Har Milyaa Aaye Prabh Meri.Andin Anand Bhaiya Vadbhagi Sabh Aas Puji Jan Keri" (170)

"Mere Heeare Preet Ramrai Ki Gur Marag Panth Bataiya" (172)

11. One should not make an appeal for money is Sangat in the holy presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

If everybody contributes his 'Daswandh' (One tenth of one's income) there will be no shortage of funds and all the programmes will run smoothy.

"Ghal Khai Kich Hathon Deh Nanak Rah Pacchane Sayee" (1245)

12. In holy congregation, Ardas (prayer) need to be performed briefly and the requests too be short.

"Vin Boliaa Sabh Kich Janda Kis Aagee Keechai Ardas NanakGhat Ghat Eko Vartada Sabad Kare Pargaas" (1420)

Sant Ji Maharaj also used to advise that it is not appropriate to stand with a naked sword in hands before Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji while offering prayer (Ardas). It is befitting to make a request with folded hands before the Master.

13. One should always use one's tongue for meditation and praising the bounties of the Almighty.

It should not be used for evil speaking, back-biting, uttering hateful words, or bestowing good fortunes and curses.

"Rasna Japti Toohee Toohee" (1215)

"Rasna Japae Na Nam Til Til Kar Katiai" (1363)

"Kaetae Kaheh Vakan Keh Keh Jawna Ved Kaheh Vakhiaan Ant Na Pawna Pareea Nahi Bhed Bujhia Pawna" (148)

One who want to make a speech, his lecture would be based on his egoism or cleverness but one who does not have such a craving, he would be guided in his lecture by the Almighty and words uttered by him would flow smoothly from his inner soul.

Sant Baba Karam Singh (Banur Sahib)

Head of the Sahib Singh Bedi Sampardai

"Adi Guru Granth Sahib ji is a Golden Ocean filled with Rubies and Pearls, to partake of these Spiritual Gems we need the Divine Grace of Holy Men who have immersed themselves in it's blissful waves of God-Consciousness."

"Gurbani is not mere words, Gurbani is Shabd-Swaroop which means it is the Spiritual Melody of the Divine Music of God, the souls of Saints ascend to Heaven by becoming absorbed in this heavenly current, it is like a river of bliss from paradise which has descended to earth in the divine form of Sri Guru Granth Sahib--how can we then estimate the power of Gurbani?"

"It is limitless, it has come from the divine rays of God's joy;

it thus contains the quintessence of all celestial peace, so by reciting it with full attention and a clean heart--that same serenity can be attained by anyone, and all of the qualities it praises come to reside in the spiritual heart of such a one, by meditating with love upon Gurbani one is speaking directly with the Creator--for these holy words have their source in God, this is why even Saints use this divine channel of absolute truth to heal others."

"the divine jewels of Gurbani are priceless, they cannot be compared with mere worldly treasures, Maharaja Dalip Singh embraced Christianity because he was deaf to the nectar flowing from Gurbani, he thought he would get peace from Christianity and that he would be treasured by so converting--but Queen Victoria was only interested in his diamonds, in his wealth and power, but there are millions of Koh-i-Noor diamonds shining from each divine ang of Gurbani!"

"It was only after years of torment and suffering in a foriegn land that Maharaja Dalip Singh began to re-read Gurbani and get solace for his soul by re-joining the Sikh Faith"

A Nihang of Buddha Dal said the following regarding the divine influence of Akhand Paaths of Adi Guru Granth ji and Dasam Granth ji to celebrate shaheed memorial days:

"The spiritual atmosphere that we create here on earth when we undertake holy recitations of Gurbani is so great that the divine immortal martyrs who reside in paradise come by the thousands to invisibly hover and get the divine darshan and audible bliss of hearing the Divine Gurbani--can you imagine, gods and angels even yearn to hear Gurbani, they even flee the pleasures of paradise to listen to it--how unlucky are we humans if we do not also partake of these holy recitations"

Above Provided by Valli Singh

Sant Darbara Singh of Lopon Wale:

"By having the divine darshan of Adi Guru Granth Sahib ji and the holy hearing of it's hymns--the sins of millions of past lives are obliterated"

"by reading and listening to the amar bachans or immortal praises of Gurbani and by enshrining then in one's heart--the mortal man becomes immortal"

"make a rosary of praises strung upon the light of Gurbani and meditate on it so that the sun of enlightenment effaces all of your pains"

Akali Baba Mitt Singh Jee

"Sriman Akali Nihang Baba Mitt Singh ji is seen as being the Mahan Sant of the Akali Nihang Singh Khalsa Panth, Babaji's intense meditations on the meanings of Gurbani from childhood elevated him to full God-Consciousness in his early youth. At this time Babaji was devoted only to solitary meditation in the vicinity of Gurdwara Patshiah Chievian, Raqba Ludhiana; Babaji at first preserved silence and would not speak to anyone as he wanted to continually be absorbed in the Divine Presence; however as more and more sevaks came to glean wisdom from Babaji, he adopted the practise of speaking only through direct quotes from Gurbani so as to avoid speaking of worldly matters; if the Singh talking to Babaji responded with a similar verse from Gurbani, the conversation would continue and blossom with more and more parallel verses fromGurbani until Babaji's divine purpose and deep perspective were fully communicated."

