The Meaning Of Dreams..

This is a issue which usually has mixed views depending on how one puts the question. If one were to say that they had been having spiritual dream about God in one form or another, many may regard this as a form of 'darshan'.

However, on the other hand, if one were to raise the issue about dream of another nature ie ghosts, demons, burglary, car accidents, etc, many may regard these as just dreams. They many justify these are simple thoughts that are left in the brain whilst asleep.

Hence, the mixed views, I wondered if someone could overlooked the above and perhaps give some information on dreams where one witnesses their family, relatives or themselves in their dreams. What does this mean? What does it mean if one witnesses dreams of weddings, as I had once been told it is a bad sign..? What does it mean if one has dreams about a lost one talking with them, or about death?

Sorry in advance if I have offended anyone.

Thanks.

Dreams are not all the same . different dreams have different origins . hence you need to either disregard either all your dreams or if you are curious you need to differentiate them ,understand their origin and then you can work out which to trust .

During the day, our mind like a camera is taking in pictures and video shots of people ,places and events . this is being stored in our short or long term brain memory . likewise all our thoughts, words and deeds are being recorded in our mind . when we sleep , we kinda lose conscious control of our minds. thats when all these various images mix and match beyond our control and produce little dramas in our minds that we remember the next morning called dreams . the majority of our dreams especially in the early cycles of our sleep belong to this category and are best ignored no matter how convincing as its just brain memory being replayed in all sorts of arrangements of the images still active in it . as our mind slowly gets into deeper states of sleep (like delta/theta) we spend most of the rest of the night in a dreamless state once the clutter has been cleared .

Another origin of dreams is the influence of chemicals that cause the brain to draw on its short and long memory and create dramas i.e dreams( while we are sleeping and the brain is in autopilot state). such chemicals are in drugs like hallicunogens/anti depressents/tranquilisers/ party drugs like hash, acid , ketamin or mdma and even in choleresterol lowering drugs such as statins . again if a person is on such drugs e.g simvastatin for controlling choleresterol or even cocodamol amorphine based painkiller ,you can disregard your dreams and nightmares .

The third origin of dreams are certain emotional or physical requirements in your body that are not been met ,hence triggering a signal to the mind that expresses itself as a dream to encourage you to fulfill that need upon awakening . e.g you may not been eating adequately and sleeping on an empty tummy and your dream will involve you being in a supermarket or being fed by your mom or wife etc . its the brains way of compensating your need during your sleep . it may be a need you are or are not aware of . a load of wet dreams can either mean you have been thinking of sex and not God , or that you need to be getting married very soon according to your biological and other needs . sometimes needs needs you repress can manifest in dreams .

As a general rule you find that more simran you do ,more kirtan you listen or do ,more paath of gurbani, katha etc begins to reduce the clutter of endless thoughts and imaginative, fantasised and captured imagesin your mind . this then starts reducing your dreams .also gurbani and gurmat and sikhi tend to help you to refashion your outlook ,make you fearless ,calm ,confident ,redirects your focus, helps you be patient ,not clamour for things and hence your dreams tend to get less and less because your mind is getting more ordered and more of God's pure light isshining in your mind . less worries ,less attachment and less fear and less quarrels and jeolousies generally calm down your mind and reduce your dreams and produce more pleasant beautiful dreams .

However, as you are more and more into Sikhi , your dreams start becoming based on your new lifestyle so you may dream you are doing kirtan ,matha tekking and crying at Gurujee's feet ,giving akatha ,etc etc etc . This isbecause yourdreams are changing according to your new feed .

On the other hand God is great . He can use your dream state to give you visions ,tell you about the future , or warn you of impending dangers etc . He can even allow you see a live video of what is happening to the soul of someone who has died ,in your dreams

As a Sikh you will slowly learn to differentiate between all these types of dreams and you will begin to work out which are heavenly .

Some kirtaneeas keep a voice recorder near their bed . When they awake right after am dream where they were in heaven listening to kirtan ,they immediately quickly sing that tune and shabad into their recorder and go bak to sleep and wen they do kirtan next they replay that and prepare a shabad to be sung to that tune .

A very good tip is to always do kirtan sohela prayers before sleeping . the more prayers and simran you do before sleeping the better . you get fewer nightmares or none and you increase the chances of heavenly dreams ,messages and warnings and going to heaven in your dreams ,meeting gursikhs past ,present and future in your dreams etc .

Very well said Humkire!

I have a tiny bit of my own theory to add to the dream types, firstly forget about what are a bad sign and a good sign from a dream you had. Superstition strictly prohibited in Sikhism by Guru Nanak, the sooner you accept that the better.

As correctly said by Humkire, dreams are based on events that have been captured prior to sleeping. As you know sleeping has different levels, and in the initial stages of your dream you will face rearrangements of different captured images or even videos.

However the question might pop up to, why do i get dreams about something i really want then, or something that hasn’t happened, this is truly because when you’re in deep sleep, it’s you subconscious mind controlling what you see. The sub conscious mind will produce what you really want, even if some dreams are a necessity in order for you to sleep, example hunger for food.

The sub conscious mind cannot be controlled, because it’s what you truly want from your heart. Rightly said by Humkire, you really should do alot of Simran and kirtan sohila before sleeping. If the jap essence is in your tongue, mind and heart, then your sub conscious mind will only want to think about god. It’s the filtration of what dirt, getting a clear mind.
