"..This is a historic disaster," said UN spokesman Elisabeth Byrs, whose own organisation has lost 36 local staff in the earthquake. "We have never been confronted with such a disaster in the UN memory. It is like no other." .."

Khalsa Aid is responding to this terrible disaster by providing as much assistance as possible, we have linked up with a London based Haitian organisation to make sure the relief materials reach the most needy. WE NEED YOUR HELP ! We need regional Relief Coordinators to liaise with Gurdwaras to organise collection of these essential items and fundraise. We will organise the transport of the collected items to London. We have an opportunity to inform the world that we care and the message of Sarbat Da Bhalla is for the whole of humanity.

We need the following urgently to promote hygiene in the effected areas. We need buckets or similar size containers with lids from stores such as B & Q/Tesco/Homebase etc and fill them with new items such as:

baby wipes or wet wipes, soap, (bars only ) washcloths, (facecloths ) toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs and brushes (Do not include shampoos or any materials that could leak in transit. ) flip flops, sleeping bags ( available in Tesco around £7 ?) tape ( all types ) and torches with batteries packed separately..

We also need NEW blankets so the Sangat can decide what they would like to donate.

Khalsa Aid will also purchase specialist items ( water purification tablets etc ) and ship them direct to Haiti.

PLEASE DONATE SO THAT WE CAN DELIVER MUCH NEEDED ITEMS TO RELIEVE THE SUFFERING OF THESE UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE !

No offence guys but you should dedicate 100% of your efforts in Punjab. It was heartening that you had started the projects in Punjab but disasters like Haiti will happen every few years and the world has already donated millions of pounds and the US military with all its resources has been quick off the mark to help out with aid distribution. Khalsa Aid will just be replicating the work of other agencies and organisations. Don't forget the people of Punjab just because another disaster has occurred. The People of Punjab need your undivided attention.

Just my personal opinion... I await the brickbats!

I was thinking of posting the exact same thing as you, but decided against it. However, I do agree with you, the whole world is supporting the aid efforts of the Haiti disaster, who is supporting families of Shaheeds in Punjab?

'Recognize the Human Race as One' - Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji

The translated english meaning is wrong.. In gurmukhi it meant different.. saying that we all human (manas ki jaat) should remember the ONE god.

Though it is tough to say but i agree with proactive...

The posting was not meant as a criticism but just to put forward an alternative view. Khalsa Aid has been around for over a decade and just in the last year or so it has been collecting for projects in Punjab especially with combatting drugs in Punjab as well as countering the Christian missionaries. If Khalsa Aid now diverts its attention to Haiti no matter how much exposure the Sikh religion will receive, it will still mean less focus on Punjab. The losers will be our fellow Sikhs in Punjab. Our community has limited resources and as the Sikh Channel project showed we are worst at donating to Sikh project than to non-Sikh projects. A Guradwara in Canada collected $100,000 in a single day for Haiti but if an appeal was made for Punjab it is doubtful that even a 1% of that would be collected. We Sikhs need to do some introspection into why this is.

I think Khalsa Aid needs to devote its full attention to Punjab, as Punjab has suffered so much in the last few decades and no one has been helping the people of Punjab and those that have done so do so with ulterior motives.

While i appreciate humanitarain efforts of khalsa aid and wish them well, I do have concern about their alignment with Gurmat Gian Missioanry college Ludhiana in Punjab. On one side It is christian missionaries who are converting innocent sikhs of Punjab by tricks.oOn the other side it is sikh missionaries who are even inflicting more damage to sikhism by disowning 300 years of sikh heritage.

Khalsa aid need to be beware while selecting their partners in Punjab to further a cause that should be helpful to sikhism.

If Khalsa Aid has enough volunteers, can it not do both?? I am sure there are many sangath members, gap year students etc. that would like to volunteer for Khalsa Aid. Can it not send some to Haiti and still continue with the brillant work they have started on Punjab. I most certainly would be willing to assist in the Punjab project. Any others willing to assist Khalsa Aid in Punjab?

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa Waheguru ji ki Fateh

Thanks for all your comments,

Khalsa Aid was set up with Punjab in mind.

We have worked for going on to 11 years internationally to establish a Cast Iron reputation within our community, so that when we launch programs in Punjab, the Sikhs in Punjab would be supported as they should be.

Furthermore we are not backed financially by any Organisation/Jatha so that we could direct all operations in Punjab, we rely on individual sangat. Thus, we are in Haiti because

a.) We have a responsibility as a Humanitarian Aid charity

b.) Most importantly those who donate to us have urged us to go and help in Haiti. If someone gives £500 and says "please help those unfortunate people in Haiti" we have a moral duty to do so.

It is important to note that in regards to doing both Haiti and Punjab, we are working in Punjab as we speak, as we have launched a program early last year sponsoring 60 Sikh children in the Goindwal District. This is a long term project and we send money monthly to keep it going. We need everyone's help to continue and expand our projects in Punjab, those who are passionate as we are about Punjab:

Why not commit to a Monthly Direct Debit? (Approx £10 for one child)

Make it Clear you wish this to go towards Punjab only and we will respect these wishes. We are going to Punjab in a month or two and will be expanding the projects, how much we can expand depends on you guys,

Why not make a commitment which would enable us to work more in Punjab?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