Nihang Sher Singh, Buddha Dal

The Armour Of Shaheeds

"The Ancient Sikhs such as Baba Deep Singh ji and Nawab Kapoor Singh Virk and Akali Phoola Singh ji lived on Gurbani as if it were their vital life current, in fact these and many of the Shaheeds or holy martyrs were in the habit of adorning their armor, swords and personal effects with quotes from Gurbani, thus we have at the Takht discuses of Baba Deep Singh which are inscribed with verses from the Gurus, and daggers and swords of the Tenth Guru which and engraved with Japji Sahib and Jap Sahib in beautiful silver letters, at Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib there is also a shield of Guru Gobind Singh ji which is painted with the insignia of Ik Oankar and the Mool Mantar. the armors and weapons of many shaheed Singhs which are preserved in museums also contain inscriptions of Gurbani and thus it can be seen that while making the supreme sacrifice for their faith they had Gurbani enshrined in their hearts, on their divine lips and also carved in steel onto their weapons and body armors so there is a sort of spiritual/mental/physical unity in expressing Gurbani as well as representing it upon one's person."

Baba Basant Singh ji (Johlan Wale)

In the early 1920's Babaji, using his spiritual insight

understood that dark days overshadowed the Panth in the near future,

and so he had five hundred Singhs baptized and he sent them to the

high hills of a forested area in Jallunder to meditate and pray for the Panth

esclusively, everyday they would arise at two in the morning and recite Sukhmani Sahib

in a freezing river, they would then commence their meditations.

Once a Nihang came to see Baba Basant Singh ji

and he lamented to Babaji about the sad state of the Panth under British rule,

Babaji said "Bhai, the state of the Panth is indeed bad, and it will worsen,

but these hard times will be lessened because we have five hundred Singhs as we speak

who have given their lives to meditate and pray solely for the Panth's chardi kala."

Bhai Randhir Singh ji

"During the horrowing tortures of the heros from the Lahore Conspiracy Case in which True Patriots like Bhai Randhir Singh bore burdens of torment and long incarceration in the dingy dungeons of British Imperialism's worst prisons Gurbani was the Singhs only source of comfort.

It so happened that Bhai Randhir Singh from his very arrival in the Multan prison in solitary confinement, could be found reciting hymns from Gurbani, many of the other prisoners were illiterate and had never even been to a Gurdwara, yet slowly but surely they began to read Gutkha Sahibs and recite the hymns like Japji Sahib and Sukhmani Sahib, in fact one of the Sepoys, Sadhu Radha Singh became an ardent Sikh and was praised for his melodious recitations of Sukhmani Sahib which gave strength to his tortured comrades.

Over time many of the prisoners had memorized as many as thirty hymns from Guru Granth Sahib like Attar Singh, and when the British tried to punish them by handling the Gutkhas with unclean hands and eventually depriving the Singhs of them, it was to no avail because as the Singhs had memorized the hymns they now began to shout them louder than ever.

When Bhai Randhir Singh ji was tortured by being shackled in the South Indian heatwave in a dingy cell for days without food or water, he and his comrades maintained strength by reciting Japji Sahib over and over, in fact Bhai Sahib ji said that their weight and health were restored and maintained by the holy word of Gurbani alone and not by any nutrition or physical stimulus.

When some prisoners of this sangat escaped in a daring operation they recited Chandi di // at the top of their lungs, 50 British guards fled for their lives and the 8 Singhs ran to freedom, Bhai Sahib ji who remained in prison continually recited Sukhmani Sahib for their health and freedom.

In fact throughout his darkest hours, Bhai Sahib ji relied only on Gurbani to give him strength, and even when the Judges and Authorities questioned and punished him he would only respond with verses of Gurbani to show that God alone can judge the soul and all is his sweet Will whether it brings pain or pleasure."

Guru's Grace

"Bhai Harbans Lal, president of the Guru Granth Sahib Academy of America has translated the whole of that Sacred Scripture into Shahmukhi, Persian and Arabic scripts for the benefit of many Pakistani, Iraqi, Iranian and Afghanistani Sikhs and religious scholars and readers alike.

Similarly, Jaspal Kaur of Thailand has translated the Guru Granth Sahib into Thai and a Hukamnama is taken every morning in the head Gurdwara in Bangkok in Thai.

Gurbani has also recently been translated into many other foriegn languages such as French, German, Hebrew, Spanish, Bengali, Gujrati and ten other Indian languages--thus spreading the holy hymns of the Guru's worldwide and in as many tongues as mediums."

Power of Money~~~

1. Most of us think that money has a lot of power.

2. We believe that money can give us ever-lasting happiness.

3. That is why through out our life, we struggle to earn money.

4. But can money really give us ever-lasting happiness?

Gurbani reminds us that:

Sukh Naahi Bohte Dhan Khaate (SGGS: 1147)

1. This means that even if we have lot of money, we can not get ever-lasting happiness.

2. Money can give us temporary happiness, but it can not give us permanent happiness.

3. We may not believe in this line of Gurbani.

4. So, let us look at the rich people in this world, and ask these questions:

~ Is every rich person happy?

~ Is every rich person healthy?

~ Is every rich person without tensions?

~ Is every rich person wise and intelligent?

~ Did our Gurus collect wealth for their personal use?

~ If money cannot give us ever-lasting happiness, then how do we get ever-lasting happiness?

Gurbani gives us the answer:

Sarb Sukhaa Har Har Gun Gaaye (SGGS: 1147)

~ Ever-lasting happiness is obtained only by Praising God (Naam Simran).

~ Naam Simran protects us - everywhere and every time.

~ Though Money can be stolen from us, Naam Simran cannot be stolen.

~ We spend a lot of time to collect Money; similarly, we can try and spend sufficient time to collect Naam Simran or Naam Dhan.

Gurbani shows us this method to get ever-lasting happiness.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
