just wondering...cuz wen i was readin it, it said knowledge is a tool and like all tools its impact is in the hands of the user

that in a way relates to sikhi

for example: the knowledge of sikhi if known properly can give us happiness, peace, prosperity etc

I think Id rather use toilet paper than davinci code book pages

I bet the phonebook can be used as a way to "fore tell" things after its happened too. Some weirdos come out with wacko claims that can be debunked by a 2nd grader.

I thought 'the lost symbol' was pretty good.

Dan Brown uses a lot of facts to support his fictional story.

Noetic Science:

For example, Noetic science is a new real field of science that is quite interesting and could lead to a bridge between modern science and the abrahmic faiths. Their work in relation the human conscious is relevant to sikhi as well. Things like the 'Maha Rishi effect' which american scientists are studying is proving the positive effects through scientific means of collective meditation. i.e. Sangat, which guru ji told us to do 500 years ago.

String Theory:

For any of you physicists there is also brief mention of string theory and 10 dimensions. Whenever I read gurbani and came across guru jis reference to the ten directions, i didnt really know what it meant. The Sunder Gutka Sahib i got at home gives a definition at the back as meaning north, east, south, west, north-east, south-east, south-west, north-west, up and down. I wasnt ever satisfied with this answer (might be right but dont know), as how about the directions going up but also north? String theory basically predicts 10 dimensions (not just the three we know about Length, width and height + 1 for time) but is not experimentally proven. I think if it is proven, then guru jis reference to 10 directions makes more sense:

Example of some references (if you type 'ten directions' in to STTM you'll see how many times it is mentioned (alot!)):

1) eihu manooaa khin n ttikai bahu rangee dheh dheh dhis chal chal haatae |

This mind does not hold still, even for an instant. Distracted by all sorts of distractions, it wanders around aimlessly in the ten directions.

2) chaar kuntt dheh dhis bhramiou this bin avar n koe |

I wandered around the four corners of the world and in the ten directions, but I saw nothing except Him.

Alchemy:

Book also mentions alchemy and past scientists quests for the 'philosophers stone'. It highlighted that man doesnt actually know what it is. Some of the brightest minds like Isaac Newton even believed that there was such a thing and he spent a lot of time trying to identify it. The book highlights the 2 views on what the philosophers stone actually does:

1) turns a base metal like lead into gold.

2) turns man into a divine being. i.e. god-like. The term he uses is apotheosis.

The simplest man to the brightest scientist has spent their lives trying to find it. And guruji says:

1) sathigur paaras pareharai pathar paaras toontan jaaeae|

Leaving aside the philosophers stone in the form of the True Guru, people go on searching the material philosopher's stone.

asatt dhaath eik dhaath kar lukadhaa firai n pragattee aaeae|

The True Guru who can transform eight metals into gold in fact keeps himself hidden and does not get noticed.

lai vanavaas oudhaas hoe maaeiaadhaaree bharam bhulaaeae|

Mammon-orientated person searches him in forests and gets disappointed in many illusions.

hathee kaalakh shuthiaa andhar kaalakh lobh lubhaaeae|

The touch of riches blackens one's outside and the mind is also smeared by it.

raaj ddandd this pakarriaa jam pur bhee jam ddandd sehaaeae|

Catching hold of wealth makes one liable to public punishment here and to punishment by the lord of death there in his abode.

manamukh janam akaarathaa dhoojai bhaae kudhaae haraaeae|

Futile is the birth of mind orientated, he getting engrossed in duality plays the wrong dice and loses the game of life.

gur poorai vin bharam n jaaeae |11|

Illusion cannot be removed without the perfect Guru.(11)

2) jio lohaa paaras bhaetteeai mil sangath suvaran hoe jaae |

Just as iron is transmuted into gold by the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, so are people transformed by joining the Sangat, the Holy Congregation.

jan naanak kae prabh thoo dhanee jio bhaavai thivai chalaae |2|

O God, You are the Master of servant Nanak; as it pleases You, You lead him. ||2||

3) gur paaras ham loh mil kanchan hoeiaa raam |

The Guru is the Philosopher's Stone; by His touch, iron is transformed into gold.

The Word:

There is constant repition and seeking of a 'word' in the book, that if spoken will have drastic consequences if in the wrong hands. The word/secret first goes from being something that can destroy us in the book to something that can take us to the heights of spirituality. The holders of the secret do not let it out because the world is not ready for such knowledge. If any of us take a look back at our history its plain to see where the countless shaheeds, scholars, saints, and other leaders of our panth took their strength from . Gurus bani is the greatest support and also the greatest weapon in our lives against an immoral life. When any one tried to damage the sikh community it has alway been aimed at the gurus word, which has been the source of our strength since guru nanak (raag mala, cutting of end of chaupai sahib, changing the meaning of gurbani by guru jis son, narakdharis putting foot on guru granth sahib ji all comes to mind).

The bible states that first there was the word and the word was with god. Guru ji clearly stated that gurbani is timeless, it came from sach-khand, and the word is the guru and guru is the word. Its not consequence that the first granth was entitled 'Ad-granth' meandin primal (before time) granth. My opinion but gurbani is the word that most religions speak so highly of but unfortunately wont ever turn their eyes/ears to.

Im sure there are many other parts of the book which are relevant to sikhi but hopefully the 4 above, which are based on sceintific fact (or theoretical physics at least) and not just a fictional book will encourage us to:

a) do more sangat (noetic science)

b) understand that 'God is perfect science' (string theory)

bidhiaa kott sabhai gun kehai |

Millions of sciences all sing His Praises.

namo giaan bigiaan kee giaan giaathaa | 12| 231|

I Salute you, who is knower of the knowledge of all subjects and sciences.(12)(231)

c) understand the essence of humility and learn how to truly give ourselves to the guru and the guru panth and allow guru ji to turn us from manmukh to gurmukh (alchemy)

d) do simran with each breath and each morsel of food as guru ji intended us to. (the word)

Sorry if i bored you guys. But hopegully answers ur question.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
