Gudwara And Party Hall In Same Building

Kalighdar Gudwara in Leeds is currently in development, and have proposed plans to build a party hall as part of the complex. The Hall will be in the same building as the Darbar Sahib, with only one wall dividing the Darbar Sahib and the space set out for the hall. A letter has been sent from the Shiromani Prabandhak Commitee as a potential veto against these plans, however this letter has been completely disregarded and has been 'ripped up' by members of the commitee.

Surely as gursikhs something must be done against this, as this is really taking the mick. Im aware that other gudwarai in the area have stopped wedding parties occuring, however many of these have the hall in a seperate builing but on the same grounds as the gudwarai and if these have been banned surely something must be done, whilst the gudwara is still in development??

the gudwara is also in the spotlight due to intimidation tactics of the commitee in order to secure funds to continue the development. this has been documented on wikipedia:

Intimidation Tactics Of Gurdwara Kalgidhar Sahib Ji Committee Cabinet ( Leeds )

Recently a law was '''passed''' by the committee of Kalgidhar Gurdwara ( Leeds) which states that members of the Kalgidhar Gurdwara Sangat cannot do Mil-Vartan ( Socialise) with ex - members of the kaligidhar sangat and members that have been excluded from the Kalgidhar sangat. The committee say if members are found doing doing mil-vartan with these people they will be fined. A lot of the kalgidhar sangat disagree as personal mil vartan has nothing to do with gurdwara commitee, but they are being pressured and imtimidated by certain members of the kalgidhar committee to execute this law. A lot of members of the kalgidhar sangat are sick and tired of hearing the lies from the kalgidhar committee about the maintanance of the gurdwara and the janj ghar ( community hall) which is currently being built ( even though members were told by the kalgidhar committee this work would be done by late dec 2008. A lot of members of the kalgidhar sangat feel they cannot have their say in the committee as their views are being overlooked by certain members of the kalgidhar committee who have a vice grip like hold over the rest of the committee. Many members of the kalgidhar sangat feel their chanda ( membership fee of the sangat) is being mis-used and not being spend on the right things. Now quite a few members including senior members have planned to quit the kalgidhar sangat in process but will still worship now and then at the gurdwara which is property of the sangat not the committee. Many believe the kalgidhar committee should stay out of members personal affairs and do not agree with this ridiculous mil-vartan law.

any suggestions for action which could stop this proposed beadbi??

UK politics is straight up corrupt to the max. I know a few people from UK and they are really really in "lah-lah land".

Best thing to do is document the corruption and wen the time comes prove that it is beaadbi and antiSikhi and once enough people get together the committee can go cry somewhere else. They are masands and minas, they need to be thrown out of the Gurdwara by their pants and humiliated due to no humility and while being "incharge' of Gurdwarey management". People are corrupt as a Godless fool but they pretend to be religious and should have a more severe punishment for their corruption and false actions.

Be a GurSikh and collect with others to have a qualilty Sangat and all the people that can know the difference will stop attending the masands jal that they call a Gurdwara. Once the Gurdwara isnt about Sikhi and its fundamentals then it stops being a House of God, it only remains an empty building that they hold Guru Granth Sahib hostage etc.

Be a thorn in the masand committees side.

Agree with the above post ... do you know if they are getting any funds from the Gov or local council.... you could always do an annonamous tip off to the local press.... could work in two ways though (negative publicity for the gurdwara commitee or negitive publicity of sikhs).

im in leeds in the next couple of weeks could you tell me the location of the gurdwara ... wouldnt mind having a chat with the committee ....

What is the youth doing about it ...

think the best one is to warn the committee that if the carry on as they are and carry out parties in the hall then they will be boycotted..... you can expect a joint coach from Luton, Bedford, Hitchin, MK, Letchworth.

Good Old JR, Is this new Gurdwara not already built? I have been past it many times and the Gurdwara looks up and running, although I have never been in, just do mutha-take as I go past.

I never knew that things were this bad, as this community are normally very close knit, did not realise that there were deep divisions.

Did not part of this community split away and make another Gurdwara of thier own in Potternewton Park, which now has a lovely big Nishan sahib outside it? for such a small Sikh community we now have at least 6 Gurdwarey in Leeds.

If there is a party hall that is to be built next door to the Gurdwara i don't think there is much we can do about it as is this not the same community that serve bacon and eggs for breakfast in the langar hall? I could be mistaken though.

the gudwara is built, however the side of the party hall is still in development. from the exterior the gudwara does look up and running, however inside only the Gudwara is functioning, the other half (ie the hall) is still in the process of being built, although the commitee are facing financial difficulties in doing this hence the post on wikipedia. I dont think that this is the same community who have bacon and eggs, however they may start doing so, aswell as meat, and alchohol in the party hall, if and when its completed. Im pretty sure this is why half of the sangat has split up, over this very issue, aswell as rumours of money swindling from members of the commitee.

I just think that something should be done by the sangat to prevent this, as it would be alot harder to close once its up and running and the party season hits. also, only one party being done there is enough beadbi, its better to solve the problem now rather then react to it if and when it occurs.

I know this gurdwara well, they do not serve meat in the langar hall. However I agree that the party hall should not be opened and it seems that Maharaaj is not letting this happen anyway since they are short of funds.

This other issue about mixing with people who are not members of the gurdwara is nothing to do with sikhi and the people whom this is being forced upon should stand up and be lions - sikhs should stand up to intimidation not just let it happen. Thats what I would do anyway.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
