pls elaborate on him being the last 'gurdev' ???

him being the last gurdev means, he is the only teacher LEFT who teaches Shastarvidiya, there were many akharas during the 16th-18th century and the akara which niddar is gurdev of is called ''Baba Darbara Singh Runjeet Shastar Vidiya Akhara''which was established in 1661, the teacher linage is as followed :

1.Akali Nihang Baba Darbara Singh (who also learned from Akali Nihang Guru Gobind Singh Ji)

2. Akali Nihang Baba Budh Singh Ji

3. Akali Nihang Baba Sukha Singh Ji

4. Akali Nihang Baba Lakha Singh Ji

5. Akali Nihang Baba Sawan Singh 'Bangroo'

6. Akali Nihang Baba Mangal Singh Ji

7. Akali Nihang Baba Giana Singh aka 'Rabb Ji'

8. Akali Nihang Baba Mohinder Singh Ji aka 'Katapa Singh'

9. Nihang Niddar Singh Ji (present 'Gurdev')

so as you can see from this, niddar singh is the 9th teacher of the akhara and he is the only person who FULLY knows shatsarvidiya.

many people say this nihang baba knows the vidiya etc that may be true as there are some nihangs who do know SOME bits of the vidiya but no one knows the full martial art but there may be a possibility there is a nihang in india who knows the vidiya but hasnt told anyone and has kept it gupt like it is meant to be.

I thought id let everyone know i burnt my pizza because i was writing this and i forgot about my pizza

Wow! Amazing vidiya! Good to see someone bringing something good back from Punjab to us here outside. Wish i could learn the Vidiya, i bet anyone who goes to that class could beat up 4 or 5 guys easily. They would have no problem defending themselves! Really good to see positive things about Sikhs on the news! Keep up the good work!

actually in shastar vidiya you learn to fight jathas, and it is very very very possible for some students fighting multiples as we learn how to fight up to a whole jatha of soldiers at one time and breaking formations!!!. the unarmed stuff is amazing!

and also thanks Mahakaal for the vidiya :)

from my understanding it is because your just not meant to tell people you learn the vidiya, maybe 'gurbar akaal' could give a basic description why it should e kept gupt but from my understanding it is because people can abuse the vidiya for example I learn it and i may tell someone i learn it and they may pick up a few moves and then they may go around using the vidiya on innocent people ( thats just my view, i dont know if any other guys from shastar vidiya agree with this) so maybe someone like ''satpunga singh '' can explain about why it should be kept gupt.

In the armies the strategies and techniques would have been discussed and practised, those who learn the vidiya keep it close and hidden and do not show anyone their techniques, in olden times if spies came and saw how you trained they could create strategies against you. However, with the vidiya now near extinction it has been neccessary to bring it out to the open world and present what is available in a hope to get as many students learning so they can pass it down to the next generations. Only a small handfull will ever get the real complete vidiya, but awareness will be created amongst the masses that this vidiya exists.

Fateh!

Caveman:

I thought it was Bruce Lee who said "become like pani". :-P On a serious note, where in Sarbloh Granth is this vidiya described?

Gurbar Akaal:

Illustrisimo was incredibly skilled, as are many of his students today. You don't get to see the footwork of Kali Illustrissimo in this video because the video camera is fixed in one place and the frame is very small.

I played with one of his students a couple of years back, and it was only after I woke up the next day with an swollen wrist that I realised he's been blocking by attacking my wrist and not the blade. They also have some great blade trapping practices that resemble the "sticky hands" techniques of Wing Chun.

Regards,

K.

There are some fantastic kali schools, however there are some really crap ones. I popped along to one once and the instructors skills were mediocre, he was struggling even when he trying to teach their triangle footwork, when he tried to get me to sign up for a direct debit I left sharpish! I "sparred" with one of the other instructors and he was walking into simple attacks, you can tell when someone is taught in 1-2-3 sequence, when you break away from that you will see their brains freezing and feet becoming concrete. Again it depends on the school and the teacher.

Shastarvidiya is different in the sense we dont aim to trap and manipulate the weapon like Kali guys do, I am a bit dubious about how effective that is because the weapon and hand is always adjusted by a skilled swordsman.

If you read Charitrar 404, when Mahakaal enters the battlefield and is attacked by the Raakash, you will see the refference to him being like water against their strikes.

Gurbar Akaal:

Yep, unfortunately it's the same with Silat as well. Kali has become pretty commercialised and it has lost some of the viciousness that made these "Manilla killas" so feared and respected.

Trapping skill is pretty high level, it takes long practice to make them effective, same as ting jing or "listening skill" in Chinese swordsmanship.

Thanks for the info, I will look up the charitar.

it was ment to be kept gupt within faujis only. an army doesnt share its weapons and knowledge with the world, just as jang vidhiya was to be kept gupt, but ended up becoming too gupt. people out there still know it just dont advertise it. there is a fauji at raqba that learned from Akali Nihang Baba Giana Singh 'Rabb Ji' ... niddar's gurdev's gurdev who supposedly openly teaches jang vidya and not gatka
