chaurasi lakh june;

I've always thought of it to be figurative, as in, going through many different incarnations until a human one comes again. But i've been reading some posts and there have been some messages that interpret it in the literal sense.

I'm curious to what your thoughts are?

the guru doesnt make things up, if the guru says 8.4 million incarnations, then sadly for us paapis that is what we have to go through

I believe the phrase '8.4 million junes' came from the hindu vedas. They said there are 4.2 million species on land and 4.2 in water. That's why I think it's figurative and our gurus were only using '8.4 million' because their main preaching audience was hindus and they were familliar with it.

It is essentially figurative, and a reflection of fair accuracy.

In my phylogenetics course it was debated as to how many species are, and have been on the planet.

It is guestimated that current estimates state that there are approximately 10 million types of species, up to 50 million types of species of beings on the planet. With Beetles making up almost 1/5th of the total variations of types of species.

OVer the course of earth history, this may have varied due to extinctions etc.

Surprisingly in one of JanamSakhi's, Guru Nanak is known to have stated that the Moon is approximately 232 000 miles from the Earth.

The moon in reality in its non circular orbit can be anywhere from 222 000 to 252 000 miles from the earth

These fairly accurate values represent means, or standards that can be taken as approximate to Truth to understand the metaphorical concept.

Interesting... Which JanamSakhi is that veerji?

keep in mind how we define "species" and "joon".

science keeps changing the criteria for each scientific term, so it's not set in stone. based on how you define "specie", you can have any where from 2 million to 20 million species.

The 8.4 million incarnations include rocks, clouds and other non-living joons. So don't use our current scientific understanding as the benchmark for truth and validity of Gurbani.
