There was tension in the Golden Temple complex here today.

A drug addict identified as Harpreet Singh Sunny, resident of Shivala Bhaiyan here, took water from sarovar (holy tank) in a flask and threw it on the granthi and Guru Granth Sahib at Akal Takht. The sangat and SGPC’s task force overpowered him. He was beaten up and taken to room number 52 of the Golden Temple parkarma. When he was being handed over to the police, activists of radical Sikh organisations gathered there and foiled attempt of the SGPC to hand over him to the police. They were raising slogans against the SGPC and the police who had failed to probe an earlier incident. The agitated youth were guarding the serai where alleged culprit was kept. They wanted to conduct the investigation. They also stopped cameramen from taking pictures.

The Deputy Commissioner and the SSP reached the spot. Bhagwant Singh, DC, said the culprit was still under the influence of drug and would be handed over to the police.

SGPC president Avtar Singh left for Amritsar on hearing of the incident. Describing the incident as “most unfortunate”, he alleged the police was still keeping the SGPC in the dark about the previous incidence.

The SSP said the father of the apprehended person had been dead and mother’s name is Kawaljit Kaur.

Gurbachan Singh, Jathedar, Akal Takht, reached the site and formed a five-member committee to probe the incident.

this is getting out of control now. we have guru ghars burning down left and right, maharaj giving shaheedi by sitting through fires, people jumping in maharaj palki sahib, and now throughing water on maharaj's saroop and granthi singhs?? the sword is seriously needed in these types of situations. bucause without it, they will happen over and over again. its things like this maharaj gave us a kirpan as a kakkar.

wat is the police going to do? the guy who did this, his family will just give the police money and they will let him go with no charges. just likes its been going on for the last 30 years in punjab. some old stuff, just new faces doing it.

but if they were to cut this guys hands off, i highly doubt he would be able to do something like this again.
