Gurfatheh Khalsa ji..

i'm sure everyones had their own experiences of having racist or silly things said about them.. recently i've had more so than usual, and daas was wondering what would be the right thing to say to the people that say these things? baring in mind they are 16/17 year old goreh and wouldn't care about anything that stood in their way...i dont want to end up starting anything, i just want to be prepared incase this gets worse...part of me just thinks to forget what people say when racist things are said because at the end of the day maharaj ji is by my side all the time...but then it hurts that they are purely like this because of maharajs dastaar, i'm the only singhni in college, and some people aren't so open to that idea it seems..:closedeyes: ...really would appreciate some replies, thank you piyaario..

Firstly, Bhain Ji, It makes me very happy that you are keeping your Dastaar, even though you are the only one in your college to do so :vaheguru: .

As far as the racist comments are concerned, you NEED to keep your teachers (and parents) informed about this. Wearing a dastaar means you belong to the Guru, you are special. VERY FEW Sikh Girls (especially at your age) can do this. And yes, you may need to accept the fact that you will be given racist remarks all of your life. However, you cannot let this affect you. BUT THIS DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IT! Especially in college situations. Keep your teachers informed, have faith in Waheguru.

What people don’t understand they are scared of, which makes them offensive and put up a guard.

Like the post above, you need to inform your teacher(s), Parents and even report it to the police (just in case it gets worse).

Keep a log of what’s said, by who and when, even description of the person, even tho you don’t know their names.

I had a very similar situation with my little sisters she went to a all white school she became very distant from family and friends as a result of the racial bullying. We knew something was wrong, but she wouldn’t open up. Until, she broke down on day. I felt so angry, really wanted to knock some heads together. But violence isn't always the answer.

The school said they would do this and that, but made no real effort to tackle the issue.

So i decided to start picking her up after school every day for a few weeks and just making a presence outside the school.

Think i must have scared the bullies, because shes not had any problems since. I try to pick her up when i can, to make sure they don’t forget she’s got a big scary brother .

Try telling your college see if they can help, if you’re getting no joy report it to the police, take your log with you.

Worse case, you’ve got a lot of scary looking brothers that will be willing to help. :D .

I think racist is the wrong word....you mean prejudiced. I used to get called turbanator.....and apple head!!

Anyways speak to ure headteacher. Tell them the names and he will chat to them. All they will do is hate you but they cannot call u names because the headteacher has said if you tell him they have said anything, no matter how small, he will expel them on the spot and they won't get GCSE's, he won't give them a reference and he will make sure no school accepts them and the police will be told as its verbal assault etc.. So tell ure head teacher. Make sure he scares them properly!

And its actually really good when this happens....as they stay out of ure way. They will hate you and you know that but who cares - they cannot do anything and its not like you wanted to be their friend!

And later on at uni and when you go to work people are really nice. I only ever got bullied at school. I found that if I worked hard in my exams and got to a good uni everyone loved me. I think its because you finally get to meet intelligent people whereas as school you still have the dumb people around.

And to show this a Gora asked me to pronounce my name in the proper punjabi accent and told me off for saying it in the English way! It was so funny but once you meet clever people they are really open minded and interested in new cultures. So my advice is to carry on going, tell ure teacher and one day you'll leave the dumb people behind!

But in my experience you have to go to a top uni and get a top job because people in small jobs still get bullied because they have not met the intelligent people who can see beyond your dastaar, who are open to new cultures, who like travelling etc.

I agree, with Barfi'. It does get better when you get to uni.

Iv been working for almost 5 years, as a IT contractor. I have to date encountered racism twice out of the 10+ companies iv worked for.

The worse was Sandwell NHS PCT, the snr manager rang my mobile without knowing, left me a voice mail lasting a good few mins. Talking to someone else, about me saying various racial remarks.

The second was in Goa, the Indians didn’t realise that i knew hindi. I got called various crap again.

So regardless, you will encounter racism though out your life. It makes you stronger mentally, you need to just stay professional and deal with it the right way. * Few kidney punches do help .. joking *

Fighting is the issue.. im sure next time they see a person with a dastar they will think twice before saying anything.. you may think fighting aint the issue but taking the pi$$ out of a dastar is out of order you let them carry on they will carry on and will makes remark to every1 thinking its funny..

The best you can do is ignore them. Don't say anything back 'cos you're better than that. Plus, you don't want to drop to their level do you.

If it carries on then tell your tutor.
