Panj Ishnaan

I've heard people say that when they go to Amritsar, rather than have a dip in the sarovar, they will do panj ishnan.

Can someone please explain what panj ishnan is? I've also been told that panj ishnan can be done at amrit vela when you are getting used to doing getting up early, rather than full ishan.

The standard for Panj Ishnaan is washing of the face fully, and two hands and then your two feet so that equals five parts of the body. I don't know if it can be used in the morning for amritvela
