Sonia Deol's Father Jailed For False Translations At Court

Sonia is in the public eye, so her actions, life and work will be discussed in public. Like it or not, this is part and parcel of the career she works in. She stated the programme was her personal journey, even appearing on the Sikh Channel to promote it as such. This was fair enough....but then why was the title 'Sikh Story' attached to it when 'Sonia's Story' would have more than sufficed. If it was a Sikh story as it said on the label, she should have reflected the full spectrum of Sikh opinion and discussed events since 1947 which have led to the manner in which Sikhs have been treated since India gained independence, on 13 April 1978, in 1984 up until the present day. Instead the Sikh opinion was left to an 18 year lad working on a stall, whereas respected lawyer H S Phoolka who has served the Sikh community by fighting the Sikh Holocaust cases tooth and limb for the past 25 years was merely shown planting trees. The time of the programme was not a constraint. What was presented and the manner it was edited was all intentional. Sonia was aware of what was going to be broadcasted as by her own admission on the Sikh channel, she had recieved and viewed the programme prior to it being aired.

ghoman01, tensions run high on this subject because Sikhs were and still are being raped, tortured, butchered and killed in India. I agree there is split opinion but without presenting the full story, the matter is being trivialised. The sinister element to the programme was the involvement of self professed Congress Party supporter Mr. Bajwa. This is akin to a story on the Jewish Holocaust having the involvement of a Nazi party member. Sonia can not have been totally naive as to all this.

One of the many problems with the programme was that people had such high hopes for it. It was clearly a publicity stunt to attach the Sikh title to it to boost ratings on a Sunday night. The programme has encouraged debate, but not about how the Government at the time orchestrated the widescale holocaust of the Sikhs, how rioters were given electoral lists to target Sikhs, their homes and properties and how the orchestrators of the massacres still walk free. The lasting impression of the show was how a mahapursh was presented as a terrorist.

Sonia linked her father to the programme by having him appear in it. She was probably trying to show she came from a wholesome respectable family.....may be even trying to demonstrate her father's 'qualities' for the Court or Probation Services. Being as her father is now convicted of a crime, this is currently not the case. It may be better that initimate details of the case are not discussed until his appeal has been heard although I would be intrigued to know whether he made an affirmation or oath on a Sikh gutka when he lied before the Court.

Nobody is trying to tempt fate. We are discussing the conviction of member of the Punjabi community. You are adamant of his innocence and it is a shame that the information that you are privy to wasn't presented to his defence team to prevent his conviction in the first place. If he is acquitted on appeal, then we can discuss the miscarriage of justice.

the blood of thousands of innocent people killed since 1984 is not just on the hands of the army & police with fingers on the triggers but on those who have helped in the media coverup and false propoganda which has alienated sikhs and denied them justice for over 25 years.

clearly liars, corruption, perjurers, criminals and mass murderers have all got a place in the BBC, Indian Government & Congress Party but not in our dharam.

Sonia is a public figure and chose to bring him into the limelight. Now all of a sudden that he has been convicted as a criminal, everyone is distancing themselves. The Gutka would only mean something to those who haven't already sold their souls to Corrupt people, the BBC or others.

Baldev Sidhu, has been jailed for eight months for perjury; he is the father of BBC Asian Network presenter, Sonia Deol. Recently Deol came under fire for the documentary aired about 1984 A Sikh Story, but now her father is in the headlines due to an exclusive exposé by the News of the World. Baldev Sidhu was briefly seen with his wife and daughter Sonia during the BBC One documentary about the 1984 attacks on Harmandar Sahib, the Sikhs Holiest Shrine. Sidhu , 62, is now locked up, as he was court the interpreter in the Cllr Suresh Kumar case of 'dodgy' planning hearing. Sidhu was sentenced for eight months for perjury, causing the first tail of Kumar's to collapse when he made a false translation of the crook's Punjabi conversations in the News of the Worlds secret tapes.

I'm not sure what grounds he will use to appeal his conviction, but if what ghoman01 is saying is true, we will wait and see.

He could possibly be appealing his sentence however given that he got eight months probably due to his previous good character, it may not be a wise action as he could have been imprisoned for a lot longer.

If a jury has convicted him, I seem to recall (though may be wrong) that he cannot appeal against it unless the crime involved is murder/manslaughter and/or significant new evidence comes to light. I wouldn't foresee any new evidence coming to light. SO could Ghoman advise - is the appeal against the CONVICTION or SENTENCE?

I have not missed anything, just merely providing a link to what has been reported as with the original post. May be it is you who needs your eyes checking as this is clearly a concept that has gone way over your head gho man01 (the idea is you read the story, possibly click on the link, then discuss if you wish too).

Nobody is saying he has been found guilty of anything but perjury. This is a criminal offence even though you have stated this doesn't concern you as people lie everyday. As mentioned earlier, the information that you are privy to doesn't appear to have been made available to his defence team so as it stands he is a convicted criminal. You may not think this is serious, but many upstanding citizens will agree with the Judge and do think it is serious. These are just parts of the case that have been reported (and that too not by us). This is what happens in the media. Kind of like when you have a documentary called 1984 Sikh Story which is also ill researched but still put out for broadcast.

Interesting, but not suprising, you pose questions but never respond to those posed to you. Maybe a clever remark like you do not wish to bring yourself down to our level will follow, or you are respecting privacy or maybe it is the fact that your dear well respected friend has been convicted of lying (quite possibly following an oath on religious scriptures) and this is something you are finding difficult to deal with.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
