MUMBAI: November 19 was Indira Gandhi's 92nd birth anniversary. To mark the occasion, film-maker Krishna Shah — he made 'Shalimar' with

Dharmendra, Rex Harrison and Zeenat Aman in 1978 — has announced his epic global film, 'Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story'. And Madhuri Dixit-Nene, the diva who dominated Bollywood through the 1990s, will play Mrs Gandhi.

Shah (71), who has been making film and television software in Hollywood, has been researching the subject and wants to make 'Mother' in two parts. He claims to have pieced together a script from published and unpublished material, innumerable interviews with politicians, journalists, bureaucrats, writers, military officials and the late prime minister's contemporaries. Shooting will commence in the spring of 2010.

Other major Bollywood actors in negotiations are Nana Patekar (for Jayaprakash Narayan's role), Dharmendra (Motilal Nehru), and Abhay Deol (Rajiv Gandhi). Even Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones are being approached by a well-known casting agency for playing the roles of politicians from the West.

"In my view, a whole new generation has matured since her assassination and it's the role of art to connect people with their history. My film seeks to create such a connection," Shah said.

The first of the two-part series will cover her story from birth to her emergence as "Ma Durga" after her victory against Pakistan in the 1971 war. Part two will cover the rise of her son, Sanjay Gandhi, his death and her assassination.

Shah said he was inspired to do the film after an anecdote he read. In a conversation between the 14-year-old Indira Gandhi and her ailing mother, Kamla, Indira asked who would look after her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, when she was no more. Kamla answered Indira would have to do that job. Then she asked who would look after him after she was married and had her own children. Her mother, according to the anecdote, answered: "A woman is a mother to one and all."

Obviously, they will demonise Sant Jarnail Singh and get some Bollywood villian to play his role! You can't show a 'positive' portrayl of Indira Gandhi's life without making Sikhs look like the villans.

Key Sikh character roles will probably include Bhai Satwant Singh, Bhai Beant Singh, Bhai Kehar Singh, Bhai Amrik Singh, Bhai Subheg Singh as well as the countless Naujwaan of the Panth who gave shaheediya during the 80's.

There's no doubt the the movie will be based on the anti Sikh media views monopolised by Lala Jagat Naryan during the 70's and early 80's.

As always it's expected to see prominant Arya Samajis like "Sada Dharmendra" and the Deol family playing such key roles of the Congress in this "Epic"!!!

This could potentially be a very damaging film and extremely influential (as films tend to be) in shaping the niave members Sikh/Punjabi communities views on '84, the Dharm Morcha and Sikhi in general...

I am very sorry to say we will not be able to do anything .

We have not been able to do anything for 25 years regarding the anti Sikh genocide all over India. What can we do about this movie even if it inflames passions ?

Most of the Sikh youth in Punjab are obsesessed with Hindi Movies and most of them have already become 'nakaara ' due to "nashay" .Most of them dont even know the Sikh history from 1980's till today .So much so that one such person from Mohali (which was once the center of Sikh activities)directly told me on the net that "mein Sikhaan vich paidaa ho k pashtaa rehaa haan !" .

The so called guardians of the panth according to most Punjabis "badal dal" is already hand in glove with anti Sikh party(BJP) and various deras.Deras are carrying on their anti Sikh activities with impunity courtesy badal dal whereas any Sikh who raises voice against the Dera is arrested in case of Anti national activities and under anti terrorist laws.

At the moment there is no govt in Punjab.Sukhbir and his ministers are busy in the wedding of his "saalaa" Bikramjit Majithia on which the badal parivaar has spent crores of rupees while on the other hand a common Sikh farmer is commiting suicide in Punjab.Prakash Badal is some where in Israel and Middle East wasting away public money.

This movie is another attempt by Baahmanvaadis to hit a blow at the self esteem of Sikhs.

We can not do anything till we have shaheed Singhs like Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda,Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha,Bhai Beant Singh,Bhai Satwant Singh,Bhai Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala and others. All of these Singhs were close associates of Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu who himself is in solitary confinement at Amritsar jail.Even Bhai Hawara is in Burail jail,Chandigarh.

At the moment no Bhai Sukha,Bhai Jinda or anyone like the other shaheed Singhs is in sight in Punjab.

Brar,

Punjab

There's no doubt the Hindi movie & Bhangra pop stars have made the culture of Punjab brain-dead and are making people spiritually devoid.

You only have to visit Punjab to see what our relatives have on the TV all day and night. At least the West have documentaries, talk shows or current affair programmes to watch which if nothing builds articulate debating skils, raising political awareness. Most of modern Punjab's sole form of media is appears to mainly Bollywood or Punjabi Bhangra song videos. A film depicting Indira as a hero and Sikhs as evil will not only demorilise us but will influence many "Sikh" households.

Maybe someone from Punjab can correct me, I am basing the above on my own experiences.

as one prominent hindu jouranlsit put it, if indira gandhis memory was to be revered by people then year after year the govt backed congress party would not have to spend millions after millions every now and then to make indira immortal. However her crimes, sikhs are just a part of her large criminal activities, wont go unpunished. She was a demon who criminalised politics and was responsible for downfall of indian politics, constitution, judiciary, democracy and common mans hope of fair life in a equal land. she was a b1tch who would find no place in indian history of modern india. she would stand along people who did great harm to india as a nation when its gone!!!

Hello,

I am in Punjab and you are absolutely correct in your observations.

At the same time we must be aware that all this is happening under a larger conspiracy to make Sikh youth hate their culture and way of living and think that only bollywood heros are our heros whereas for us the real heroes should the Shahibzaadays.Even non amritdhari Sikhs should not follow the bollywood culture.

Actually there is still a ray of hope as was shown on 3 November,2009 total Punjab bandh to seek justice for 1984 victims. So it seems the youth in Punjab :Amritdhari as well non Amritdhari feel the pain of anti Sikh activities of Baahmanvvadi's and are prepared for a change but they need the correct direction.Any way who tries to motivate the youth even in a peaceful manner is put in jail. The example of Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu is in front of us.

At the same time the need of the hour is complete Sikh unity.Look at the number of Sikh federations, jathas, organisations etc which are countless.New Sikh organisations are propping up every now and then. And each organisation is against the other. The badal dal supported AISSF(Mehta) is busy burning the effigies of Prof Darshan Singh. All these issues should be resolved across the table instead of taking to the street. The complete unity of Sikhs was shown on November 3,2009 but a few days later we have Sikhs burning each other's effigies. Is this some conspiracy ?

Brar,

Punjab
