Gurdwara In Guyana?

Does anyone know of any Gurduaaray in Guyana? I know a brother in Georgetown who's looking for Sangat.

Looks like the nearest is still another island..243 Eastern Main Road, Tunapuna, Trinidad & Tobago....They hold a monthly diwan and gurpurps...

Singh is a common name in Indian decendents in Guyana, but I don't think they are of Sikh backgrounds. Most of the Indians in Guyana are either muslim or hindu or christian..Looks like our sikh brother may struggle to find sangat in georgetown...perhaps he can contact 3ho in USA and see if they have contacts in Guyana.

Guyana has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, with almost 40 suicides for every 100,000. This just shows how destitute the population is there. We must see to having more engaging sangat staying there so that we can cater to those who are in a plight. We should give incentives for Sikhs to settle there and start Gurdwaras Sahibs. We can work with government there directly to accommodate those in danger of suicide, whereas the ultimate service to the panth and the world. WJKK WJKF

Guyana is poised to become one of the richest nations in the world per capita GDP.  However, there is not a Sikh community.  The few Sikhs who are there come to work then return to India. My father had a very good Sikh friend who did that.  Guyanese are every friendly people so perhaps the next best thing would be for the person looking for a gurdwara to engage with a Hindu mandirchunok ...obviously eh doesn't have to convert but it may give him a sense of community.

South America's second poorest nation is bracing for an oil boom that could catapult it to the top of the continent's rich list - and beyond. But can Guyana avoid the so-called oil curse and ensure that its newfound riches benefit all Guyanese?

"Many people still do not get how big this is," then-US Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloway told a reception in the capital, Georgetown, last November.

"Come 2025, GDP will go up by 300% to 1,000%. This is gigantic. You will be the richest country in the hemisphere and potentially the richest country in the world."

It may sound far-fetched, but with a population of around 750,000, in per capita terms, Guyana's wealth is set to skyrocket. ExxonMobil, the main operator in Guyana, says it has discovered more than 5.5 billion barrels' worth of oil beneath the country's waters in the Atlantic Ocean.

'Oil curse'

The money would certainly be welcome. This former British colony - the only English-speaking country in South America - has high rates of unemployment and poverty.

But history carries a warning for Guyana. The discovery of big oil in other developing nations has exacerbated existing corruption, leading to the new oil wealth being squandered and stolen. It has become known as the oil curse.
